Ah, finally, non-feshionphone developed for people who want a functional/practical/high-tech device working as good as possible, not a piece of jewelry.
Big and user-replaceable batteries, custom memory, i hope we will have all of that

Will be interesting to see how Google is goingto fit all the chips needed into multiple modules. I got a feeling only a few parts can be changed such as LCD, battery, storage, camera and maybe modem & SoC.
Will have lots of issues because the OS have to be different for every combo of hardware like windows and we all know how well that works out in term of stability and battery life.

I just absolutely pray that they enable and come out with hardware keyboard options. Do not tell me that a touch screen is the best input method because after 5 years seeing and using almost every make and model of phone they are NOT!

I see this totally being a niche device, don't think it will take off. I'll admit from a creativity and design stand point it's cool -- but I still don't want one. It's one of those things best left as a concept.
My advice to Google would to make it mildly successful and then sell the division to some Chinese manufacture.

AnonD-29741, 30 Sep 2014Project ARA - comeback of bulky phones! In technical aspect... moreU are thinking to small time. It's easy to replace everything. All Google will be providing is a basic board. U can change the graphic card and processor along with screen is the idea. Desktops are already like this. Also drivers aren't a issue of manufacturers stay open source because Linux kernel has them all built in. Have U ever installed a recent linix (like Ubuntu /Fedora). U don't need to get any drivers on new and old hardware for the computer to run. At most U get them to enhance the graphic cards built in capabilities. That's only because NVidia and ATI insist on being proprietary about there drivers/software.
Think about it. The tech already here. Now it will be smaller is all.

this is a very cool idea and I hope it will do well
with that being said, I'm not sure if the average clueless consumer will venture into unknown territory and this is where it might fail
I do hope it takes off and becomes a "thing" though

NotePro, 30 Sep 2014Display swap is essential otherwise this will remain a half... moreThe article states that parts that can be swapped while the power is on, not the parts that can be swapped in total.
From all information regarding this project the screen is very much swappable, just not while the phone is powered on.

I just hope that one can get a module that supports global LTE. Also I'd like to see an FM radio and lots of battery options.

Death to the iPhone? However cool iPhones are this is cooler. Now android will be fully customizable. Only thing you can change with an iPhone is the phone itself every year while it struggles to keep up with the pace of Android.

The one thing that I really hope will come true is that it will also support Windows Phone OS later on. In that case this will be a must have phone. Especially it's going to be useful for people who regularly smash their screens. You wont need to go to a repair shop to change the screen.
