i updated my lumia 520 to "lumia black" and its working perfectly, i love the features added though they are not much. it includes double tap to wake, deactivation of the screen rotation.... etc. u can try it as well

'first circle ' eeeeaasy ! : ))

I do not know if it will work as modem, but what I do know is that there is an internet sharing feature. You can find it in Settings -> internet sharing. Switch it on. Make sure that mobile network is enabled, then, the connection name and passcode should appear on your phone. Connect on the internet on your laptop! Hope it helped!
