Oh yeah, another thing to add in-
the active flip was a bit slow on response which it took almost few sec before connected to dialer. means that u will be looking at the screen and listening a while to the ringtone after you flip it. Seems to look a bit stupid in front of people as they might wondering;'hey, how come this guy just waiting to answer a call..n not immediate?" .But it's fast enough when you shut the flip. It auto disconnect it. I bet most of the owner have the same dilemma. :)

    i'm one of the owner of nokia6170. As a matter of fact, i'm using it now to connect myself to internet via IrDA. Ok,to clarify some of the stuffs, let me just put the PROs & CONs of nokia6170;

    PRO:
    - Solid looks
    - Stainless steel
    - Very very nice, smooth & comfortable keypad to press on.
    - No heavy. As a matter of fact, lighter than most of nokias handphone

    CON:
    - Well, as usual; limited memory (less than 2.3 mb)for gallery. Means that if u took plenty of shots and videos..hehe, Oops* MEMORY FULL anytime easily!
    - On Application folder, limited memory of 720kb (Separated from gallery folder memory)
    - Sometimes it hangs or worst, auto reset for no apparent reason.(ratio 1:90 days). Furthermore, during this moment, even logo eraser won't work on screen after that.will came out a '?' on the screen.
    - And NO MP3 for sure. only poly, aac, amr..hehehe!
    - NO radio player or mp3 player
    - The back cap sometimes felt quite loose although looks very tight and sturdy
    - no bluetooth

But overall, i still love this phone. will keep it for a long time but now really aiming for N92!Well, 2 phone are better than 1!

        P.S.
        When you're buying this phone:
make sure not only to call 611 (customer care) to hear the earpiece quality.

Make sure you talk into the phone with someone live, and you will hear a bass of your voice when talking.

6170 Would be perfect if not for microphone quality!

          CONS:
Microphone quality is horrible (when I speak into microphone I hear very bassy echo type of my voice in the ear piece!, which is totally mind irritating!) On the other hand earpiece sound is good and people can hear me very well too.

It's a shame that it is almost impossible to find a phone without a minor flaw anymore
(phones are overloaded with useless crap... but don't perform as phones)

I just got my 6170 yesterday from http://www.nokiausa.com (for a total of $273, including express shipping)
              Simply brilliant phone from Nokia!
6170 adds the collection of the most durable Nokia phones:
              3310, 6310i, 7270, and 6260.

If you kids look very carefully you will notice that all of the above stated phones are pretty heavy (according to you, not to me). These normal sized phones serve very well as phones first and are not heavy for mature-minded people.

              6170
              PROS:
              -Nice solid, mature look
              -Stainless steel design
-Loud and smooth volume (thanks to a normal width, no need for a B.S. head set LOL)
-Choice between MP3, Monophonic or Polyphonic ring tones
-Photo call on a large display
              -Decent batterry life

6170 Works perfectly as a phone.
              What else do I need?
              GREAT JOB NOKIA!

The phone is a nice phone ...only fault i have with it really is no BLUETOOTH and the lack of memory..i mean in todays world..bluetooth is very important for file transfer from different manufacturer phone types. I have a problem with mine at present..the phone would freeze for no apparent reason ..where the display would freeze on the main ..and the outer would be cut into half.. i usually have to turn the phone off and turn it back on to solve it.. not sure if this happening with other peeps own. also this occurs when i open and shut the flip too much from playing with it :)

It says on this website that the nokia 6170 has mp3 ringtones, but on the nokia website it says it only has polyphonic...can someone confirm which it actually has please? Also wondering if it has radio because the nokia website says it does but nobody else seems to say anything about that feature. THanks!!!

the phone has really good features like video and mp3 player and even video streaming but 2.2 mb of memory,it just isnt enough to store all these features,(is there anyway to upgrade the memory or a memory card slot )
But wat do you expect if you only pay £99.99 i also think the outer screen is really good i dea as you normall only see black and white outa screens

I'm tired of people complaingin about:
color screen, games, memory status!!!! and other useless crap! 15 Ytars old kids ( yes you act like them), you have nothing better to do than seat on internet all days and complain about B.S.!

This phone is one of the most durable NOKIA phones along the line with
5140, 6310i and 3310 (best Nokia phones ever)

                                      THIS PHON PROS:
                                      -Excellent sound quality
                                      -Unique beautiful desighn
-Nice keypad layout ( not like mos of the todays' toy phones)
                                      -Good reception

WHAT ELSE DO WE NEED FROM A PHONE????????
No need for 16 m color screen here.
16m color screen is only needed for the phones that will include professional 3mp and higher digital camera ( there is none of those today!). It will take 2 years at least for NOKIA to have one! (with otical zoom, real carl zeiss or leica, and real CCD sensor)

I bought this phone back in Jan 2005 and posted a pretty detailed review about it. I thought it might help to give an update for all the newcomers to the 6170 world. I continued to have a good experience with this phone up until May 2005 when I dropped this phone in a glass of water - twice. It recovered decently after the water dried out, but the headset-jack stopped working, batterylife that was only a few hours, and the speaker for your ear vibrated. I decided to send in this phone for repair.

I was hoping Nokia wouldn't notice there was water in it, and one of the things that worked to my advantage was that initially, they couldn't find in the phone I sent in for repair. But then, a month and a half later, they found it and determined the water damage. However, because of the run around they caused, they were willing to charge me the replacement fee at 1/2 price which meant I get a replacement Nokia 6170 for $52. This was great considering I paid $370 for the phone earlier. Even better was that they mailed me a brand new nokia headset and battery.

the downside was that I had to wait a few weeks for it to arrive in the mail since they were backordered on the 6170 (I should be receiving it this weekend). The plus side was that (at least as of thursday), it's supposed to be a fully packaged Nokia 6170 which means that it could even be new and not a refurb (which is what I was told to expect). Even better news is that since I'm getting a complete package, I now have another headset and battery. I dont need the extra battery (how the hell do you even charge an extra battery), and have already received that one headset in the mail - so now what I'm going to do is sell my old box (China box since phone was from overseas), manual, software, powerplug along w/ the new headset and battery to see what I can get for it. When I'm ready to part with this phone after a long while (and hopefully get the 8801), I'll still have a fresh set of all accessories to sell this phone with so it's complete.

Unlike Mary Ann, I had a pretty positive experience with Nokia's service team. I would recommend that she send her nokia 6170 down to their repair center and work with them. I'd like to think that's easier. I'm not sure what exactly she did, but if you're determined, you can usually get a lot to go in your favor.

While my phone was away, I've been using a Blackberry and man do I hate that phone. I find it so much easier to text message on the Nokia 6170 than this phone.

I noticed people talking about the phone's EDGE capability. I was wondering what people in the US were doing to get this phone onto the internet because I was unable to do it. I want to take advantage of EDGE now that Tmobile's rolled it out.

That's all for now. Jaypee, if you're reading this, how about an update on your phone.
