FROM NOKIA SUPPORT DISCUSSIONS:

I have examined this issue really REALLY deep.

While mine doesn't have the issue really much at all, I can MAKE it look bad with a few settings to the screen.. From what I have found, it's a software issue, and not a screen issue.

Do this as a test.. Set the light sensor to maximum, and be in a good lit room.. The issue nearly goes away completely.. Cover the light sensor with your finger. Watch the screen dim, when it initially goes dim, the greys are fine, but then the firmware makes an adjustment to the black levels so that dark grey isn't black, but still visible.. It is THIS black level/contrast adjustment that is tinkering with the color levels too.. It looks like they try and compensate for color changes when a display goes dim, but go far too overboard.

Here is my screen at max brightness.

No problem with colors really.

But here's the screen at the dimmest (with the camera exposure set to match the chart from the previous shot.)

Notice how it gets a bit purplish now.

It is definitely software, from what my tests have shown. So it is fixable.. As for reports of some doing it and others not, it could be possible the light sensor setting is different, or some firmwares have a patched black level adjustment calibration.

Correction, mine also shows purple-pink clock display.
At first I tought you guys mean standby "big clock" which is normal color, not the clock shown when you press menu button from the standby mode... A shame, hopefully Nokia can fix it :(

guys, while organising my menu icons accidently i moved my 'office' icon to root(main) menu. AS u all know, by default it stays under 'applications' menu.
So, is there any way i can move it to original place?
plzz, suggest me some easy and effective way either than forcing me to hard resetting kinda thing..

          Thanx in advance!!!

Check out if your N8 has faulty display

                1. use midnight silver theme -- make sure you have analouge screen saver clock -- make sure brightness is down ---flick lock switch -- when screen is locked press menu key to bring up the clock

                2. using midnight silver theme -- download qt torch -- open it up -- the background will look a dark brown/purple -- keep your eyes on the two touch buttons at bottom of screen -- press torch button -- as screen gets brighter watch the two touch buttons go from a greyish purple to the black they are supposed to be as if by magic

                3. there are many more methods of seeing it like watching the tron trailer and watching the blacks mix to a purple hue and many more

                4. download the test image from symbianusers. blogspot adjust the display brightness to lowest. If it shows purple tint please let me know @ symbianusers. blogspot

I've had this device for 5 days now, and I must say it's brilliant piece of advanced technology cleverly incorporated into elegant hardware unit. Like someone said, it's not only the technology, it's how you use it.
Only software is somehow lagging behind, namely browser, writing and few GUI and OS glitches that can be hopefully fixed in future OS relases and firmware updates.
P.S No bad screen, no lockups, no abnormal freezes or hiccups whatsoever.
My N8 is Made in Finland.
                            Have a nice day!

If the left, you have a broken phone, if the right, don't worry.

                                1. Everything's still the same?
The interface on the N8 looks a lot like the one on the much older N97, which says a lot about the new OS. Not much has been done to make it slicker, or even look a bit different. We're all for nostalgia and all but not when it comes to UI design!
                                2. Feels clunky with too many menu options: There are still too many menus and sub menus to manage the options and settings in both the OS and within apps.
                                3. Handicapped Widgets: Widget size on the 3 home screens is limited, which not only reduces functionality, but also makes certain widgets a pain to use. Imagine catching up on ur twitter timeline and only and being able to read one tweet with every scroll.
                                4. Ovi store is sparse: Despite Nokia's best effort , the ovi store z far behind apple's app store and android's market.
                                5. Even nokia may drop symbian.
