potato4k, 12 hours ago5 years of software updates is a welcomed requirements, alt... moreThe Galaxy A16 seems a bit like it was designed for those requirements (even though it is not required to fulfill them) as its changes, apart from the bigger display and thinner bezels and thinner design, are adding IP54 and increasing OS upgrades from 4 to 6 years. And Galaxy A models get a successor after 1 year, which means 5 years after end of sales which matches this requirement.

Well this comment section is going to be intriguing

Tech companies have bee... moreThere is abundant info about battery life, and all of them are different because there is no standardized way of testing. And the only ballpark efficiency data we have is from Geekerwan. So having a standardized metric for both battery life and efficiency is extremely useful. And even better, it’s visible at a glance instead of having to do extensive research.

Because it’s too much of a coincidence for every number to be 48.

Re-read It once more, please, because EU commission wants 5 year of support after the end-of-sales.
What you mentioned is from the beginning-of-sales.
This is acceptable for expensive devices with strong SoC, but what about the weak ones like Galaxy A16 5G, which already stutters yet has 4 updates planned.
Do we really need even longer updates for such phones? What for? What advantage will that provide us?

yalim, 8 hours agoWell, 5 years of OS support is only given by apple, Samsung... moreAlmost all Chinese phones has over 800 cycles charging. I have Chinese budgeted, midrange and flagship and samsung. All my Chinese phones gets over 800 cycles and still has over 80% health, unlike samsung where after 600 cycles I can already see battery is degraded a lot and already it is 80% health. My old Xiaomi mi10T has over 1500 cycles and it is original 5 year old battery in phone and it is still at 81% health and it can get all day with 4-5h screen on time. Chinese phones have great batteries esp now new phones.

Anonymous, 10 hours agoSorry man, we don't care about that here, the CO2 wast... moreSorry man, we don't care about that here, the CO2 waste is produced by developing countries, in Europe we benefit from it, you can't complain because we are at the top of the world economic chain.

This just shows how clueless you are.
What do you think, the products made in those countries which produce large CO2 waste are meant for which countries or by which companies? Yeah, for developed ones.
What a great win to move the polluting industries to other countries, especially the ones with many tropical forests etc.
                  That's great for environment. /sarcasm

"Software support: Devices must receive operating system upgrades for at least 5 years from the end-of-sale date."
Sorry, but this one is over the top. If It was from the beginning of sales, then ok although that's still questionable considering warranty is only 2 years, but after the end-of-sales?
A manufacturer will release a phone next month, will sell It for 2 years, so until May 2027, then another 5 year software support until 2032? And what do they actually mean by software upgrades? Just security patches or actually Android upgrades?
If It's Android upgrades, then that's nonsensical, no one can guarantee the current chips will support everything until Android 22, which should be the latest and then let's not forget about actual performance, and I want to see how many users will actually keep their smartphone for 7 years.
It looks to me that we should expect price increases or fewer available models to chose from, especially the cheap ones will take the biggest hit.

Well, 5 years of OS support is only given by apple, Samsung(except entry models) and Google. Many others have 3-4. Dust protection is a hard to find in foldables. Only samsung foldables have that. 800 battery charging cycles is provided by chinese brands but, they never sell flagships outside china. That regulation sounds pretty good for sure.

Ra-Iri, 11 hours agoEU consumers winning again. Hopefully manufacturers will al... moreWinning by getting even higher prices than now.

Point 3 tells nothing about battery life. And no one will verify points 4, 5, 6. Another useless UE regulation.

What an absurd, useless regulation. Tech companies have been working on battery efficiency since the dawn of mobile devices and we have perfect info about it thanks to independent testing. EU "helping" again. I wonder how many billions will this legislation cost the taxpayers in the long term.

did they announce it before? i m hearing this for the first time with only 2 months left, can the companies follow this within this short time

                              very cool

but I couldn't help but notice-

Repairability: spare parts must be made available by manufacturers for 7 years after the end-of-sales date

also, Software: 7 years of software support after the end-of-sales date

that means, if a phone is released in 2025, is sold until 2027, then the spare parts and software support have to be provided until 2034! Am I getting this right?

If this is true, we might see manufacturers selling a particular model for a very short time.

Anyhow, I'm skeptical about the repairability and software support ambitions presented here. I think phones with lower repairability and software support will continue to sell in the EU - they just won't get the new energy efficiency label.

seeing 48h battery endurance tells me enough this sticker will be completely useless, they should better use SOT

                                      Google pixel oh no 👀

Man, I am loving this step so much. Definitely in the right direction. Now may be more and more manufacturers will take this shite seriously the world over.

Now if we could just get the EU to pass some laws relating to PWM in OLED displays, that'd be great.
