The custom fw i'm using right now i.e., V22 is actually a modded version of the latest V21 firmware. So all the improvements and addons are still available. the only difference is that we just replace three small files from the eight original files with the modded files and then reflash them onto the phone.
You can do the upgrade from any fw version. it need not necessarily be V21. You will also have a copy of the original fw files so you can revert to the original anytime and is a very easy and less tedious process. just make sure you follow each step very clearly...

If ou are using the old firmware version i.e., V12.1.089 it might be possible. But the new versions have restrictions. So you need to have modded or custom firmware version inorder to bypass all the restrictions and do whatever you want. I'm using custom firmware and I can send all kinds of apps over the bluetooth which i could not do so previously with the stock firmware.

ain, 21 Jul 2010yes u r,w995,w595and some other walkman phones has clear ba... moreI've used so many se phone. Yes its true they have very good sound engine for greate sound quality. But Nokia made greate sound engin to this set, but provided headset's just basic level headsed wh102. Try nokia headset wh-205, wh-701. At the beginning i'm thinking like u but after bought wh-701 everything changed. Mindblowling sound quality, noice cancellation, superb bass quality, very loude sound but very sharpe n clear (better than se). So try it or any other branded headset with slide ear in option that may provide good sound quality. Afterwards now i love nokia in all the way.

The difference is that 5310 is not tuned as perfectly as the latest lineup of phones by nokia. But with 5233, it is not the case. It has got one of the best frequency response readings even beating the mighty 5800. Yes I agree that it can sound a bit dull with a flat EQ unlike other walkmans. But that is exactly the point. An unequalized untouched mp3 audio sounds dull and lacks depth. With walkman, everything sounds good right out of the box. But with the proper eq settings, the audio can be manipulated to our liking. The music player has 8 band equalizer as opposed to 5 or 6 which is common in most phones.
In addition, the audio quality can be further improved by the use of 3rd party mp3 players like Power mp3.

SidewindeR, 20 Jul 2010Hi mate... audio quality is always a debated and subjective... moreyes u r,w995,w595and some other walkman phones has clear bass audio experience,which really rocks and these are really capable of giving hd sound,and with some specific sound drivers its unbeatable.but there is no dedicated audio chip,they are totally sw processed.the point is nokia doesnt use the perfect combination of sound driver and audio chip ,only sound chip doesnt make any difference and give same sound as sw processed phones.i had a nokia 5310 which has a audio chip,but sound is not effective(but clear sound)and my w200i is better than 5310.it depends on u what u want.i am bass lover ,so i like walkman.

Good phone....good batt life...too bad it does not have 3G unlike the 5230.
The video qulity is very good.
aah ! it comes with a 'stylus' at the back unlike the 5230.

Second day using my custom firmware V22.0.000.. Still the fastest 5233 on the block...
Has anyone tried it yet?..
free RAM available increased to almost 65mb and free space on C: is almost 75mb....
No known bugs yet... Works flawlessly with OVI suite and all features are available except firmware update...
