Sony Ericsson W950 review: Let the music play

16 October 2006
The Sony Ericsson W950 is an exciting new addition to the Walkman series of Sony Ericsson. It is a smartphone based on the Symbian 9.1 UIQ 3.0 with a stylish and yet classical design. Although it doesn’t feature a camera, the 4GB of free space and the dedicated multimedia keys would make any music lover jump from joy. The large touchscreen TFT display with QVGA resolution is just another fascinating feature for the tech buffs.

I think this handset is wonderful, it is a step forward to the w810i and the new w850i as this is based purly on music and phone, which i think will benefit it and also be the phones downfall...it doesnt require a camera but i think that as it doesnt this may put people off...but definetly not me...

    @iA@X
May I ask, have you tried this W950 and compared it with N91? Because I think W950 is not in the markt. And you must use it by yourself so you can say that the battery life from W950 is worser and also about the sound quality.
Even I still believe for sound quality is individually taste, so what I say good, sometimes not good according to other friends.

Or maybe you one from the tester for new phone?

I hope that you don't mind to answer my question; so I am not confuse anymore.

Yes W950 is smaller than the N91. It also lacks half of the features! What goes for music quality, N91 is superior.

And di u even bother reading the review? Music features of w950 are unparalleled..

No it doesn't have a 3.5mm jack.. only a gay adaptor. Battery life isn't any better than with the N91. Doesn't have wifi or even camera. Sound quality worse than N91. It's very basic phone, but I reckon it's cool if you're only after a music player. Still N91 is much better choice.

Please can people read the review. This phone does have the 3.5mm jack. It will have much better sound quality than the N91 as well. How can they be compared anyway? Has any1 actually held or used the N91. Its massive. Who cares if it has wifi, and only a 2mp camera?? Sony proved they are market leaders when they released the K800i. I think it kills the N73 and N80 although not a smartphone. Nokia users need to realise that Nokia were once the leading manufacturers but they've been overtaken. Sony consider size and battery in all their phones and the W950 is the best yet!

I'm definately going to get this. I already use a K800i and Samsung D900. Next in my pocket I want to carry a W950 and either the Nokia N95 or whatever Sony release to knock Nokia off again!!!

All s60 3rd edition phones support ogg and flac if you install the codecs..

What I don't like is the lack of different codec support.
NO music phone until now has given support to FLAC or OGG.
I have all my CDs ripped in Flac and would run to buy a 950 if it had support for it.

All hard drives are delicate. It's a fact.

Battery life is better on the W950, especially on flight mode wher it can pack 30 hours.

CORRECTION. the n91 have the 3.5mm BUILT IN and it comes with a 3.5mm remote control too. YES, BOTH.

Nice phone! Yet I´m a bit disappointed with the browser and other functions. Music player seems very nice. I like the visualizations - cool!

But anyway, my next phone would have been this or the N73 ME. Think I´m going to go for the Nokia. Mostly for the camera and functions.

"Also, this is 4GB flash memory. Not that delicate micro hard drive which is easily broken, but solid state flash memory which also consumes far less battery life."

Yet the playback time is shorter than in the N91. BTW I haven't heard of a single N91 with a broken hdd..

Well, i never saw the N91 to pose any threat to the W950 simply becoz the latter has the Walkman TM - you'll be assured of its audio quality.

I feel that this is for those who wants to upgrade from say an iPod mini or Zen Micro, yet wants a phone with decent features(excl. camera).

The Symbian aspect of this phone opens it up to a world of infinite possibilities, unlike the other non-smartphones. Coupled it with 4GB FLASH mem. and a decent Walkman player, all it needs is good pricing targetted at the middle - not HIGH range segment - of the market.

Well it does have a 3.5mm jack, it's just that it's located on the headset, which means that you can also use your own pair of heaphones as a handsfree as well as normal headphones. On an N91 you wouldn't be able to do that.
Also, this is 4GB flash memory. Not that delicate micro hard drive which is easily broken, but solid state flash memory which also consumes far less battery life.
Know the facts before making such niave comments.

yeah thats one of the w950 disadvantages it doesn't have a built in 3.5mm even begin sony ericsson top music solution. late release, the nokia have 8gb now. and better audio quality, so seens like sony ericsson lost this battle.

Rather lame in comparison to the N91. I wonder how the audio quality is? I mean is it even close to the N91. Doesn't have a built in 3.5mm jack, HOW LAME IS THAT!
