    Short review from Midas

I finally got to use the n97 yesterday at the nokia retail store in london and the first thing i thought when i held it was how small and light it felt. I was holding my n95 in my other hand and it didn't feel any heavier as the spec sheet would say. Also another comparison is that its only roughly 10mm longer than n95. First thing i done was went to the applications menu to see what was pre-installed and what it would support. I was happy to see BBC iPlayer and SKYPE (which some doubted). These were so much more i cant list them.

The touch screen was very responsive. You dnt have to apply too much pressure. I found that on some screens your finger acts as a cursor so sometimes u have to double click. I found this the only annoying but soon got use to it in seconds. Using the scroll bar didn't appeal to me BUT it wasn't frustrating. Its easy to grab it despite how small it is. I would've like to see kinetic flick scrolling in the menu (as it does have in the internet browser) BUT you will later see why nokia didn't include this in menus. Its because there's not that many long lists of things that you have to scroll through. (i've noticed other review sites fail to mention this, probably because they're iPhone biased). The screen transitioning from portrait to landscape is smooth and in short delay.

Then i went to messaging. Nokia have removed a few things from the UK and EU release which they've kept in the asian market. The virtual keyboard wasn't there (i'd find it pointless anyway) and the stylus doesn't come with it. For me personally i wouldn't use that either. The hardware keyboard was easy to use, button presses very responsive. I thought i'd have problem with the space bar on the right but you soon get use to this as its placed directly under the bone in the middle under your right thumb when using both hands. Other ways to text was the virtual alpha numeric keypad or handwriting recognition. But i found the hw keyboard will always be the better option.

Finally speed. On the browser, internet pages opened up in seconds with perfect page rendering with flash support. In general you find that the applications don't use so much RAM so the phone doesn't slow down. (i had the browser open as well as ovi whilst using the bbc iplayer application). The processor despite criticism copes very well and is more than equipped for the job.

I didn't get too long to use it. Only 45mins because the store rep started thinkin i was going to run off with it (i would've if she turned her back lol). I tested a few others but my fingers are sweating. Ask if you have any questions.

By the way i wrote this very quickly in less than 15mins using the n97!

Mizuchi, 13 Jun 2009Lol you forgot the voice plan ontop of the data plan which ... moreI didn't forget voice plan. I said voice plan on top of data charges. Youneed a voice plan anyways unless you're prepaid.

I'll have to check out this 5800 thing with rogers. Just curious what kind of data plan they hit the customers with.

I've been following this phone for almost 6 months, watching videos and reading previews and reviews and seeing how it evolved.... I'm getting one shortly as soon as it hit the market here... which should be by the end of this month, just can't wait..... Wish I could sleep the period till it come out coz ever since Nokia released N97 world wide, every day I feel depressed b/c I know that people out there have tried it and I didn't :( :( :(

n97 screen is much reponsive than 5800, this is good news

i have tested it in singapore shops
this phone is sold out in the shop i visited today

it is priced Singapore dollar 634+ two years contract(Singapore dollar around 22/month)

it is beatiful, and fast despite 434MHZ and 128ram

N97 is the best design ever, its design attracts more people!!!!!!!

well done nokia keep it up

my only complaint is the scrollbar in the menu, why cant nokia use flick scrooll in menu and list? in my opinion flick scroll is a must for touch screen, scrollbar is for non touch phone!!!

anyway , this phone will boost nokia sale of 2009.

looking forward to september 1-2 nokia world announcement! N98 touch? E91 touch? EM capacitive touch? E71i(3.5mm headphone jack?, 5MP carl zeiss len? with touch capability?)

and why there is no S60v3 touch OS for E71i?? is it a good idea?

                                        Finnally tested it in Singapore!

Very fast and 128 ram is ok

Only complaint is the use of scollbar!:(

The plastic is of high quality and much better than 5800
