I still think 9M is an inflated figure. Then again the company has to pull a lot in order to increase their stock value.

    Kev, 23 Sep 2013Pre-order sales are not counted in the weekend sales. Weeke... morethen why don't they say that they actually went beyond 9M if that's true? that would be better marketing strategy but they didn't. so i think the pre-order is already included in the 9M otherwise they would announced the figures the first weekend of the pre-order. but no, they were quiet the weekend of the pre-order that's why stocks tumbled again.

      iphone may bnot lag but notr quick... compare the latest xperia z1,,, u will love it...
      u know what is stupid of iphone.. u need itunes to tune ur phone.. be android just plug in sd card copy pic.. listen song, watch movie...usb 3.0 support on note 3...
      apple is for eating.. android is for fun..
      play ac3, mkv, flv anything under sun.. can u do in iphone.. iphone is a well with clean water but android is a river...it is still stupid of u to compare android with ios... android is large and beyond comparison..stop boosting of lag lag and think of whatandroid has and what ios lacks.....

        NickCwb, 23 Sep 2013First off all, you have to consider that most of the buyers... moreYeah probably. Then they're actually not gaining anything, users or market share if that's what happens.

          AnonD-180858, 23 Sep 2013Hello everyone, first of all I am a apple fan, but I wan... moreApple tend to say they 'sold', not 'shipped' when quoting figures, and have again said so here.
          True? False? Remains to be seen.

          Where it's a little misleading is much of this record comes from previous contracted buyers upgrading and sales in more countries. Each subsequent model has sold over double of the previous, for example:
          i2 = 6m
          i3 = 15m
          i3S = 35m
          i4 = 70m
          i4S = 150m
          i5 = 200m

          so i4 had most of the i2+i3 buyers (21m) ready for recontract. i4s had some of these plus i3S ready plus new countries. i5 had over 100m at end of contracts (i4 + i3s) plus some i4 willing to break and upgrade and i3 finally ready to upgrade, plus availability in more countries at the get go.
          So now i5s Apple has a pool of over 200m reaching or at end of contract, plus the worlds biggest market - China. Many 4S owners didn't rush to upgrade to i5, but by now are hanging out for an upgrade so 5S will sell.

          Add in fanatical brand loyalty and yeah, you would expect Apple to break records each time.

          What they're not saying is i5 hasn't doubled i4S sales numbers and that in fact the upward sales volume trend per model is slowing.

            AnonD-21142, 23 Sep 2013I'd have to disagree!!! Android phones might have bigger C... more... and I've been working for ages for a big Western European mobile operator and very few people in my company have the fruit phone. And no offence, but I dare to think that the people at my company know a bit more about mobile telephony including smartphones than shop personnel :-)

                  As an android fan hearing the word iphone makes me cry inside, but on using the newest iphone 5S in Gold for a little bit and seeing the OS, my first impressions are that it's the first iphone that I like, it's well built and even though it's not changed a lot since the 5, something is just better about it.

                  However, in comparison to the newer androids, it's still a bit pants, i've always loved the apps on ios, but besides that it's still a mediocre phone in comparison, anyone who's spent a bit of time and actually utilized a decent android handset will tell you that, the HTC One for example, or the S4, the Z1, the new note 3 which i've just been using, all superior to the iphone 5S.

                  Shame really cos they've copied so much from android it almost felt familiar to me.

Unlike Samsung n others, Apple always says Sold numbers (i.e. whenever they see $$$ in bank). It's NOT inflated, as you mentioned. They file these info in stock exchanges. T Cook will be in jail if SEC found those numbers are tampered to manipulate stock price. Btw. Apple don't have to mention carrier details.

                      Nicely done Apple! This is great news. I love the 5s in gold.

                          swift from bdm, 23 Sep 2013i have to say - apple as a computer maker are brilliant... ... moreFirstly, I'm not and Apple fan or hater - I try to give cred or crit equally where it's due.

                          Though agree that Apple hasn't brought much new to smartphone market for a while (despite their claims otherwise), they are the first with 64bit processor. Kudos, though useless for at least another 12 months as neither Apps or iOS designed for it.

                          However you missed the point. Users don't need to go to tech school to learn.... partly because the phone is designed to be simple for anyone to use; partly because the OS is mostly optimised to the hardware so in day to day use it works pretty smoothly. So the tech onboard matters little as it all just works (mostly). Throw in a pretty good camera to boot and this covers 3/4's of what most people want/use - a consistently good experience that just works without you having to think about it.

                          Personally it's not my thing or choice. I wish Android ran as consistently and smoothly. It's getting much better each version. Overall my S3, S2 and S1 are a little glitch compared to iPhone and need restarts far more often. Still, the pluses (there are a lot of them) outweigh the minuses for me.

                              First of all, I am not an iPhone fan- though I have a macbook air which makes me a bit of Apple fan of some sorts. I have an Xperia Z Ultra as my favorite gadget/ mini tablet and an S4 as my daily driver. Needless to say, Apple deserves its success, as its blockbuster sales prove that people are drawn to a great product. Kudos and congratulations. Its success will allow great competitive spirit asking smartphone vendors, particularly Android manufacturers. Indeed Apple is doing something right. And Samsung and Sony, my favorite vendors, must up their game. And Samsung, people are driven with premium materials as the 5c clearly indicates it's an early failure. Better design something physically special, and you will capture hearts of more people.

                                  Android phones might have bigger CPU's and more RAM, but the performance is still slower, which has to do with the huge operating system of Android itself, specially when Samsung and Sony add their own apps and locks.
                                  You'd have to root them to use their full capacity.
                                  iPhone's coding on the other hand is sooooo air tight, that even with a smaller CPU and less RAM, it still manages to run faster.
                                  Plus, Apple always uses better screens with faster response-time.
                                  The only down side to iPhone or any Apple product is that their limited. But then again Apple never claimed to be an open source.
                                  I work in a telecom shop in Europe and basically everybody has an iPhone, because they're simply reliable!!!

Second, you are correct that units sold over units delivered are two different scenarios and you might want to read first what information the news is trying to say. Lastly, sales reports are based on several data the company uses. It is illegal to just make up those numbers just for the sake of increasing their stock price.
