K, 02 Jun 2008Pepsi just outta curiosity what phone do ya have? I mean wh... moreBTW, in Australia where I live... The Arte is $1799 outright and on a contract paying $149 (Where most phones on this plan would be free) It is still $979 extra on top of the $149 you spend a month for the credit.
I don't see the point in spending that much on a phone with no features.

Pepsi just outta curiosity what phone do ya have? I mean whatever phone you have I aint gonna say anything bad about it, people have the right to own any phone they want, its all about personal choice. I ask as it just really seems like that you want this phone but cant get one, so your stuck with another phone and trying to justify it being better and this being a terrible phone cos of its price. I paid £170 on a £35pm contract for my Arte and its every penny well spent! Some PAYG phones are about that price, if not more, and people pay £30 or more on vouchers. So it all just adds up at the end of the day...

8 out of 10 8800 Arte have got build quality issue with the annoying creaking noise when pressing the slider to reveal the keypad; and there are big gaps on the bottom part of the D-pad & also above the keypad...those gaps allow the backlight to shine through which is very annoying especially at night! Btw, this also apply to the backlight which shine through strongly ONLY on the upper left siide of the D-pad!
This phone has got nice exterior design & good use of material...BUT really concerning the design detail & build quality issue; it's a thumbs down...!!!

Anonymous, 28 May 2008I work for Optus and we sell this phone. Everyone who ever ... moreI lol'd at that.
So here we have two people who work for phone companies saying this is overpriced and do not recommend buying it, and still you all wish to complain about me complaining. I think you are missing the point that people are only trying to save you all money.
I couldn't care less however if you bought this phone or not, it's not my money wasted. But people still should know there are good sturdy classy models out there that don't cost an arm and a leg.
But be warned im starting a petition for "People Who Have Too Much Money And Need To Pay More Taxes So They Don't Buy Over Priced Phones" I'll let you all know when I get a million signatures.

Also regarding the price... keep in mind that only the costs of an artificial sapphire glass for a good watch is around 100-150eur.
Now extrapolating for this phone's screen, you will see that just 300eur-ish goes into the scratch resistant screen glass only.

Good points made, esp with the Watch example. A Casio is so much cheaper with loads of features but id much rather have a solid Rolex with less features (I cant afford a Rolex but I wont slate people for buying one just because I cannot afford one). Back to the Arte, the steel shouldnt affect the signal quality at all. I have not lost reception once with this phone. When I had my Nokia N80 I lost reception many times! And I have not seen one other person with this phone so I love the rare phone factor!

If you use arte on sun, display too dark, hes no special sensitivity from SUNlight!!! be careful when buy so expensive device!!

Truly this is a very nice phone. It's like the difference between a good watch (with sapphire glass, scratch resistant) and a cheap watch. Of course, the cheaper watch has probably a lot more features, but still there are people who prefer quality over other things.
For the one who said that they laugh at the people who buy this... Would you laugh if you were selling watches and people came in and preferred a simple, expensive high quality Swiss watch. Or would you say to them... ok buy this cheaper watch... it has a lot more features and it's 1/10 of the price...
Technical question: Being made from steel, doesn't that affect signal reception (in a bad way)? Or you can have the phone act like a big antenna and get better signal?

Once again the same old debate comes about features. I think everyone knows that this phone aint got the same features as some of the N series, iPhone or many other mobile phones in the market. People who buy this phone are aware about the features of this phone, so they dont buy this phone cos they want excellent features, they buy this phone cos it looks and feels fantastic. I have owned many Nokia phones and have used many other brands for testing. I can tell you, the Nokia 8800 Arte phone is lovely to feel, use and to look at! And people have the right to buy what they want with their hard earned money, so if it means buying a solid steel phone like this which may not have top of the range features, so be it! And people who keep moaning about features, go look at other mobile phones and leave us Arte fans in peace! :)

I work for Optus and we sell this phone. Everyone who ever gets handset we laugh at when they leave because honestly, for how expensive it is, it's pretty bad.
I do not ever recommend this phone to customers. The features it has are avalible on MANY other affordable phones that are also better looking than the 8800.
