there is only one ringtone Electronic.aac in the nokia 5310 xpress music which is the loudest out of nething the phone can produce
which is still ok hence i feel if we all owners of nokia 5310 do something like owners of htc tytn 2 did www.htcclassaction.org , these nokia cheaters who have actually cheated us as this phone isnt giving us anything they have given
if they work on the faulty software version 3.63 & fix all the issues, restarting automatically, phone hanging all the time, the screen not so bright, volume button freezes all da time, worst loudspeaker ever than those cheapest phones
i mean nokia also provides worst quality chargers & batteries which is worst, we should all complain like i mentioned above

hmm, lots of praise for the music player but
quite a few complaints about the aspect of the phone itself.
for ex: cannot hear ringing?
lots of missed calls due to above.
why is that?!
can the caller hear you? can you hear them?
how is the clarity of call?
any static or hang-ups?
what is battery like while talking?
anyone have an opinion about that?!

What are the changes in the new software 3.63 as compared to the older one 3.60 except maybe it will solve the hanging problem? I mean are there any more visible changes seen after the update?

Hi everyone!
Please read my review of this phone and do not hesitate any more :-)
I bought my Nokia 5310 a week ago and have only positive experience with it. It's operating system (S40 v5) is awesome and highly configurable, screen is bright and large. Buttons are very comfortable and rather tight to press (I do not even lock the keyboard when the phone is in my pocket, the keys seldom get pressed spontaneously).
Music player and radio work in the background while you do other things like messaging or playing games. Playback can be controlled at any time with the convenient dedicated music buttons. The volume of the headphones is very high, like on a conventional mp3 player (I use medium-size Sony headphones). Loudspeaker is not so loud, but taking into account dimensions of the phone, it is awesome. Music quality is awesome. I have set call volume to maximum and have no problem hearing it on the street. There is a 2GB MiniSD card bundled, which gives enough memory for music, videos and apps. It can be hot-swapped without powering off the phone.
Battery life is very adequate as for me. As the music is playing in my headphones ALL DAY, the battery gets drowned till the evening, but it survives the whole day without any problems.
Camera is OK. Not great, it lags a lot, but I did not buy this phone to take photos with it. It's for music, not for photos, really.
The media player is very good, it automatically adds new music to it's music collection, as soon as it appears on the memory card. It also plays videos without any problems, I am constantly reencoding movies and then watching them on the phone when I have free time at work.
Here are the encoder settings to produce a video file, that is playable on your Nokia 5310:
*Video encoder: DIVX/XVID, 176x144, 300kbps, 15fps.
*Audio encoder: AAC, stereo, 128kbps, 48kHz.
If your video can't be resized to 176x144, let it do what it can and then add black borders at sides. Don't forget to resample frame rate to 15 fps, or it will not run or run very slow.
A good Linux program to do that is Avidemux. I'm not a Windows user, but there was a good program called VirtualDub, you can try that also.
Now to the software. As you might know, S40 phones only support Java apps. So I spent some time searching and got some nice games to waste time playing. But the best piece of software that I've found was the ReadManiac program for reading books in txt format. It has access to the phone's filesystem (you should grab the version with JSR75 support) so you simply point it to files and it lays them out conveniently on the screen, rendered with your chosen font size. GREAT.
So now I can listen to music, watch movies, read books, play games, and text message my girlfriend telling her how much I love her, all on one little device called NOKIA 5310. I LOVE THIS PHONE.
The only two disadvantages, that bother me about Nokia 5310 are:
1) Plastic USB cap. May eventually get broken, so I'm going to get myself a card reader in order to leave that cap in peace. (I usually plug the phone into my PC 3 - 5 times a day).
2) Fingerprints are easily left all over the screen and the keyboard, which is why the phone is constantly a little dirty. I got myself a nice leather case so that I do not carry it in my hand all the time.
My phone is made in Hungary, has firmware 03.63. You must verify the firmware version before you buy, by powering the phone on and entering *#0000# on the keyboard. If the version is 03.60, you'll have to reflash it manually (http://www.nokia.ru/A4405828) or the phone will behave erroneously. You can also enter *#92702689# (*#war0anty#) to look up the date it was made. Mine is 012008.
I suspect, that the majority of negative reviews on this phone are caused by the old firmware 03.60, which is reported very buggy. Reflash and be done with it.
My marks are -
Usability: 5/5
Camera: 3/5
Music: 5/5
Video: 5/5
Java: 5/5
Final mark: 4.8/5
I highly recommend this phone. It is AWESOME.
P.S. No, I do not work for Nokia :-) I just wanted to do a fair review.
P.P.S. The phone cost me $270 USD here in Ukraine.
You can reach me at slava18 (at the domain name of gmail.com) for additional info. I'll be glad to help.
Best regards,
V'yacheslav, Ukraine.

This is NOT one of the best phones .. This IS the BEST PHONE!!!! Beats the living crap outta the Sony Ericsson Walkman series. When you use other 3.5mm ear phones not the ones included in the sales package the sound is AMAZING & LOUD!!!!! My search for the ultimate phone stopped.
The camera is alright but then the phone is a music phone, Xpress Music.
Superb phone. Keep it up Nokia!!!

I purchased it yesterday, It is an amazing phone both in features and looks. It is so slim that you dont feel a phone in your pocket.Sound is very good even without headphone. Adjust the equalizer to loud the ring tones. Camera is OK.It is many step ahead of W880i.
