Nokia report 90 percent less profit in Q1, but sell 5800 like hotdogs

16 April, 2009
Nokia reported their financial status at the end of Q1 this year and it does not sound good. The biggest phone manufacturer at this stage has 90% profit drop, 27% sales drop and the Finns even started to cut...

Anonymous, 19 Apr 2009why do you even compare the n96. the n96 is obsolete now so... moreThe N96 is Nokia's current top of the range, flagship N-series phone, the N97 has not been released yet so it's not that.

If the N96 is obsolete, which phone replaced it?

The 5800, mid-range, the N85 one of the E-series?

See what I mean by faded away.

zugzug, 18 Apr 2009Apple is #1. I've used my iPhone for almost a week now and ... more2.8 million 5800s sold to customers in 3 months. Now dig up how much time it took Apple to sell 2.8 million iPhones (tip: "shipped" means to shops).
Both phones are good, neither is "best". Tried both.

...see this is an example of where Nokia dropped the ball, I remember all the anticipation before the N96 launched, it was going to do this and that, blah, blah, blah...

...then it launched and just faded away, don't forget it's supposed to be Nokia's current multimedia flagship.

Some may say the N97 is Nokia's flagahip but what's the point of having a flagship model that only exists in people's imaginations?

Anonymous, 18 Apr 2009apple sales dropped as well, they are only selling 22 iphon... morefirst, 22 iphones per day is a silly number. are you saying that apple sells only 7000 or so phone per year? i defy you to prove that. second, desktop sales for apple did decline, but that was offset by a similar increase in laptop sales. you can check that at any financial site. or i can post the number for you.

but perhaps i should be clearer about my point. This forum should be for exchange of information and opinion, not misinformation and hatred.

well.....who hasn't affected by the global economic recession. People to companies to governments......everyone!!!! But we should be optimistic, & lets hope for everything to be on track, by end of 2009. [don't expect everything to be on top gear by the mid 2010]

Everyone should be thankful for all the mobile handset makers, specially Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericcson even Apple & etc. Mobile phone was the new disorder of new millenium [like Internet in late 90's & early 2000's], & changed the entire game. Now everything headed for telecommunications & entertainment convergence [it's already out there], & more & more people want a everything in one gadget. Mobile phone is no more just a mobile phone!!!!

True, the entire global economy is in great s***, but companies can't simply wash their hand by always saying it as a mantra!!!! Surely 2010 won't be like this & everything will began move.....even slowly!!! So the main focus should be continuous innovation & keeping, maintaining & growing good momentum.

Sony Ericcson also in deep financial trouble. I believe even Samsung!!! But if we keep the no's aside.....they are ahead!!! When things are getting better in the future......surely it will be more visible. Or Nokia will be just like Motorolla......[7-8 years ago, where was Samsung or SE or LG!!!!]

Why bother keep on making new products too often? They should at least give a consumers a chance to breath b4 we start shopping for a new one. Greedy cooperations lead to disaster in all of us.Too many new products keep on making each day...who gonna have time or money to keep on buying?...what about the used products where are they gonna end up?

Anonymous, 18 Apr 2009Well no one is questioning anyone's freedom here sir. Only ... moreYou the person asking me. (So I point back it is freedom to talk)

"Not even your pixon. Does it have anti-shake? Can it record videos in HD like my Canon can? What's its ISO settings? How many preset photo functions does it have? Does it have digital and optical zoom? Does it have smile and face detection?"

Now I know why you keep arguing here, you never bother about camera phone and you don't know about camera phone.

Pixon have anti-shake, have ISO setting up to 1600, white balance setting(not really need it because it extremely accurate in auto mode), 3 type exposuremeter setting, WDR support, Auto Focus, Macro, Face Detection, Smile Shot, Panorama, 13 preset mode(include potrait, landscape, night, sports, party/indoor, beach/snow, sunset, dawn, fall color, firework, text, candlelighht and also backlight) Video record is not HD, but it do support up to 720x480 30fps.

Those Anti-shake, ISO setting, white balance, auto focus, macro, face detection, smile shot and etc is so common now in phone camera. Check it, try it before asking it. Your question made me know you still leaving in jungle. (You not bother to check it and thought phone camera is really bad)

At the moment, my Pixon night mode is not that perfect because less of Xenon flash, but remember some phone do provide Xenon flash rather than LED. Example Nokia N82, SE C905, LG Renoir and etc.

But i don't need it. Actually my Pixon has antishake, can record video at 720x480 pix 30pfs, can use a wide range of ISO settings, has a dozen of preset photo functions, smile and face detection, even blink detection...Not bad for a phone !! My next phone will definitely be the successor of Pixon.
