My comment was solely for those who are not as fortunate as you are. I mean i was trying to help them get the best out of their device even using cheap headphones.

Anonymous, 21 Nov 2010So you are not familiar with any music systems. Loudness o... moreActually i was refering to the loudness option in mobiles. As far as i have experienced, mobile version of loudness gives somewhat different kind of output. As for the distortion, its true. But that would depend on what type of headphone you are using. Higher impedence headphones, like dj headphones, has almost no chance of giving any distortion provided the device gives non distorted audio. Distortion is impossible in this device if one doesn't apply any type of equalisers. Besides, when someone (gsmarena in this case) has to check the distortion level then he has to keep the volume to maximum. Cause distortion is directly proportionate to volume magnitude(after a certain level of volume). Companies like samsung, nokia take utmost care to make products that gives almost no distortion even at the highest levels. Actually, they limit the volume to the level from where they start getting audible distortions. (I didn't mention apple because they use samsung audio chips in their ipods and iphones).
This fact can be proved by using power mp3, which has an option to further increase the volume (to a level of +12db from max). And when you do increase it, you will feel the sound cracking(symptoms of distortion).
Btw, loudness option turned on increases the output of certain audio parameters not when turned off decreases those.(speaking of mobiles)

Sbdevilmind, 21 Nov 2010Hey guys (side and utk). Since you are discussing about aud... moreWith normal equalizer or any of the other pre sets equ sets 'loudness' setting is horrible for me. I don't think you can call it as an improvement in audio quality as all it does is boost up the bass(HUGE) and treble while the mid-range takes a heavy beating. For me the bass gets so powerful that everything else except for some highs gets overwhelmingly overshadowed by it. It's fun listening to 'electronic' or 'trance' genres but it's hardly audiophile material.
Maybe it's works well for the headphones you are using and the equalizer set you are using.

They just can't take my rough handling. I have to credit to my Philips SHH9700 for lasting this long, nearly 1 3/4 years and over thousand hours of music playback. The audio output is still as good as it has ever been.

SidewindeR, 20 Nov 2010Mate.. did you feel any difference after connecting the ear... moreFrom the little reading i had done before, it seems optimum output is usually obtained at volume levels 6 or 7 and distortion or audio quality as a whole decrease when we move away from optimum level. But yes with increasing volume distortion increases way more than when decreasing. It's just my understanding and i haven't done to much research into this, so i could be horribly wrong. I agree with the improvements to the audio quality bit. I have been using the line out option for quite some time(ever since sb mentioned about increase in volume with that option). I feel that apart from the slight increase in bass there is a certain amount of increase in overall audio quality as well like you mentioned. The output from line out feels a lot closer to 5130 audio quality level. I think GSMArena's audio quality test result for 523x shows output obtained with line out. That would explain why the results show near perfect readings for all parameters.

Sbdevilmind, 21 Nov 2010Hey guys (side and utk). Since you are discussing about aud... moreSo you are not familiar with any music systems. Loudness option is common with any good home theatre systems. People generally use this option (turns off)to avoid speaker distortion if they want to play music in full volume . This is because it can decrease bass and treble simultaneously to a bit for enjoying wrinkle free music. It is also true that it can enhance bass and treble in low volumes, if turned on.

Hey guys (side and utk). Since you are discussing about audio output through line out option, i think i too shoud add something to it. The volume level separations in both headphone and line out option is very different. I mean, one cannot get the same increase or decrease in volume while switching levels in these 2 modes. So, even if the volume levels in both modes come to same magnitude in, say, level 6 (line out) and level 8(headphone), increasing to level 7 and 9 respectively won't increase the magnitude equaly. Besides, there is also a vast difference in magnitude of volume in lowest level of both modes (i.e level 1). Level 1 in line out option is equal to level 4 (approx) in headphone option. I also discovered a good feature in this set that people use less often. Its the Loudness option in settings. This option is like mega bass of sony but has more qualities. I mean, unlike mega bass which only increases the bass, loudness on the other hand increases both bass and treble. This gives a feeling that the quality itself has increased. In fact, the increase in treble has nothing to do with the equaliser. I mean, even if one increases the equaliser's high frequency bars (treble bars) to max and then apply 'loudness', one can easily notice the increase in treble further. Guys using high quality earphones can't dare to increase treble to this high extent, so they never notice this fact. I, on the other hand, am using a cheap headphone with very low treble. So i could easily experiment with high treble. Now, i can't listen songs without loudness turned on. The quality seems to increase so much in loudness.

SidewindeR, 20 Nov 2010Mate.. did you feel any difference after connecting the ear... moreI think distortion occures if you have an amp in phone which is pushing the speakers beyond their design limits. With a good pair of headphones there is no problem of distortion at all. It will be negligible if any.

JUSTBOUGHT5233, 20 Nov 2010hey 3 musketiers(sb/side/utk) are you angry with me? where ... moreIts nothing like that mate. Actually i have no knowledge about the headphones you mentioned. Besides, i don't get to use good headphones due to their unavailability in my town. Sidewinder and utk are much more experienced in using many original headphone products. I use only cheap headphones. The one i am using now is of 150Rs. It has overwhelming bass (2 to 3 times more than a ep630) but too low treble. I have to keep the last 4 eqaliser bars to max, just to get to normal treble output.
Btw, i really believe that sony mdred12lp is what you should go for. This one i saw in town almost a year ago(didn't buy cause it wasn't in ear) and its written price was 750Rs or so. Almost same price as creative ep630. Although i too recommend you to start getting used to inear headphones. Just try them once (original earphones are much more comfortable, btw).

utk, 20 Nov 2010That's coz the line out option is designed for high impedan... moreMate.. did you feel any difference after connecting the earphones in line out mode? I've read that the distortion levels increase proportionally to the volume. So that would mean if we can achieve the same output at a lower volume, that should keep down the distortion levels and noise levels as well right mate?

JUSTBOUGHT5233, 20 Nov 2010hey buddy, i want to ask you a question in this regard. i d... moreMate... don't know much about philips shq1000 as I've not listened to it. But have tried the sony mdr e818lp as my friend owns a pair. It's a bit hard rating budget earphones after using my she9800 nonetheless this just my personal opinion and opinions are subjective ofcourse. Well i won't recommend the 818LP because honestly there is nothing special about it. It is an earbud style earphone and that would mean very poor noise isolation. As a result, the bass suffers a lot and don't even bother listening to in in noisy environment. It just fells and sounds like the stock earphones that come bundled with the low and mid range walkmans. There is bass but you'll have to keep pressing the buds against your ears to actually feel any.
Since you don't like using canalphones, what I can recommend instead of e818lp is to puss your budget a bit more and get the Sony MDR-ED12LP. It is also an earbud style earphone but the bass is much much better thanks to the particular shape and construction. I've been using it before I bought my philips and really liked it. It is very comfortable to wear for long periods and the sound leakage is significantly reduced. Or I'd say you get used to canalphones and get a Creative EP630. Even I was hesitant and unwilling to use canalphones at first for the same reason but Utk and others(in 5130 forum back then) persuaded me to try it out just once and I've never looked back since then. Hope this helps and btw Utk is an expert at budget earphones. I think he'll be able to guide you better..

Anonymous, 20 Nov 2010friend,most of the music players gives low volume levels in... moreMate it's just my speculation and what I felt. As I pointe out in my post, I used level 6 in line out option (I use level 8 normally for earphones mode). Well the output in both the case is almost identical but the difference in audio quality is what i was getting to and not the quantity or volume. You see a source which is capable of driving high impedance headphones can very well drive a low impedance earphone without deteriorating audio quality. The frequency response, noise levels and stereo cross talk should not deviate much even when earphones are connected. You yourself can check it out with a decent pair of earphones provided you achieve the same volume levels during the comparison in both cases. Well it's just my opinion. I may be wrong or it's just me...
Anyway glad you found it interesting.

Anonymous, 20 Nov 2010friend,most of the music players gives low volume levels in... moreI don't agree with you. You should check out other nokia XM series, ipod, sony walkman series or any other reputed mp3 player brands. They all provide very good output volume. Remember the output of this set is low(headphone o/p) even when using very low impedance IEMs.
