The usual method of updating the phone is by using Nokia Suite on the PC. You can download the latest Beta version (which is stable as I've been using it for a while now) from http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-suite-beta?restsso_passive=true.
I will say though, I wasn't at all impressed with the Anna update as it didn't bring much of an improvement to my phone. The portrait QWERTY is painful to use if you've big fingers and the Home screen swiping is laggy, so is the kinetic scrolling. The default web browser hasn't improved much either so I'm still using Opera mobile.
You'd probably be better off waiting for the Belle update which is due for release in February.
Can I ask what your product code is so I can check if Anna is available for your handset or not. Type *#0000# into the phones dial pad and look for an eight digit code starting with 05******. There are still some N8's that haven't been given the update yet.

got the N8 recently and love it. Its suprisingly good despite complaints. It has a few issues with usuability but user guide sorts that out with ease. However, i'm struggling to upgrade to Symbian Anna. Can you please direct to where and how i can download it directly to my phone. And is Anna any better?

First off download and install Mediainfo from http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en. When it's installed right click on your video file and select Mediainfo from the context menu to display all the properties of the file. Have a look for CABAC reference frames and make sure it is set at 4 or less. If CABAC is higher than 4 the N8 won't be able to play the file.
To remove or lower CABAC you will need to download and install Super video converter from http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_video/convert_video/super.cfm.
Have a good read through the instructions and help file to understand how to use it to alter the CABAC refernce frames. It's not the simplest piece of software to use but it is comprehensive and feature packed even though it is free software.

I don't understand, when ever I put a MKV video file in my N8 it just plays the sound. Resolution is 720p, frames are at 24, and file is about 1 GB. Why does this happen? Help Please!!! :D

Before buying n8 i want t... moreNo, you cant play directly , you need to convert them by video converter programs .. symbian phones support avi tbut thats not the one u see on ur pc ... in short u need to convert them.. for best results convert your files into .mp4 format

One of the best symbian phones. Some features like 12mp camera are the best in all mobile phones. Everything in this phone is excellent. I have used this mobile & i love it very much.

The N8 is capable of playing AVI and MKV files as long as the video and audio streams are encoded correctly.
The video stream needs to be less than 4 GB in size (FAT 32 limitation) and CABAC reference frames needs to be set at 4 or less. Also, frame rate should be set to 30 fps or less and scale size no greater than 720p.
The audio stream should be in the AC3 (Dolby Digital) format.

got my own N8 2 weeks ago and upgraded to Anna immediately. Despite the critism, i still find the phone awesome. Very responsive touchscreen, very sturdy phone, very nice camera, excellent browsing experience (i use Opera with Wifi everyday, 15-20hrs non stop. Battery life is ok despite d fact dat it s a smartphone (Trust nokia when it comes to sturdiness and battery performance) Android is better than symbian, True! but symbian-Anna aint bad at all. Havnt got any prob with it (despite usin it nonstop for 2wks). I neva regretted purshasing this. I luv N8. Guess some people should take time to get used to the device other than complaining. U gonna find out dat the answer to ur complaints are located just in the device. Currently pasting this from my N8. I recommed to anyone.

oh its a great phone. Its camera is great, battery is also great i think yet symbian is better than android only applicable for nokia n8
