Sony Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium hands-on: Sony at IFA 2015

02 September, 2015
Sony’s back, and it returns with aplomb. The company has brought us an entire Xperia Z5 family of smartphones ranging from the Xperia Z5 Compact for small pockets to the 5.5-inch Xperia Z5 Premium with the industry’s first 4K display in a production smartphone.

I want that SBH54 headset. But likely it will be priced too high.
And I dont get why it has BT 3.0, when there is a more efficient protocol, with bluetooth 4.0.

    I had the MW600.
But it was most likely water damaged. This one has some weather-proofing.
And I would at least like to be able to call back contacts from the call log, without picking up my phone, and I think this one supports that.
    And noise canceling, is nice.
Built in vibration is very nice, and usefull.

      What's innovative about this phone?

Totally agree with the criticism of the "Premium" moniker (these are flagship phones, is Sony telling me the other flagships aren't premium enough? -- bad move!)

I am really curious to see is how soon will this phones be supported by the AOSP project and (most importantly) how well will the new camera features work under AOSP (which is to me the strongest selling point).

SD810 makes me worry, but I'll wait and see if something magic happens when the first retail units get down to real users hands.

The downgrade to 2GB of RAM in the compact was uncalled for... Using the same reasoning that went into fitting a 4K display in the Premium, the Compact could have had a 1080p display. -- None of this will matter at all if the Compact battery life proves to be something memorable.

I am not a fan of the looks of the new power button, but let's wait and see if the added functionality makes up for the loss in visuals (the round metal one was something that separated the Xperias from the crowd).

        All-and-all looking forward!

I would have called Xperia Z5 Premium, a premium only if it had a 3600 mah battery, 2K display (NOT 4K), above 750 nits brightness, a 23 MP cam with OIS and a 64 GB base model with 128 GB upper range model. Then I would gladly pay a 1000$ for that piece of gold. As of now, it is just another Xperia Z5 UL ( unnecessarily large). Sigh!

mmj321, 02 Sep 2015only ois & xenon flash missing otherwise would've been... morewell, even led can be bright if its new tech and ois is here not important since there is no protruding, iso12000, and 0.03sec focus. 99% of photos taken is focused on taking shots in day while moving. Also they mention less noise so low light.

Well Sony is back in business, after a long time, they gathered such an immense response from all around. I always admire sony for their design and now this Chrome finish is simply the best. Good Job Sony.

Someone please explain why the hell Sony launched and wasted their resources on Z3+ when they had already planned Xperia Z5?? And same goes for the launch of Xperia Z5. Also, the whole world was shouting out so loud against this epic failure called Snapdragon 810 and still they went with it. What makes it worse is the fact that despite the utter battery killer that Snapdragon 810 was on Z3+, they even shrank the battery in Z5 to 2900 mah despite making it thicker. Seriously, all this doesn't make any sense to me. and then these stupid arrogant and ignorant so called Global Brands complain of lack of consumers' loyalty? Really Sony? that's the best you could come up with?

The best decision Sony took is not to make the screen of Xperia Z5 Compact FullHD.
There is no sense in putting a Full HD screen in a sub 5 inch phone. Also Sony screens have high brightness and great contrast so a HD screen was the correct way to go. Also it has great pixel density.

                                  GOOD JOB SONY

that was not the "wow", but sony promised something more nxt year.. maybe they will remove that huge bazels on the top and botton.. would be nice..
and probably will be cool to use the premium one as vr glasses in their project morpheus, or drones.

For those who don't know, All the 3 phones have LPDDR4 RAM as in the OnePlus or Galaxy Edge.

The Compact also has a DDR4 Ram so it is obviously faster than the previous one and 1080p is already too much for a 5 inch screen.

                                      Its a Win-Win

Great to see that Sony has humped again to the phablet
market. Interesting to see how much the Z5 premium will cost.
In my opinion, shame that the Z5 Has still a 5.2 inch screen and not 5.5
I think they should have built the Z5 with 5.5 inch screen, and the premium
                                        with 6 inch.
