Admit it! N81 is a disaster! During the time when the first Nseries were introduced, N90 was the first 2MP camera phone from Nokia because it's the flagship camera phone that time. N91 wasn't supposed to rival the N90 but yet it's equipped with a 2MP camera with the same CIF video resolution. 3 years ago, with N81, nothing has changed, I mean, something has changed, backwards. Still 2MP for N81, With N95 being prior to this one and even some S40 phones equipped with a 3.2MP camera, Nokia didn't even throw at least a 3.2MP one for this. And the video resolution? QVGA only that Nokia even lied and fooled the public stating that it was VGA. And they tagged it with a price almost the same as N82! Isn't that shameful?

From what I can see, N81 will be or should I say, is already a market flop just like Mariah Carey's "Glitter." With so many more powerful and feature-rich handsets from Nokia itself and from other brands, N81 will not gain sales until it's price drops about more than half of it's initial price. While N91, despite it's very late commercial release is already a market success just like Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi." See the connection? Lol! :-p

I have to clarify one thing: The N81 was NEVER meant to replace N91.
It's like comparing apples from oranges.

Back in 2005, the N91 was in a league of its own. It is/was the BEST music phone made by Nokia (and most probably the best music phone to date). Only Samsung's i450 can rival it's sonic experience (remember, Samsung makes the audio chips for iPod, thus they can make vast improvements for their own audio chips).

But it was thwarted by a laggy and extremely sensitive HDD, VERY low res screen, lack of RAM power and hefty weight. After it's release, Nokia swore to never make another phone w/ HDD storage.

Please remember that every phone has it's flaws. No phone is designed to be perfect. If there was a perfect phone, there will be no competition.
And of course, no sales gains :)

Just because the N90 didn't sell as much doesn't mean it wasn't a great device. From what i remember most Symbian S60 fans got a N90 because it had a high quality screen, great camera and that it had OS8 or got a N70. Most held out until the N80 arrived.
With all those first(s) the N91 brought what more could the N81 bring? I think the Navi-wheel, Gaming keys are a good addition lol.
N81 camera was an after thought lol. The videos taken by N81 are better than N91 im sorry to say but thats the truth, i have videos taken by my N81, N80 and a mates N91-8gb. The N80 and N91 had higher res but also more noise whereas N81 is smaller res with with more clarity and AMAZING sound recording, at the end of the day N81 is a Music, Gaming, and Video device hence the three diff positions you can hold it in, so why expect a good camera.

Excuse me! N90 is a total market flop! N90's close rival that time is its little brother the N70 which turned out to be the best seller of all the Nseries while the N90 was quickly vanished into oblivion. While the N91 during its time brought so many FIRSTS to the mobile technology: first phone with multigigabyte hard drive, first Nokia phone with 3.5mm audio jack, first S60 3rd Edition phone, first S60 to have Wifi module, and first to be equipped with a dedicated audio chip. Just look in the N91 section and see how many user responses and comments N91 has generated! N81 should be a full pledged multimedia device because it's a new era now! Even low end phones are capable of multimedia functions. Come to think of it. N81 is stuck with a 2MP camera, which is one of the worst 2MP cameras ever! N91s camera is much better and records better videos in better resolution. What a shame! That's my point! N81 doesn't hold up to the legacy that N91 has left behind.

You seem to be forgetting the N91's HDD problems, low res screen, weak batt etc. . .
The N81 was never really made to be special, its just an N91 improvement. The N91 was not what NOKIA fans were after, the N90 was,it had a 2MP AF Carl Zeiss camera, 352x418 hi res screen, and had S60v2 OS8 which had TONS of applications. All the N91 had over N90 was Wi-Fi and the sound chip which many didn't know much about at the time. There will never be a N91-type of device again, it was such a Music Orientated device that all the other features took a backseat. It was very heavy, had a disgusting screen,a poorly positioned menu key, not enough ram for multitasking, slow UI, slow HDD even, poor battery, and Web browsing on it wasn't that great, the N81 came to improve on all of that and add some new things here and there, the Nseries will not have a device like an N91 again, they are now Multimedia devices with more than one talent LOL. Most are focused on a certain audiances but also have extra features to offer.
IMO if i was a N91 owner i would appretiate the N81 as an upgrade with its improvements and new features. Ive used a mates N91-8GB for a weekend then gone back to my N81 and realy enjoyd going back to this.
I liked the in the beginning N91 though and still do, it came with 4GB when it was still new and 4GB was a lot at the time, and as a Music phone NO OTHER touched it, SE tried with their W950, Samsung tried with their F300 or whatever it was and Moto tried with the E2 Rokr but NONE came close to an N91.

N81 8GB doesn't hold up to the legacy that N91 has left behind. N91 during its time is the most feature-rich handset of all, the lust of every Nokia fanboy. N81 8GB brings no revolutionary features at all. What it has, has already been there long ago. If ure a music aficionado & never had a N91, N81 8GB is a decent catch. But if u have N91 already, go & pick another expensive device other than N81 8GB.

Yep,i agree with Jon2, there are some nice features in N95-8gb that N81 is missing like TV-Out and the 5mp camera. 3.5G HSDPA realy depends on your network, i use GPRS/EDGE when surfing the net away from home, and use 3G to download big files when downloading away from home but otherwise use Wi-Fi, and next year when im in University il use the Wi-Fi on campus, its a lot faster and more reliable than 3G And HSDPA. HSDPA is still not very reliable though.

you can pull off the keypad with your fingers . Dont do it though as you will rip the holds that stick it to the sides... I bought this phone and must say it creeks loads and has worse build quality than any phone i ever owned yet twice the price i ever paid. It looks great on paper but dont make the mistake i made and get it. Did i say the navi wheel sucks after a few months? Nokia are blaming it on overuse but that is not an excuse. Camera shots have lots of green and video is only 240x320 even though nokia website says otherwise. Their is loads of light that leaks out the sides in the dark as well. Slider wobbles 2. Should cost 90euro not 300

It does'nt matter to have HSDPA coz it'd WiFi. WiFi runs you creep, its free & fast too. I live in Riyadh, there are many free access points here. So, I don't need to pay for surfing ;). I bought this phone later this evening. Its sound on-board speakers are not good like 5700 but on headphones, 5700 is as comparing 6600 with N95. Overall, I'm impressed with this phone but it's weights too.

You I have to say you are incorrect.
Not bashing N81 (since I also own one), but it lacks many features when compared to my N95 8GB.

ie. WRT, Flash lite 3, Demand paging, TV-Out, Accelerometer, 3.5G(HSDPA)

These are just some of the niceties :)

well n-81 is cool but not as good as nokia n-81 8gb..with 8gb of space lol u can do a lot..if u compare n-95 8gb with n-81 8gb,there is only one difference...camera.former has 5mpxl cam n later has 2 mpxl cam...if u want to use uor phone for photography..then 5mpxl is ok..if u use uor cam less, then whaz the use in spending more money for the phone just for camera purpose...isnt it??

n91/n91 8gb has better build and more solid than n81/n81 8gb. sonic experience is also better in n91/n91 8gb even though n81/n81 8gb has same sound chip as n91/n91 8gb. the reason is n91/n91 8gb has more audio power and greater bass, and also n91/n91 8gb equalizer is more flexible to tweak since its an 8-band, whereas n81/n81 8gb is only 5-band. the n81/n81 8gb beats the n91/n91 8gb in the rest of the features other than those i've mentioned. ooppss..i forgot, n91/n91 8gb has better camera although lacking that useless LED flash, image result when viewed on the pc is better in n91/n91 8gb..n81/n81 8gb has some sort of tint in its pictures. i have both phones n91 & n81 8gb. n81 8gb is better overall, but i'd still give the credit of the better in audio quality to the n91.
