Got to be quick as I'm leaving work:
Kheng, look on Google or Download.com. There will be a utility to do what you ask no doubt. I have Smart Movie 2.72, so I guess 2.12 will work.

Barra - agree on everything except the audio quality. I find it at least as good as any phone I have used. If you find it very very bad, then you may have a fault. Try it on handsfree to see if that sounds better. If it doesnt, then maybe you have a prob.

Abhi: I think you need to format your phone almost certainly. This does not affect the performance of the phone (in fact it will probably improve it). I think re-installing the OS is more than is required and a new phone should be got before that is done.I assume you have carried out a five minute plus power down. If you have, then backup your data and format it.

Andreas, there should have been 2 stylus in the box. I think nokia have only made one phone which needs a stylus (I could be wrong though), so I think your phone company are very confused. Sounds like you got a second hand or returned phone. Leather case isnt great (the bottom rides up on mine), but it will do until I get another. Shame it has no belt loop.

I had the same ringtone problem. I then installed Switcher and discovered that lots of applications were not closing down. What was happening was music player would mute or exit badly, but remain running and that would prevent the phone ringing. It was a real pain in the *ss. Get switcher and use it every other day and you "should" be fine. I know I have been. Also close down "telephone" with it as this shows up as okay quite often when it is actually corrupt.

          Got to go.

          WK

PROS: Best screen (resolution) I have ever seen on a phone

                CONS:
                - Audio quality (during a phone coversation) is very, very bad. It allmost looks like this phone isn't built to call?!
                - CPU is rather slow
                - Phone is too thick (and too heavy), it doesn't fit in a pocket very well

                  hi Wik!
my web application which connects me to internet is not working for few days. whenever i try to open it i come back to the menu and it does not open at all. I have asked the dealer to correct it. But he says that the OS is corrupted and re-installing it would cure the problem. Otherwise all other applications are working fine except the Web. And later i discovered the same problem with personalising the Profile. Now i can not set ringtones or do any changes. but still all other applications are fine. However on opening it it does not display any error message. I have tried everything from Anti Virus of F-secure to Removing the battery for atleat 10 min. nothing works. I want to ask Wik :
Q.1 Whether re-installing the OS or reformatting it the only option?
Q.2. Does re formatting the phone several times has any effect on its performance ? i mean speed and everything else?

Hi everyone. I have recently bought the 7710 and am pleased with it except for:
                    1. There were NO styluses in the box (I had to buy an aftermarket (genuine Nokia) stylus as my retailer kept trying to give me a genuine Nokia one but not the 7710 stylus. Strangely, on Nokia's website they say that styluses are not available seperately.
                    2. I threw away the leather case...it is rubbish. Again I purchased an aftermarket case which also protects the screen.
                    3. And my biggest problem - it decides somehow not to play the ringtone when a call is incoming so I miss loads of calls (and no, I haven't set the silent profile, that remains unchanged as "General"). The only way I have got round the problem is to remove the battery for a short while and lo, when I put it back in calls start rining again. Anyone else had this proble? Is it a firmware problem?

Paul, there are two ways. Either use a memory card reader or use the USB connector and PC Suite to move them across. I use both. Videos need to be in Realplayer format or in Smart Movie format if you have that.

Amit, get Switcher. The problems are almost certainly due to your phone memory being full of junk and then dying. I had the same problem until I discovered this. That said, if you have an old version of the firmware, then that can cause problems. 3.26 and above are quite stable.

PS, my boss is in today, so limited responses.

Firstly, one of the main reasons that the 7710 is comparitivley slow is that it has such a large screen with a lot of pixels. This means that the cpu (150mhz) has a lot of work to do whenever the screen is updated. They could have improved this by using a higher frequency cpu, but then that would have increased the cost of the thing and moved it into 9500 territory / price and its not that sort of phone. So the primary reason the 7710 is slow(er) is the large screen and not exactly sparkling cpu. Also the memory management (garbage collection) is poor, so unless you use Switcher, it starts to lose all its free memory and gets slower and slower.

The 910i uses UIQ and has a smaller screen to update. I dont recall the CPU on it, but it must be a comparitivley higher spec. That said, the 7710 is not that slow really. Its faster than my 6600 by a long way and that had a tiny screen and was doing next to nothing. Oh and I feel the applications work as well as the games and as both are written in Symbian, (the very odd java game aside)this is to be expected. Oh and Symbian is a cut down version of C++ designed to work better in a reduced memory space.

As for S90, it is no different from S80 (which has the same core functionality as the S60), aside from the user interface. Aside from that, the two are the same and it is not the UI part that is causing the performance. All Symbian OS's have the same core, but they add extra api's to that core and overlay a different UI. So, no, the S90 is not the cause of the sluggishness. S90 (the UI portion) proved very difficult for Nokia to get right (its was their first touchscreen iirc and the screen itself was also a challenge) and the 7700 never saw the light of day. The 7710 is really a "concept phone" and Nokia are learning a lot from its development and our use of it and I'm sure wil incorporate the best bits in their future phones.

That said, there is also a rumour going round that Nokia are starting to favour Linux as an OS as this would prove cheaper for them in the long run (no licencing costs). But yes, the S90 series is dead, but we will see future phones using a lot of what was in it no doubt.

                                  Hi WK
Thanx for the answer. But i do not get why a Company such as Nokia need to come out with Symbian 90 (which I think is the sole reason of its slugishness and slow performance) as the games works fine once loaded but not other applications. But P910i of SonyEr works rock solid. Is it because of its processor or the Integrated OS which i think is UIQ or S 60 different version. Besides, Nokia has Officially stated to discontinue S90 platform.

No it is not possible to upgrade the OS from S90 to S100 (or whatever they call it) almost certainly.

This is because the core of the new OS is supposed to be based on S60 with the graphics i/f utilising elements of the S90. Most of the Symbian OS's have a similar core, (with varying degrees of extension on them) and then all have a different i/f layer. The reason we can use some S80 software is that the core OS on both is almost identical and the only difference is the I/F.

So anyway, short answer is no you cant. Best you can hope for are new firmware updates. Besides, by the time a new improved OS comes out the 7710 will be old hat anyway and no one will be using it! :)

hi Can anyone tell me will it be possible to upgrade 7710's symbian 90 to the next better version which does not hang so often(if Symbian and Nokia decides to upgrade it)?

The screen is quite sturdy, however, you can keep it in its pouch (I have started doing this recently) or you can buy stick on covers for the screen (eg http://www.boxwave.com/found/screen-cover/screen-cover.htm). I've never bought the stick on things though.

I clean mine using the provided cloth and my breath. I would not recommend anything stronger unless nokia recommend it (which they dont). Also make sure you use the stylus or your fingers only.

PS Just got my replacement phone from Vodafone and it has firmware 4.01! Great! Oh and they only wanted the phone back, so I get to keep everything else! Bargain!
