Anonymous, 23 Aug 2010This is starting to be a bit of a joke... Now the release d... moreThe leading people at Nokia said that they will not release it until they are happy with the software (probably cos of what happened with N97), and it's probably better this way.
The finnish online store has been saying end of september for a good while now and I'm fine with that. I'd guess it has a fair chance of getting earlier though, if the software gets in acceptable condition.

This is starting to be a bit of a joke... Now the release date is pushed again until the end of the month!! And still no official statement from Nokia!?!? Seriously... What do you Nokia fans have to say about that?? Feels to me quite unprofessional... Almost as ridiculous as Iphone´s antenna issue... Probably HTC will be faster to release the Desire HD even if it is only at the rumor stage today...

I just noticed people were writign follow up posts to people who just don't get procesor design & performance. So I have just made this point within the N9 comments posts forum section. So I thought it right to copy & paste it to this forum to re iterate the point once again. btw, good examples Matt.
Let's see how many people stop believing in pure clock ticks in processors. As mentioned this is just one small area of concern for modern day CPU/s whether they are desktop or SOC processors.
The negative effect will be on battery life for many CPU's. Also the OS is the complete controller of power consumption of the CPU & all other aspects of chipset,c motherboard, memory, GPU, Network connectivity radio modules will all hamper battery life in some way unless the OS uses these components low power to it's advantage or not. Obviosly an OS with more I/Os overhead & constant access & usage will only limit the deevices low power capabilities unless it's used right.
For this I would simply say the OS is the most important control factor to consider using the hardware to the best of their capabilities. If the OS is tasking them more or is less eficient in CPU, ram etc aswell as not using other low power hardware to their benefits. It's down to OS totally.
The degree of different hardware also use different amoutns of power, their are so many factors on which hardware is being included & being used in any given mobile. This is why it's good to nkow your hardware, specifications & know about the OS.
Cheers

For modern CPUs there is much more in the performance game, as CPUs have different number of execution units, different cache sizes, different ways of transferring data inside the CPU, different ways of processing the instructions inside the execution units, different clock rates with the outside world
I'm pretty sure there will not be much of a performance drop between 680Mhz 1000Mhz. The most important factor is how the Operating system will take advantage of every bit of the hardware including circuitboard, chipset, cpu's processing power/abilities & how efficiently it uses the ram available lightly without using too much.
It depends on the specification of the particular CPU, don't forget the higher clock cycles instructions per second clock frequencies of the faster cpu is oly one aspect of the total operations of processes & stages which are carried out. A processor with more transistos may switch faster & also could use less power but could use more power with less transistors which may not be as economical.
You have got to consider the complete design of the processor at the architecural level. The pipeline, how many stages are required to complete an instruction. Ho much arithmetic, how many integers a CPU can count, multiply, take away. Cache matters for prefecthing data, transistor count matters for power consumption. The bus data speeds matter.
The N9 with Meego may have higher Operating specifications but as all we based OS's like Android need such power only for the overheads of being connected to the tag clouds. For being ocnnected to the internet & the power is used when the kind of bandwith that apps need to be in constant connection to, download, synch, data retrival back & forth. This is when the higher bandwith extra power of higher end components will help. Having such a phone the power will be needed for this purpose. Otherwise higher spec phones will utilize more power.
This is why I wouldn't just call a 1000Mhz CPu faster than a 683Mhz CPU. Because you don't know the technical differences between how they complete their jobs overall. Some CPU's may in fact be more comnplex, do more in less time regardless of frequencies of a gve clock cyle. The map has to be more capable of such Processors. Clock frequncies then don't mean much if any other part of the processor is not capable or as upto scratch in how logically well it does it's job.

Wheez, 23 Aug 2010What is there dying in Symbian?
It's still the biggest a... moreit might be the biggest, but it's also declining at an extremely fast rate. growth, relative to the number of markets it's available in isnt as good as android
you could argue that windows mobile is just as bad as symbian in this respect, but windows mobile can just be customised to look like anything, plus you can dual boot android, so there isnt the same problem.

To all haters here who think the N8 is hopelessly underspecified here are two examples in other fields:
1.
take a Lotus with a 1.8 liter engine and a Hummer with a 3.7 liter engine
wich one do you think will get you there faster?
for anyone who still doesn't get it, the type of engine is the hardware such as processor etc... the car itself is the OS... so the engine powers the car like the processor etc. power the cell phone
for a perfectly balanced and light OS/car (Lotus) you don't need a strong engine/processor to go fast and be agile
for a sluggish, heavy car/OS (OS's like Android and Windows Mobile) you need a ton of power in your engine/processor, and still you won't go faster than the Lotus
2.
being a freelance photographer, i'd like to take an example from my field of work.
Most of the people here will know enough about photography to understand what ISO is and what it's effects are (high ISO -->less light needed (shorter shutter times in same lighting) BUT more noise)
If I want to take a shot that would at least require ISO 800 to exclude motion unsharpness, I will set it tot ISO 800. Why would I set it any higher? Sure it will give my a shorter shutter time but I won't notice this, the picture won't be better. The larger amount of noise is someting I will notice if I would set it to 1600. That is why I never put my ISO higher than required because there's no point! it only gives you more noise
Compare this to the processor you use in a cell phone. If you can make the phone fast enough with a 680mhz processor, why for Pete's sake would you put in a 1Ghz processor that will only consume more battery (even if marginally more) and even if it does use the same amount of battery due to very good management, it still is more expensive... so no advantage whatsoever
I don't care if my comparisons are not perfectly correct. I just want to show that comparing ONLY the hardware specs is absolutely no grounds for bashing a phone or saying it is outdated

Below query is for the guys frm India,
Anybody submitted their N8 application ideas ??
It seems that i cannot reuse the same email id to suggest multiple ideas?
Or anyone tell me how to register and reuse the same email id to suggest multiple application ideas??.
( There is no registration page available :( )

Anonymous, 22 Aug 2010had a nokia rep tell me a lil about the handset.. looks ama... moreyou mean recording, pausing, resume recording, stopping and cutting films? yip sure did that in avatar... or were you talking abot sifi editing which requires quite an updated compute to do so plus the software to do it *or are you talking about recording in 3D because i think if it was so easy that you can stick the 3D recording soft in a mobile camera, i think every camera out there would have 3D.

I am thinking this phone might be able to run meego. Remember when N9 first leaked? It was running symbian^3 and now it seems it might b running meego. Considering N8 and N9 have roughly the same specs I think my theory is possible.
