AT&T to ditch WinMo over Symbian, iPhone may stay

05 Dec, 2008
It turns out that these days WinMo is not in its best shape. AT&T have just announced their plans to limit the smartphones in their portfolio to only one OS. They`ll have to choose one of the now existing platforms...

No surprise. AT&T has had a poor selection of phones for quite awhile. Now it will be even worse.

I figured that unlocked GSM phones were in my future, this just makes it a sure thing.

TMobile or AT&T and what unlocked phone: My choices now.

Yes your right about htc holding winmo up, theyve done an amazing job while Microsoft sit and relax and just watch their product go down thr drain. Hopefully winmo 6.5 that should be coming out mid 2009 will be as revolutionary like winmo 7 was supposed to be but i have to say the 6.5 title isnt very assuring.
I hope they dont get rid of winmo because i personally like it all it needs is a bit of user-friendliness that should have came out long ago. Its a complete joke though that winmo hasnt been properly updated in 5 years just look at internet explorer in the touch hd what a joke

I was going to get a touch hd but my friend gave me an iphone and looks like ill be keeping it until winmo6.5 and maybe winmo 7

I'm not a big fan of winmo, and personally i've been disappointed with many winmo phone including the newest winmo phones since it does not meet my expectation. but hearing that AT&T ditching it.. its a shocking news i guess..

since all i heard in asia including in GSM arena is people boasting about how winmo will awaken with the growth of HTC bla bla..

but i think the whole market thinks differently..

but if winmo indeed making AT&T getting loss in revenue this is logical step when facing economy crisis in US

Why ??? Why they would want to go on only one OS ? and by the way, i taught that at&t ia an operator like Vodafone, not a mobile manufacturer. I'm confused.

WinMo isn't that bad but need a lot of resources in order to run smoothly ant most of the WinMo phones are kind of expensive . But i'm not sure how open source is Symbian (i am a Symbian fan), but Google Android is more open sourched (and very easy to programing).

And if WinMo goes down, HTC can easely move to Google Android (HTC already developed HTC G1).

nicksti, 05 Dec 2008What you are saying is not true; you are slanting the facts... moreyour right Zune was a bad idea and obviously its apparent it did pretty much nothing for Microsoft however at the very least it was a great attempt by Microsoft, i was impressed with the Zune as it was considered to be of ipod caliber and the fact that they tried to capture some ground in at least one independent Multimedia account (besides gaming) was a good heading and i knew Microsoft could have really pulled it off as they did with their Xbox...coming into a market already crowed and actually bring innovation was what Microsoft was always about they sparked online gameplay and even now the Playstation network is no where near the Xbox Live,

the Zune failed thats ok as it was just an attempt now WinMo, Microsoft have no excuse as to why WinMo is now biting the dust to me it seemed like they either lost track of tread and swayed away from the market or were just lazy in the actual innovation part and only slightly upgraded WinMo and this is why Mobile Max OS caused such heavy damage it almost nuked WinMo at its heart which was Touch Screen and the impact was so hard that it was felt though out the market even the No1 Mobile OS Symbian suffered but the greatest damage was to WinMo and after more than a year later WinMo is still the same, they did't even bother trying to survive yet alone rival the iphone.

I know i'm pressing deeply into WinMo but they deserve it as i'm sure if this keeps up WinMo will be gone in probably a few years...later bro

Time for a WinMo rev, 05 Dec 2008its not surprising seeing WinMo go down the drain, from day... moreWhat you are saying is not true; you are slanting the facts.

The Zune was a bad idea from day one. Apple themselves were looking to branch out into other things and Apple owns the MP3 market. Zune was not going to pass out Sandisk easily.

When it comes to judging market share of an operating system the data collection is quite complicated. What some sources do is sample WWW data by websites that log which OS is being used.

Finally, this article is misleading. We have no idea which OS they will choose. I bet they are also taking a good look at Android.

This is a very interesting news. While WinMo is gaining popularity in the Asian market, the opposite is true in the States.

This move will affect the small niche of AT&T subscribers going for the more sophisticated WinMo OS. WinMO is a mature OS with a lot of third party apps available for consumer and business use. Although Symbian has the largest stake in the terms of OS share in the world, the wealth of third party apps is something that Nokia has to catch up with.

Mass market preference dictates sales and preference. US subscribers go for phones with simpler OS that require less steep learning curve.

In fairness to Nokia, the Symbian OS has been successful enough to land in both tech-demanding and average users. A WinMo phone owner buys the PDA phone with the OS benefit factored into the deciding equation while most Symbian users are not even aware about of the phone's OS taking only it's other specifications into consideration

a few years ago when the mobile world was developing it was ok to have a "undeveloped OS" Symbian UIQ, Symbian S60 and WinMo all started out the same they all had a great base to develop on and WinMo even had the advantage of the Microsoft and Windows name to throw at people, who knew symbian? which one made it though... Symbian S60 not only survived its rivals but it went straight to the top despite the fact that its rivals had touch screen support on their side. Nokia really did an amazing job of developing its OS into what it is now, it opened so many more doors and practically created a whole new group of Application development on a Mobile basis. Micosoft, SE and Moto are to blame for being so far from consumer interest that this is where the iphone comes in, not being a fan myself but i gotta give it to the iphone that is opened people's eyes and pretty much made everyone realise how c*rap that other juck is which can hardly hold itself together, Mircosoft better have one hell of a plan to pull things back on track or else At&t's not gonna be the only one to shut WinMo out... everyone is

its not surprising seeing WinMo go down the drain, from day 1 of using a WinMo device which was back along time ago, it was in the day of the classic Windows Mobile 2003 i knew this was a weak os but it had potential..lots of it but nothin has changed its still a lousy OS at its base only runnin on the name, Microsoft owe HTC more than they can imagine if it hadn't been for HTC's amazing effects of keepin the outdated Windows Mobile alive doing everything they could to revive it each and every day with all those slick black devices with their signature black theme and Touch-Flo 3D.. WinMo would have been long gone, its a completely flowed OS in todays day, Microsoft haven't realized that its the time's of Business meets Play these days and if their basic OS has a compete lack of Multimedia touch not mentioning no showcase at all than it won't matter what Hardware you slap it against it will fail to deliver.

Microsoft have really sunk low in pretty much their own game, its amazing that with all the WinMo phones out there for all those years 2002/3-2008 more than 5 years!) the Mobile Mac OS has out sold WinMo with two almost identical phones in 2 years... amazing man

Microsoft are losing share to Apple in Desktop/Laptops OS, their losing in on the gaming market the 360 is now below Wii and PS3 even through it had a great run and still is great but its going lower, Microsoft had a great idea with the Zune, checked it out when it came and it was great but such lack of interest in their own product ruined it and its almost like they forgot about it, i'm still a huge Microsoft fan but its time they get their work together and completely remake its Mobile OS cause this ones going nowhere.

Symbian is obviously going great with its popularity really high among not only the young generation but also the currently active sector, Nokia deserves all credit here for making one hell of a market and with S60 5th just out things are looks sweet...later homies!

As an ATT customer, I couldn't be happier! Hopefully we'll now get to chose between awesome Nokia mobiles instead of all the sh!tty winmo phones they currently offer, like the Pantech Duo and the Moto Q. YESSSSSSSSSSS!!! And keeping the iPhone (which I'm currently using) is a great idea; it's always good to have a little inner competition.
