Nokia does not control the input for their CMOS sensors, neither can they control what lenses they get. What on the module is on the module - its not some nokia CMOS with a special carl zeiss design. (Tessar desgins are very common and cheap even though many lenses don't say they are tessar). what Nokia did good for the N95 was their algorithms for image processing. Thee N86 looks like it has bad quality initially but remember the N95 image quality becamse gradually better over several updates.
Carl Zeiss really means nothing. Even their manual focus lenses are sturuggling to keep up with the higher end glass from other respective manufacterers (Minus sony, Zeiss is their premium glass). Pentax FA*, Canon L and Nikkor stuff is better.

NO!!!!!
But the digital camera and lens companies are great.all credit of the camera quality should be given to these companies not to nokia...Nokia without these companies is NOTHING.
How can you compare Nokia that cant make a camera with the other phone company which can make a camera by them selves on their phone like SAMSUNG and SONY.

if nokia wants to compare their camera quality so nokia should make a camera by them selves with their real strengt.

you should know this information below :

their sensor quality is low and nokia did it again that they use CMOS sensor from the other company.Even nokia cant make a low CMOS sensor quality.Nokia is just a nokia phone and NOTHING!

I did calculations on a DOF calculator for a 1/3" sensor. on f/2.4 your min focusing distance is 3", at F/4,8 the minimun focusing distance is 2.4"....Big deal!

SE IDOU is of a higher class and not even worth mensioning here because N86 is simply not targeted to the market intended for SE IDOU which is the high end or for those that "can afford".

This 12MP thing of SONY is already world-renowned. Justify Nokia with its strong point... is that clear to you now?

But what this anonymous guy from "Sff9" was talking was that it is not all about apertures, most phones may have fixed fully opened apertures but they do have auto focus and their imagers are much more high-res.
You may have a perfectly focused subject because you can stop down your aperture to increase dept-of-field but if your imager is low-res, your perfectly focused subject will not be sampled as high-res because of your low-res imager.

What has th... moreaperture n wide angle lens are advance camera features.aperture job is not only light controlling but also increase focus range.speacialy variable aperture in needed to landscape photo shoot,whn u want to long focused photo wit more deatail.just for example if 2.8 aperture can focus .5 km. thn aperture 4.8 can focus 2km with deatil..n wide angle lens help u to extremly focus on ur desired subject with less distance between u n subject which means more sharper n contrasty pic..

I am not a fan of either phones by SE and Nokia, but seeing somebody sowing wrong infos is not correct.
Friend, if I were you, do not justify Nokia with the lens you are mumbling because that will make Nokia down because SONY has its own proprietary lens that is unmatched to date, it is this... "IU060F" lens module with 12.25 effective megapixel resolution equipped with lens and auto focus functions, this module is the industry's smallest and thinnest in their class.
OK friend, did I make myself clear to you?
I may repeat, do not justify Nokia with your lens that is not made by Nokia because it is a GREAT DISSERVICE TO NOKIA, YOU ARE UNKNOWINGLY BRINGING NOKIA DOWN.

I think i know why nokia is no 1 phone. U just look at this forum and be a evidence that so many phone lover and different type people at this forum. Nokia is very popular to them and it would be a free advertising.

The lens has a very minor effe... moreYou are absolutely right... with these very tiny phone lenses, at this moment in time nothing can be done about it, different technologies are still in the drawing board using different mediums in place of glass that includes different kinds of fluids in place of glass.
The battle for supremacy at this moment in time is in the digital processing of images and that starts from the front end which is the sensor, SONY wins handily at this stage with their first 12MP sensor to be used in the SE IDOU. The chipsets hardware and firmwares that process the digital 0-1 from the sensor is a free for all including softwae and hardware giants and you may wonder that phone makers are just buying it from OEMs except a few who have their own proprietary chipsets and firmwares including SONY.
