I updated the firmware each time a new version was released including the last one. Although i can`t observe some improvements effectively, my phone works fine, no problems at all, i`m very happy with it. I must admit i am a modest user and i use my phone especially for calling and texting, rarely for taking photos and surfing over Wi-Fi/3G, not to mention installing programs, i don`t use any application. In conclusion, even there are some exceptions, my opinion is that an update is recommended. Sorry if i disturbed you with something.

rem, 08 Jul 2009Do you think Nokia released this firmware to cause problems... moreTo REM:

I welcome every update from Nokia. Since I started collecting phones which supported firmware updates, I have ALWAYS updated.

Just that in the case of this new E51's firmware 400.34.011, there are a few quirks.

I'm NOT saying people should avoid this new firmware but if you want restoration to remain as simple as ABC, then one should probably avoid it.

Some people may not experience the problem I have experienced but I'm simply pointing out the quirks I have experienced.

I will tell you one thing I appreciate with this new firmware...the ability to use the CALL KEY to dial a highlighted number in a text message.

Previously when you opened a text containing a phone number or operator code, pressing the CALL KEY would prompt asking you if you wanted to call the highlighted number or the sender of the message. Whichever answer you chose simply went unnoticed and no action took place. You would still see the message on the screen as if you didn't command the phone to do something. Before this new firmware, the ONLY way of calling a highlighted number was selecting OPTIONS - CALL and the type of call (VOICE CALL, VIDEO CALL, INTERNET CALL). The other option was to press the CENTER NAV key and selecting the type of call. Now with this new firmware you have the real way of dialling a number from a text message, with the CALL KEY.

AT the moment I'm ok as I have found a way to get my Fring to work and have no other issues so far...even though my SEGA GENESIS emulator still doesn't work. It begins the installation and then when it seems as if it's about to finish installing an error pops up saying 'UNABLE TO INSTALL'. This NEVER happened with firmware 300.34.56.

I can live without playing games BUT that will turn off anyone...wouldn't it turn you off REM ?

REM, do you own a E51 and did you upgrade to the new firmware 400.34.011 ?

A firmware update is made for improvements so don`t make such advices anymore. Maybe there are cases when users experience minor issues but overall an update is welcomed.

When you purchase this phone tomorrow more than likely it will have the 220.xx.xx or 300.xx.xx firmware. Those are more than good enough. Don't upgrade to 400.xx.xx. It has some quirks. Some programs like Fring behaves erratic with it...there are some workarounds to getting these programs to work properly but it's not worth the hassles so stick with whatever your E51 comes with.

My friends of GSMArena let us all share our VOIP/SIP numbers/addresses with each other so we can maximise our communication with this lovely phone.

I use Challengermobile (www.challengermobile.com) and my VOIP/SIP number is the same as my GSM number...18763716012.

I truly regret updating my firmware to 400.34.011.

More than one person says the internet is faster will it seems the same to me.

My BIGGEST complaint right now is that the earpiece volume is TOO LOW now.

TOLIS29, JEEWAN and the others do you find this with your E51 as well ?

Previously I could hear my callers quite easily with the earpiece volume set to 2 or 3 out of 10. Now I have to max it to 10 and I still don't hear the callers as loud when it was set to 3. Believe it or not this is the case with my E51.

Earlier this morning I was on the road which was quite noisy and I could hardly hear the caller. This is a shame because I have always boasted how loud the earpiece volume was now it's lower than any other Nokia I ever had. Nokia better fix this right away with a new firmware.

                                        My Nokia E51 friends:

At the moment there's ONLY ONE video conferencing software out there and it's free. It supports Wi-Fi, 3G and more connectivity options.

It's really a SIP / VOIP phone which means you are able to make internet calls as well as see who you are speaking to. You can't ask for anything more knowing that it's free to download and free to use.

Get it and let us all hear each other's voice and see each other via video conferencing.

You can use either your phone or PC to download it.
