    Where have you heard that?. Doesn't Android 2.2 support flash?.

              @nute. The problem we all face. You can't win. Because the more RAM you get, the more memory will be used up by the OS's glamour & bloatware eating it up... shame. 680Mhz is plenty to run symbian. It's only needed to start the phone & open apps. N8 having GPU will drive the front end, taking the loa

              d off of the processor. it didn't before. You will have increased bandwith for the apps & multi-tasking. It will seem much smoother & faster because of this fact.

                Report from October 2009

                Gartner released a slightly revised outlook for the 2012 mobile operating system market.

                When Gartner first reported its 2012 prediction a week ago, Windows Mobile was in third place with an estimated 12.8 percent of the market. This week Gartner has Windows Mobile in fifth place with only 9 percent. The shift in confidence is a response to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer publicly expressing disappointment in the Windows Mobile development team, and some of the initial reviews of the Windows Mobile 6.5 OS.

                The report is simply an opinion. You can take the Gartner prognostications with a grain of salt except for two things:
                1) Gartner does this for a living so it ought to be relatively accurate in predicting market trends
                2) Gartner reports can become self-fulfilling prophecies in effect.

                Device manufacturers and application developers may base development decisions on Gartner's predictions of which mobile OS's will have the most market share. Decisions based on the Gartner predictions can have a domino effect which leads to the predictions being ultimately correct.

                I am not Gartner, but I'll give you my two cents. By 2012 I believe that Android will surpass Symbian for the number one slot, and I believe that Windows Mobile will make a rebound and land in fourth, or maybe even third place. Check back with me in 3 years.

                      No scrap what I said before. I was trying to simply demonstrate running requirements of one OS vs another. If I was going to correlate any comparison between OS vs oS, it should be Win 98 vs Xp.

                      It depends how you look at it I suppose aswell. Very early Xp computer hardware didn't need any change from Win 98 to Xp. Xp could run with 64Mb & 233Mhz min Pentium. But Xp's maximum safe recommended running requirement is 300Mhz.

                      Vista & Win 7. Vista home can use 512mb min & recommended min of 1Gb same for Win 7. CPU power is higher than Xp at 1Ghz min. But later Xp Computers running 1Ghz & 1Gb or 2GB like me then it's a dif story. You wouldn't have to upgrade the hardware.

                        Everyone knows where N8 will do good so I don’t want to repeat them. Places where N8 won’t do good is

                        Battery life. Non easily removable battery
                        • 1200mAh? Hmm. Reports from users and claims from Nokia say it would equal or better the N97 (which has 1500mAh). I’ve got my Proporta Portable Charger if I ever do need to use the N8 heavily for a full day.

                        The web browser.
                        • This is my biggest fear with Symbian^3. How will the browser fare? I’m not too convinced by early demo videos. Plus, N900 and MicroB has set my expectations extremely high with Maemo5′s Mozilla based desktop like performance. Then again, they are non-final firmware. Alternative browsers include Opera Mobile of course, which will provide a closer desktop like experience (moins flash).

                        Mono Speakers
                        • Though much better than both N97′s speakers combined as these speakers are loud and clear not tinny like N97.

                        Symbian^3 quirks
                        • S^3 UI may still be confusing and may lag. Certain videos and quick personal demos show otherwise, but it’s worth being cautious.

                        3.5″ nHD screen may not be enough for some
                        • For mass market, 3.5″ might be most ideal, though technology leaders may want larger 4-4.3″ screens with at least WVGA resolution.

                        Lack of physical QWERTY keyboard
                        • Physical buttons may have drawn early N97 users and those same people might not be willing to give up an interface without real hard buttons. Larger 4″ with QWERTY may appear at Nokia World 2010 with the rumoured Nokia E7.

                        No lens cover
                        • Hardened glass to prevent scratching (though I am concerned with smudging destroying photos – though iPhone/5800 etc users have managed well without). This issue has fixed in later N97 builds and you could drop your N97 off at Nokia care for repair. But this should never have been an issue in the first place.

                        Arm 11 680MHz CPU with dedicated (Broadcom?) GPU.
                        • I won’t (more can’t) go into CPU numbers other than noting that S^3 is more GPU based. The OS is more reliant on the GPU. (There are many factors involved too. Pricing maybe.) But what is important to know is that processor number is not the end all and be all.

                            SE has learned from its mistake and changed its strategy. They were going down on profit and their sales were decreasing quarter on quarter. Then they realized diversification and they released following devices.

                            • Windows Mobile - Xperia X1
                            • Symbian – Satio (Idou), Vivaz and Vivaz Pro
                            • Android - Xperia X10, Mini and Pro

                            It would not be a wonder if SE comes up with Bada Phone (if Samsung allows) and MeeGo based devices.

                            Now Nokia has finally realized the mistake and they started deversificationn.

                            • Symbian – Almost all Nokia devices
                            • Maemo - Nokia N900
                            • Windows – rumored
                            • Android – Can’t say

                            But it would not surprise me if Nokia embraces Android. Reason being, following companies have android based devices
                            1. Samsung
                            2. SE
                            3. HTC
                            4. ACER
                            5. Toshiba
                            6. Dell

                            Now NOKIA will be going where Market leads it and I am sure, no matter what people argue about, Android is future of Mobile OS.

                              While the Google-backed Android mobile operating system currently runs on less than 2% of all smartphones, Gartner Inc. predicts it will surge to 14% of the global smartphone market in 2012 -- ahead of the iPhone, as well as Windows Mobile and BlackBerry smartphones.

                              In that year, Gartner forecasts Android will actually rank second globally, behind the Symbian OS, which is used in Nokia devices that are highly popular in Europe and many countries outside the U.S. Symbian now runs on about half of all smartphones, but will fall to 39% in 2012, Gartner says.

                                I won't recommend any phone with less than 512MB Ram. I have constant issues with my Nokia 5800's 128MB app memory. And i hope they made this phone more stable than 5800 and N97.

Engineer man :) maybe go to Microsoft courses - win 7 need 2gigs of ram for best performance - you can use 1gig unless you only listening winamp.

                                      Absolutely. You bet S^3 will be radically different from any other S^* device you'll have used before. People have no idea that S^* is a light OS. The only area it currently fails in is glamour. UI, widgets & especially simple & quick functionality. S^3 will radically change this.

                                      Nokia realise where S^* is weak & know where the competition is excelling. They have learned one or two things. There will definately be improvements this time on larger scale.

                                      For a start, symbian devices use great ARM processors, & because symbian is light & very efficient it isn't weighed down & doesn't need fast CPU's. It utilizes very little overheads in terms of CPU requests. It's also economical in the battery life department. Plus is isn't weighed down with bloatware.

                                      The difference you'll see is in the UI 3d interface of the OS, & widgets & homescreen department. This will be properly hardware accelerated by a dedicated GPU which is fast & will be responsible for drawing every pixel onto screen faster than CPU of before which no other Symbian phone has utlized before.

                                      Also S^3 will be much simpler & quicker to navigate through menu structure with one touch rather than double clicking through lots of menus in older OS's. More buttons will be implemented into each menu to make it Quicker to access.

                                      All this means that Symbian will excel & will be much quicker with a 680Mhz ARM CPU utilizing an ever lighter, kernel modified, memory management modified & GPU operated interface. Believe me when i say that the CPU is more than adequate enough.

                                      Android is much like comparing Older windows OS to newer ones from Microsoft. New OS came along needing higher requirements in terms of specification & hardware needing an upgrade in hardware such as vista for machine built for Windows XP for example. Then Win 7 came along & actually reversed that trend. Win 7 requires less powerful hardware operating requirements than Windows XP.

                                      The same can be said for Symbian vs Android devices. It's all about the operating requirements of the software, how manageable & resourceful the OS is. The N8 hardware & S^3 is still in beta testing stages. Don't make asumptions that the N8 doesn't have a fast enough CPU, that's just rubbish.
