Sony Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium hands-on: Sony at IFA 2015

02 September, 2015
Sony’s back, and it returns with aplomb. The company has brought us an entire Xperia Z5 family of smartphones ranging from the Xperia Z5 Compact for small pockets to the 5.5-inch Xperia Z5 Premium with the industry’s first 4K display in a production smartphone.

SDKforLumia, 02 Sep 2015I would have called Xperia Z5 Premium, a premium only if it... morei don't see how 2k is more premium than 4k

currently the only thing amiss about this is lack of any certified glass protection..like corning or saphire, whats the use of spending 800 to 1000$ on this if it cracks when a belt buckle falls on it from a height of 20cm??......obviously snapdragon 810 had to be used since sony doesnt have a custom chip like exynos...the premium could have gone with 4gb of ram(just to show off of course)..the volume rocker is positioned like that to aid in zoomin i believe....btw does any of these have wireless charging??

Definitely excited for the Z5 compact or simply the Zx compact series. Getting much better with every iteration.
I will still wait for the next iteration though since 820 & Android M will be released soon.
It's a combo for increased battery life/efficiency... well, theoretically, but definitely hard to be ignored.
I do hope that they at least maintain that 2700mAH battery capacity.

BTW, why is it small for an Android to have 4.6" screen when millions are going through their FB, Twitter, browser and all on a 4.7" iPhone 6. Not to mention that I can still see a LOT
of people with their eyes glued to their 4" iPhone 5/s.

Battery life & single-handed-size is still #1. Be practical, don't be a slave to tech.
I'm still with my Xperia S; though rooted with CM, and definitely not because I can't afford a new phone, but more coz I yearn the good old days of 1+ week battery life (Nokia/Sony Ericsson) .
Z3 Compact already managed a 4d or 101h endurance rating. I can see that 5d endurance rating is seriously possible with future compact.... and yes, I'm a light user.

SDKforLumia, 02 Sep 2015Someone please explain why the hell Sony launched and waste... moreplease be guided. the heating issue has already been addressed. even in the z3+, the heating was already managed. btekt even posted a video wherein the z3+ took a 4k video longer than an s6 did.

also, btekt posted a video showing that the z5 can take 4k videos for 10 minutes without heating up and dying.

I think Sony has learned the hard way and actually reworked the new camera sensor to deliver exceptional results, Ive a good feeling these phones are going to steal the camera throne. About time I say, Nokia & Sony used to deliver on brilliant cameras.

AnonD-99280, 03 Sep 2015lol agreed! this z5 compact is even smaller than z1 com... moreThe writer of this preview does not seem to be a fan of the compact. He said that people are not going to use it for surf, cause the display is too small.
If there is one reason you wont see this as often in peoples hands, is that more people can fit it in their pockets, thus does not have to come up with things to do with it, while holding it, since they either have no where to put it, or thinks its too much of a hustle to take it out of and put it back in the bag all the time.

Too bad they couldn't slim down the side bezels, however, it feels a bit too wide for it's display size.

See that Samsung, the Z5P is dust proof and water resistant, has FM radio, bigger battery AND SD card... I'm think that a 4K screen is stupidity but if battery life is as good as my GN4 it might be my next phone.

Oh, that placement of the Volume rocker. Really makes no sense.
Even on my Z3, it's below my grip when talking.
And if I would use it for digital zoom in the camera, well, then I would have to move my finger from the shutter key.
                                  So why place it there?

To me, the outer frame of the Compact looks really plastic. But that could just be the images.

But if it looks plastic in real life. And it lacks bumpers on the corners.

Well, are you (gsmarena) sure, they did not refer to an inner aluminium frame?

ois, 02 Sep 2015it has OIS according to pocket lintIn the description in this article, it has OIS for video.
Moving the optics is one type of OIS. Moving the sensor is the other. A rare few cases they are combined.

Perhaps the OIS is somehow constructed so it can't make use of the full sensor, and they then decided not to implement it for stills, since it cuts the field of view and the resolution. But I would prefer having a mode with a narrower field of view and lower resolution, if that meant I could take advantage of a built in OIS.
