To answer my own question below:
Having spoken to Club Nokia it seems that the back light cannot be changed in any way, either to change the timing or to keep it on when connected to a hands-free kit.
How can Nokia and Vodafone sell an inherently unsafe mobile phone.
I strongly recommend that anyone considering buying this phone to think again.

Great phone but I can't get the back light to stay on when connected to the hands-free kit.

The backlight going out after 5 secs is extremely annoying. Has anyone had any luck it getting it to stay on longer? Also even though set to large font size, still very small. Any ideas to make larger

this phone is ok, but the backlight is a nitemare just going out after 5 secs! also dont know if it is the hand set and i have faulty on and sending it back, but i cannot hear people very well at all! does anyone else have this problem

I think its a great phone.it has all the features,specially stereo speakers.the key pad is much nicer than the 6233.

I can see u all have many problems with nokia 6234 but this are not the phones problems.U just NEED to read the manual and u will see that there are no problems with this phone.

No, it doesn't reads MS Office or Adobe files, it's not a smart-phone, justa usual one with many functions.
