I suppose you only feel awful about the size of the Sony Erricsson Satio, not about the Operating System... Because Nokia 5530 Xpress Music has the same Operating System...
However if you only consider size is the problem, then you'll feel Nokia 5530 much better compared to Satio... Though the camera and the other features are not so great as Satio, Nokia 5530 worth its price... (It only has 3.2 MP camera, it doesn't have GPS or 3G while SE Satio has 12 MP camera and all other features... You've to understand that fact too...)
However Nokia 5530 is the thinnest and smallest touch screen mobile of Nokia so that if you want a Nokia touch screen mobile, then 5530 will be the best suit to you... (Either 5800 or 5230 are bigger, thicker than 5530 and probably you won't like them...)

Actually there is a way... You can change the home screen theme to 'Contacts bar' type but when you do so, the contacts bar on the top of the screen also appears... If that's not a problem to you, then do as follows.
Go to Menu - Settings - Personal - Home Screen - Home Screen Theme And here select 'Contacts bar'

Frankly I don't have any idea whether it's a virus or just a software bug... But I tend to think the latter... Because so far, I've never met any virus even though I've got Kaspersky Mobile anti virus installed in my 5530..
May be the cause is due to some recent software installation which has ultimately damaged some of your system files... (at least that's what I can suggest...) Then there's only one trial though... Remove your memory card for a moment and restart the mobile without the memory card... If the mobile performs without any problem without the memory card, then the problem should be related with a installation in memory card... (You will have to format the memory card, but remember the software you've installed in memory card, you'll loose them too..)
Did you say that you already tried 'Soft reset' of your phone..? May be that could help you... If that also doesn't work, then I suggest you to go for a hard reset.. But don't forget to back up all your contacts, SMS and any other private data...
