Adish - try installing phonealarm (freeware) it does profile management like a normal phone, has a today-plug in, and manages volume of alerts independent of the volume of the device. So you can have a very very loud SMS tone and a quiet ring tone on the same time. It lets you specify repeat of tones and shows you a today-screen list of #of msgs, #of calls, etc. I use it for my atom because the standard ringtones/alerts were too quiet and i kept missing calls.

Atom has one major bug. When you go into buildings or poor reception area you loose your reception even if for a little while and then come back into good reception area the phone cannot make a phone call. this problem still exists from day 1 and still not fixed by 02. and it does not look any better with the new update coming in April looks like they can't fix it. i am only going to hold on to the atom untill sony brings out the P990 in about 2 mths. i have had enough with atom. you can't even charge the atom with car charger.

I have both Fido and Rogers chips... though Rogers is my primary... I find that under Rogers I basically get practically the same reception levels as my V3...
though in marginal areas... though there is service and connectivity, the actual sound quality of transmision is poor... (incoming sound is clear... outgoing is reported as breking up and staticy)..

To Rick,
When I first bought the Atom, I was concerned about the band frequency issue just like you. I'm with Fido. I find the Atom works very well. But I must warn you that if you work with Rogers you might have different results. Since Rogers' SIM tends to select its own network, which is 850. Fido's SIM was designed to select the 1900. 850 is much wider than than 1900 but not all phones work with 850 such as the Atom. I personally don't have any problems with this. The phone works very well. Inside or out of buildings. But I must stress that 850 is no different from 1900 in that respect. I worked at Fido for 2 years. The ONLY factor that will determine the strength of your signal inside a building is the proximity of the antenna. Each antenna covers a radius of 'bout 1.5km. Both Fido and Rogers have different positioning for their antennas based on strategic trafic user reports. In other words, common places where people go have obviously better reception than... you know, like up north. If you're using Rogers, regardless to which phone you may have. If your phone does not have 850 it'll automatically switch to 1900. And since Rogers/Fido are basically the same company now, you'll benefit from Fido's coverage if Rogers' 1900 fails to do the job. I can tell you that I've been with Fido for the past 5 years and I am a very happy user. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have to much trouble in that respect. But again, it's really the positioning of the antennas that will make a difference at the end.
My suggestion: If you're with Rogers. Try to get a phone that is tri-band but without the 850 and check the signal strength inside buildings you go most frenqently. Look at the signal bar and it'll be the best indicator as how strong your signal will be on the Atom. If you're still not convinced with Rogers, buy a phone with Fido that only has triband without the 850 (since Rogers bought Fido, Fido is selling a lot more phones with 850 than they did a year ago.) and make the same test. Don't worry, Fido has a 15day money back policy. So, you can return the phone at any given moment without penalty. Make sure you buy the phone and activate it on prepaid though. They won't even charge you for used airtime on prepaid, it's a flaw in their system.
Believe me, I understand your concern because once you buy the Atom, it is pretty much yours because the companies who sell it đon't have much of a return policy. So, I would strongly suggest you follow my advice and test it out with another phone before you jump to conclusion. Good luck pal!
Happy Atom User,
Will

Hi Tom, had drop u some queries on wormholecreations.com. Thanks for the offer to PM u. Really need some advice from an IT professsional.
To answer that someone about the 2MP camera, SE sure has a much better quality picture than O2 Atom.
Not to mention the stereo. O2 earphones seem to have it designed with some giants with big ear holes in mind. Had ask O2 if they have a better earphones. Am willing to pay to get it change as the original is giving me headaches if I have it on for too long.

Hi Will and anyone else from Canada- I am a fellow Canadian and would like to hear about your experience using a triband phone (900/1800/1900) in Canada which only has the 850/1900 band. How is the reception inside buildings and outside major cities?

Hi tom, sorry to hear you had bad experience with the Atom. I have soft reset the Atom at least 50 times so far (mostly to clear everything out to make a clean boot) and knock on wood, I have never had it lost any contact information even ONCE. I notice a very strange behavior of all Windows Moble based devices, you MUST synchronize it with Activesync once in a while. I sync my phone at least 10 times a day and have absolutely no problems whatsoever. Do you ever sync you r phone??
