Apple iPhone 6s Plus vs. Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+: Double positive

15 October, 2015
3D Touch or curved Edge screen? Metal or glass? LCD or AMOLED? iOS or Android? Speed and silky-smooth response or heavy-duty multitasking? These are the questions and no one’s got better answers than you. And if the answers consistently put you on this or that side of the line, you know all there is to know.

Kyle K., 16 Oct 20151. I agree on the camera part, maybe we should pick an over... moreAll respect to the point Jumbo is making, but is GPS accuracy between modern smartphones something that can be measurably differentiated these days??

Haven't we reached a level of accuracy across the device spectrum as far as location positioning goes?

I can only speak for my personal experience in that I haven't noticed any accuracy issue's in any of the (15 or so) device's I have owned or used in the last 3 years, The last one I found to have an issue in this regard was the original Galaxy S (and was as far as I'm aware a known fault with that device)

Speed to acquire a position lock does I suppose vary across the board, but again I can't say I have ever noticed it to any significant degree.

Please correct me If I am wrong here.

One of the advantages of galaxy s6 edge+ over the iphone 6s plus is the smaller size with bigger screen (better screen to body ratio). I dont know why this is not mentioned in page 1 where it is highlighted the advantages of each phone

Jumbo, 16 Oct 2015Thanks Kyle. I do understand your processes, and of course ... more1. I agree on the camera part, maybe we should pick an overall winner for this chapter, after pointing out the winners in each camera category. I will think about this for the next VS.

                            2. Yes, you are right, this 3 out of 16 isn't the best description and is misleading. I wrote it this way to point out that the actual score is not important as stated by my next sentence - "Yet those three chapters make the iPhone the most powerful smartphone in the world to date, with excellent optical image stabilization and a great piece of novelty in the pressure-sensitive screen layer." But yes, I see why it can be misunderstood.

                            3. I agree on the GPS test and other things we stopped doing in the last two years and will take bring it up for consideration with the team.

Kyle K., 16 Oct 2015Hello, For the VERSUS articles we follow our review rout... moreThanks Kyle. I do understand your processes, and of course one can easily see the parts comparatively, irrespective of the actual awarded scoring divisions.

The review does however end with "Apple only wins 3 out of possible 16 categories", which does actually result in a "final score"-type conclusion, as it were. But 9 of these 16 categories were sound & camera-related. Important, yes; >50% of the phone, I disagree.

The point is, I don't think anyone is missing out on anything by getting --either-- of these. But for instance, by getting either of these, rather than say, a Z5, you would definitely sacrifice:
                              - waterproofing
                              - expandable storage
                              - extreme convenience in fingerprint reader

-> All of which would only count under 1 category by this calculation. Camera & Video may well be important, but they --all-- have very capable cameras, and take very satisfactory video. In cases where there is a particular feature that stands out head and shoulders above the other, and makes things considerably more convenient, then yes, it's worth awarding a score separately.

I showed this review to a colleague, who didn't read the whole article, but did come away with, "Wow, the S6 won 11-3!". Now, that's probably about the same score I would give as a comparison between the two as well, although mainly because I would award -10 to the 6S just for being Apple in the first place. ;)

Could it not work with design, hardware etc separated into, say, 3 or 4 categories, expansion another, and multimedia reduced to 3 or 4 ( Sound; Still Camera; Video) plus extra points for super-astounding features? Where people can calculate their own score based on whether those outstanding features are relevant to them or not?
Just eg of course, not saying you --should-- change anything, you know best with the layout you have to work with. I just feel that 9 scores out of 16 for multimedia is tooo over-representative, for today's devices which have --many-- more uses. How about a GPS-accuracy score as well, since sooo many services now are location-oriented..?

And last of all.. I would argue that design is --the-- most important factor for the iphone.. given that 97% of the reason for buying an iPhone is to be seen with it... It is, after all, usually the only information that --other-- people have to judge "your phone" on.. which obviously matters a great deal to a lot of people.... ;)

The iPhone 6S I now have, has only ever gotten warn once in the 9 days I've now have had it, and that was when I ran the GFXBench 3.1 test (it cooled quickly enough once the test was complete).

As for the touch ID sensor getting hot, well mine has never generated any heat I can feel what so ever, maybe some units have a technical issue of some sort, that's certainly possible.

The Z5 however got hot pretty much straight out of the box, and it stayed that way unless put down and left alone.

Jumbo, 16 Oct 2015Of course. Everyone can decide for themselves what matters... moreHello,

For the VERSUS articles we follow our review routine - this makes it easy for our readers to explore those kind of articles. The design chapter have always been just one in our reviews and we still think if we are comparing two devices there is just one score here. Sure, control placement and port placement and handling and beauty are all important, but in the end it would make it TLDR and eventually no one would read it.

On the other hand the camera functions have become a lot more comprehensive throughout the past few years and we must explore most important features - daylight, HDR, panorama, video, low-light.

My point is - if the design is SUPER important to you, and the camera is not - then just don't bother to read the camera part. And vise versa. The camera competition is fierce lately and we had to make sure our readers know everything.

As we did with the design - we gave you the two phones, pointed out the pros and cons, and eventually announced our pick. BUT! The design score is not lesser than the COMBINED camera one, as we don't actually make a final score. It's up to you to decide - you choose the important chapters, you decided where to put the most weight, etc.

None of the wins in those chapters is less or more important. They don't add up to a final score. They just follow a pattern we use for reviews and have one sole purpose - to give you all details, a touch of personal thoughts, and eventually help YOU decided which one is better.

I recently said this to a friend of mine: Buying only one of these (iPhone 6s Plus or Galaxy S6 edge+) is not choosing - it's sacrificing.

                                  Cheers!

My question is, why has GSMArena decided that trivially small dvisions within the camera are relevant, whereas other whole entire aspects are lumped together and considered extremely inconsequential by comparison? THe whole point of "scoring" is to equate one against the other, and that only works if each division has the same relative importance.
