NFC on the iPhone 6 only works with Apple Pay

16 September, 2014
However, Apple could decide to open up the NFC capabilities to developers later on.

AnonD-78016, 16 Sep 2014Why, what do you use NFC for? Nfc is very much important for me...I access my sony bravia with one touch mirroring and use Nfc for sharing photos or music with my friends by just tapping (android beam)... And it saves my time in many other ways...

nitin thodupunoori, 16 Sep 2014so tell me who uses nfc for a better purpose?? im a fan of... moreI see. Then it means you are a real cupertino boy :) . As NFC is used widely to transfer the data between 2 NFC compatible devices as well. Remember? If you limit like mr. cupertino did, than how come you will use NFC at its full potential? Now i know that why mr.cupertino doesn't need much ram, battery, and processing power. Its just too dumb phone with extremely limited and complicated regulations.

harlekkin, 16 Sep 2014Why criticise them? What have the others done with NFC that... moreSorry but you are wrong the short answer is ker ching.

THERS IS A NFC chip inside the iPhone6
Apple has disabled ALL functionality (just like it did with Bluetooth. I’m going to digress so stay with me)

          Diane Gress
Bluetooth on an iPhone has been disabled by Apple leaving HFP "HANDS FREE PROFILE"

Outside of the "Orchard" e.g. Sam Sung Theatre, or No Kia cafe these phones like all other brnads have
          Generic Object Exchange Profile GOEP,
Generic Object Exchange Profile GOEP means you can "share" a jpeg /MP3 song MP4 video by Bluetooth from one phone to another Nokia to Samsung and vice versa no argument there when I bluetooth

Only on Apple iPhone you can't, it a bit like completly removing a liver.

Bluetooth allows 2 phones to sync without a computer!

Apple has once again removed ALL functionality of NFC that it ONLY works via its "Apple pay" again no file transfer etc, just the NFC to commnicate withn the NFC terminal

Apple pay is ONLY, ONLY implement as a fund stream,

Apple is being paid 15c per transaction

NFC is ONLY being ADDED to support contactless payment

If there was no 15c per transaction NFC as inside the IP6 would not have made it given Apples hostility

As you can see there is NO file transfer capability, etc Apple again like say removing both lungs

All contactless credit / debit card will work in Mcdonald Starbucks so NOT a NFC problem

So just like Sapphire Coating not a mention!

Please also be on the look out for Gorilla Glass last seen on an Iphone5S

harlekkin, 16 Sep 2014That's a good point you make. I know that the Opal card in ... moreyea - it seems like about 1 secondes of lag - but assuming it's running on the same (what seems standard) nfc card system - the actual time for the card to do the "handshake" with the barrier is between 250-300ms.

TFL (transport for london) has said that it is more than willing to work with 3rd parties, but it's minimum specs have to have the time at 500ms max...

can u imagine how long the barriers would take to open if the handshake was already taking a full second?

The screen isn't even HD, the screen is smaller than the S4 but the phone is the same size, the camera is STILL 8MP with a 1.2MP selfie cam, you still cannot send files to other devices other than apple thanks to AirDrop (Bluetooth is still pointless and only supports audio devices and now Apple added NFC with one purpose, why not just add the capability to transfer files too?), they copied the design of the HTC One M8 and it only has a 1.4GHz dual processor with 1 gig of RAM! It is honestly KAK! Other than the fingerprint scanner, pretty much everything Apple adds to their devices has been on phones for years, for example - video capability. Pathetic!

I know that the Opal card in Sydney has definitely a lag time of more than 1 second, which is outrageous. But I don't get how NFC chips on phones could be slower? Is it because of the security algorithms or what?

Siphiwe, 16 Sep 2014Then why are you saying good idea if its worthless?Because manufacturers create silly ways to connect to equipment that bluetooth has covered already. It's a gimmick. End of story. In the future maybe, it may be useful.

harlekkin, 16 Sep 2014So why haven't Samsung & Co. offered Octopus on their p... moreactually it's because NFC on phones is not fast enough for octopus/oyster/ovcard - nfc public transport cards -

This is because 5the time to do the full NFC touch thing can be no more than 500ms at MAX because otherwise it would cause massive slowdown on the ticket gates.

I think i read somewhere that some kind of super advanced ultra expensive chip with memory intensive dedicated app has managed to get it down to 800ms

This is no where near good enough - most of the NFC setups on phones will be able to complete the ticket gate 'transaction' in times ranging from 1-1.5 seconds.

Doesn't sound like much....but it would cut the thu put of automatic ticket gates down to a trickle, especially at ruish hour.

AnonD-209094, 16 Sep 2014Bad news that it cannot be used with existing payment syste... moreSo why haven't Samsung & Co. offered Octopus on their phones yet? I don't think that's the manufacturers fault but more so HK MTR that's not allowing this to happen. NFC on phones has been around for long enough...

Apple are advancing NFC by not tying it to a particular BANK app. You can just use your cards and off you go. Who says they won't allow transport in the future, but it's not THEM making the decision, it's HK, London, Singapore and the rest that need to allow it.

As a matter of fact, HKMA and SMA are so backward and convoluted in their guidelines, it's a miracle that they allowed any payments services to exist with Octopus at all.

Bad news that it cannot be used with existing payment systems, like trains and subways. I dont like these systems where you have to scan a QR code and then reply to a text message to make a payment, and i dont like to look for that impossible-to-find little NFC card every time i take a train in Hong Kong, but my phone is always readily available and easy to find. NFC is the payment of the future, but Apple could try to make their own little NFC future here, and thats bad. They already did it with Bluetooth, that was no surprise as Jobs was still the supreme commander that time but why they do it today when the eccentric guy is no longer around beats me. This is deffy a con for iPhone 6, possibly even a dealbreaker for many international citizens.

I hope Android can access this standard in the future because the NFC on Android phone right now is useless as no one supports it.

Read up about Apple Pay and judge for yourself. It's seriously competing with major banks as it doesn't need a bank app to function.

I hope that Apple will allow for that to happen eventually, but even in Hong Kong and some other Asian cities there's yet no way to use a phone for public transport.

Japan has offered this for a while, but I believe the take up of it has not been as expected.

AnonD-263306, 16 Sep 2014How much more of an iSheep can you be? NFC has been around ... moreWhy criticise them? What have the others done with NFC that is truly usable? Sharing photos and pairing devices? Only a handful of banks offer wallet services, on a select number of phones... wow, giant breakthrough. With Apple Pay, you just scan your cards and off you go.

Apple make it SIMPLE to use their services, unlike Android that just leave it up to the banks or the end-user to figure it out.

Only thing i was happy about with iphone 6 was NFC. If it was unlocked, Devs would make NFC apps of high quality and maybe most bank apps would use NFC. If that happens than same apps come to devices with NFC for over 2 years.

Developers still follow apple. I dont know exactly why but thats how it is.
