AT&T to ditch WinMo over Symbian, iPhone may stay

05 Dec, 2008
It turns out that these days WinMo is not in its best shape. AT&T have just announced their plans to limit the smartphones in their portfolio to only one OS. They`ll have to choose one of the now existing platforms...

Hi i got the point guys iphone is a marketing hip it s rentbe it s a big chunk of the cake in marketing sales and retaining clients with a gsm provider

there are no symbian phones for CDMA technologie

symbian os is simple open sourse os is owned by nokia at 99.9 percent and will be the new os that will replace linux

since nokia hhad there first arm prossesor arm0 109 mhz in 2001 the hardware and software whent and fallowed to be a open sourcce os used for multitask and run pc apps

so windows mobile is good no doupt but nokia has bin running on a smooth platfor that is now becoming a standard

it quots iphone MAY STAY but symbian is taking over it had to be expected imaginee n95 is 3 year old since the concept now the n97 is out but frankly nokia runs on standerds of there own and .sis or .jar or .cab . jad all form of mobile app will runn smooth on the same pase then the google phone g1 android os NO MORE WINDOWS MOBILE IS A BRIDGE TO A BRAKETHRUE in the mobile industry

          Symbian is NOT Nokia.

In Japan, Nokia has around 2% market share, yet Symbian is the dominant OS, how do you explain that.

Arguably the best Symbian phone on the world market right now, feature wise is the Samsung i8510.

I am not surprised by AT&T's decision. In this bad state of economy in US, AT&T likes to save some cash going for cheaper OS's like Symbian for Free like Android rather than paying big bucks to Microsoft for using Windows Mobiles.

If Windwos Mobile is a little cheaper and as good as the competition , then things would have been different.

2014??? Thats kind of a large large deadline, in 2014 things will certainly be very different... That was an odd announce, and somehow excused...

nicksti, 06 Dec 2008I have to give Apple credit where credit is due - The iPhon... morei was really disappointed with Android, it still needs a hell lot of work to become something big theres hardly any Eye Candy or revolutionary feature and now with Mac Mobile OSX and S60 Touch here no manufacturer can afford to have the slightest glitches cause its so cut through these days Uiq is dead which is good as it was nothing compared to S60, WinMo needs a serious rev or its gonna be dead too and Android has alot of potential and it being from google we can expect some great stuff but right now its too underdeveloped and not popular enough however its relatively new so its bound to go though a enhancement phase.

Nokia are looking really strong with S60 5th, they have alot of experience which could pay off big times and with a bunch of instant best sellers such as N73, N95, E71 and possibly 5800 XM and E63 they are in a good position to make up for the lost market share.

                Later Homies

IMO S60 symbian is best choice for them if they want to concentrate on one single OS. Why? Simply because it's the ONLY OS that provides wide lineup of phones that cater to every user segment(from low end to high end, non TS and TS, business and entertaiment, camphones and musicphone, etc). It's also supported by multiple major cellphone vendors is a additional benefit.

I have to give Apple credit where credit is due - The iPhone's OS is really nice. It is how it handles and the simple fact that it is their first stab at it that is extremely impressive.

Google is another company that has the best people and good processes in place so I suspect that Android will be a worthy competitor to MacOS Mobile. And since Google will only have to pander to the Web aspect of the phone we should not see certain limitations in these Android phones like the iPhone has.

Anyway the title says "AT&T to ditch WinMo over Symbian" and the quote was Symbian is a "strong candidate". Talk about spin.

                      hey hey hey

will SONY ERICSSON do this again??
they drop UIQ with this excuse :"Symbian UIQ does not attractive other operator..."

now they drop WINMO n said: "WINDOWMO does not attractive other operator..."

                      will they???

beside that, if is not NOKIA , Symbian S60 won't success like nowadays
if is not NOKIA, SAMSUNG won't have the latest SYMBIAN S60 for their phone

got s60 inside G810 is a good thing, but the hardware so worst
the thing that N82 can use which G810 cannot use, beside that, poor ram n processor G810 using

2014 is still far away...WinMo team can do a lot by then..i guess they just need to make the OS more user appealing (aesthetics wise) and change their image of PC-like geeky interface...htc (i love these guys) has taken a step towards it already with touchflo..keep going..

I agree w/ some of you.

I love Symbian as an OS, but HATE the recent build quality of all Nokia devices. The cheap plasticy materials feel like a toy in your hand and YES, they do break.

Don't play the blame game, or pull the Apple fanboy stuff. iphone deservees alot of credit for revolutionizing the market, while if it wasntt for HTC, WinMo would be seriously lagging. S60 is a good, safe choice ut nokia has to promote their s60 phones more (s40 is SH*t!).

As for this, I blame Nokia for makin s40 (My biggest complaint against nokiat + recent poor quality materials!)... they should stop making that junk and pour all resources intoa new revised super s60 which will be open platformed.
