As previously mentioned, I occasionally find I am unable to make a call with the Mini S - the phone app fails to start from the Start Menu or by pressing the phone button on the front. You can still call from your contacts list. A soft reset is required to get it working again. I have found I can make the phone app stop working by going into Task Manager and clicking on the row just below the last task. You are able to select this row and end the task. Then the phone app stops working. It is possible that those you have found the phone app failing to start have been overkeen to close down apps from Task Manager - either this or the 'invisible' app is closing itself down under certain conditions. I'll see if my phone app continues to work now I have discovered this.

      To James,

Do this. Explore to Windows-mobile solutions-o2activeui and rename the 2 files starting with "o2"... Then browse to Windows-startup and take out what you see as anything to do with o2. If you dont do the latter step you will receive an error when starting up from cold. But this error is not a fatal one.

Also, i have had the infamous Active Sync disaster error... Something like error code 850100141 where your sync with Outlook just doesnt work. After researching real deep i found the only way to fix is to re-install Outlook...YES REINSTALL! Delete all sync relationships and start again. It was fine after that. I was actually scared that i have to do a hard reset! but phew... :)

After a week i am finding the device cool, functions are fine. But i do maintain that it is on the slow side, but not bad considering it only has a 200mhz processor. Still HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Good start with the mini S. Excellent device - a pda that's small enough to pass as a phone. The screen is satisfyingly big enough for my needs. While the slideout keyboard is cool I find I'm using the onscreen keyboard mostly. I've seen a criticism that it can drop it's Wi-fi connection but I've been connected all weekend at home without any drops. So far so good. But I have found the same problem as others where the phone software won't start after a while. You can still call from your contacts list but you are prevented from doing things like viewing who called you on a missed call. I've taken 'O2 Active' out of my startup (File Explorer, open directory Windows/StartUp, cut O2 active and paste in a different directory in case you need it back) and so far the phone software is still working after using the mini s for much of the day today. Will report back if this is a solution.

I have heard that by removing the O2 components from XDA Mini the device will improve noticably and becomes more stable. Can anybody tell me how can I get rid of the O2 components on my phone.

          Thanks in advance.

What's the ROM latest update for the Mini S? Searched the O2 Website and the only driver update appeared to be the original? Could anyone let me know where the latest driver can be found; as mentioned in the last post regarding the Bluetooth. Thanks

I have had this phone since just before xmas. I am very happy with it as it does everything I wanted from it.

It runs tomtom with the Bluetooth GPS seemlessly. It needed the latest update to make it reliable.

Skype does not work very well, although that I think is because the latest version of skype is old, and written before windows mobile 2005. It does actually make the phone unreliable and crash. Would suggest ppl remove until an updated version is available.

I too have also removed the o2 startup options using file manager and going to the startup folder.

ohhh... and the processor. It is a little slow, but not much. its a Texas Instruments so run a different instruction set. you cannot compare the speed again an intel as they are not the same. Its a bit like comparing an Intel vs AMD on Mhz.

                        hi,
I recently purchased an XDA 9100 from ebay. Unfortunately it is in German. Can some one tell me how I can get an English version of windows. Please mail me to bijesh_75@yahoo.com

                          Hi London D,

I'd also be interested in getting rid of some/all of the O2 3rd party stuff. How did you do it? Or do u have a link? It's just that it's quite slow, so any speed increase would be a lot better :)

But so far so good :)

                          Many thanks,

Had this phone for 2 days now... Yes it was prone to crashes, but after removing the O2 components the device have improved 2 folds in terms of performance and stability. Alot of the problem stems from the 3rd crap the o2 throws into it, by removing it and using the phone as it is (i.e i-mate K-JAM) it is actually very sweet.

Only thing is, cant quite get SKYPE to run smoothly enough. Shame.

Overall, a very good phone for the size. Windows v.5 is fine too.

Take note that the Microsoft Windows mobile suite SUX real bad… I had the HP 6315 that ran version 3.0 and I had to reset the device 2-3 times a day because it would freeze, the OS platform that Microsoft uses is very unreliable. It sounds like this is a reoccurring issue with all devices. Don't use this device or any that runs the Windows Mobile suite unless you are willing to backup your data everyday and are ok with the fact that you could lose all your data at any given time. On multiple occasions I had my device crash (back to the original welcome screen- everything is gone on the phone) and had to reinstall all my software which takes 45minutes at least to put everything back on... beware when using Windows mobile.

                                  More experience with the phone:

Get this one if you want a PDA, if you call a lot you're gonna get annoyed with the phone application (yes "Phone" is an app). Slow and sometimes doesn't work (hence you can't call. Reboot).

Reminds me of Windows 9x -- where we're all voluntary beta testers. All the features look cool and kind of work but kind of don't.

On the good side, ActiveSync is simple and just works, S60 still has long way to go.

Conclusion, far from perfect, but it's the best we've got. It's down to about 49.99 on O2 web site now (18/01/06).

I have had this phone for less than a week.
I am about to return it.
                                    It is slow
                                    It is sluggish
The processor is too weak to run the OS
It will run the lowest cpu speed skype (even though it technically shouldnt), but the connection delay over wifi is unusable.
After 2 or 3 days of owning it, the slide keyboard doesnt lock under very well at all. If you don't use the case provided it comes open in your pocket.
                                    The software is buggy.
It wont sync with windows 2000.
For some stupid reason M$ have decided to make apps not close when you close them. (kinda like they got the idea from Mac and M$'d it) so you will use task manager more than any other program to cancel/quit out of all your applications.
After you miss a call, you have to reboot the OS to make the phone keypad application work.
The buttons are clumsy on the phone body and the soft keys on the slide out keyboard are tiny and easy to miss.
i have been told by people who i am calling that i sound like im calling from inside a bucket.

The only good point is the camera. The camera is good. however the flash doesnt work very well.

This phone promises to offer so much, but in my opinion misses each item by a small to medium amount.

with regards Yuting's post about bad points:
I also find the lack of some form of window/program switching feature a let down, as even Nokias series 60 smartphones have this and it was a godsend to access programs running in the background so easily
as for the keyboard not 'waking' the phone, when u manually slide the keyboard out, its within the first half millimetre of movement that the xda detects u have moved the keyboard, so when it is in standby, it would be possible to accidentally 'wake it up' whilst it is in your pocket/bag etc.
also, I got mine and had to return it as the phone application ceased to work after any connection to internet, unless i rebooted everytime, and i'm so far yet to receive the handset back, all the little flaws unfortunately maybe enough for me to go back to Nokia's series 60 or communicator, which is a shame, cos i liked the idea, maybe the Atom will be better when it is released in UK

Regarding the O2 XDA mini S, I got the German version as well. This includes the manual in German. I don't know but I've got an English version in pdf format about 5MB or so downloaded from the internet but I forgot the address. But still I kept the copy of the pdf format in my hard drive.
