iPhone 6s vs. Galaxy S6 vs. Xperia Z5: Monster Brawl

23 October, 2015
Some phones just can't be reviewed in a vacuum, the competition between them is so fierce – and their price tags so high – that they have to be compared against each other under a microscope to determine the best one for you. The Apple iPhone 6s and Samsung Galaxy S6 are joined by the Sony Xperia Z5 for this three-way fight.

If you want better clarity, you should choose 2K+amoled. not 4K. 4 K is useless for tiny device, because it doesn increase the clarity at all.

      But...
If you are planning to use your phone as a VR device, 4K (or even 8K if it exist) is the best solution.

When People compare 2K (LG G4) to 1080P (Iphone 6+) will say the 2k win, but while the 4k coming they say difference thing, such as battery life…can't see any difference…and promote Retina display is the best for viewing movie and text blabla…They just turn back to 1080P retina, it is funny! Why don't they turn back to 480p or 360p?

For information the 4K display is very smart, activated on movie and photo and the 3430 mah battery is biger than other and they have very well battery management system. They only lack of advertising to tell people how good it is, but received other competitors keep trolling again and again.

abc, 02 Nov 2015you again, slippery phone fan. 4k is pointless in tiny scr... moreWell first I would wonder why someone would choose 'Dual Heatpipes' as a nickname? It too to me at least suggests a certain degree of bias towards Sony.

Secondly, if you look at the questions this individual is asking you, then they are all dependant on you providing an answer based on one factor alone.....clarity.

The problem is clarity is one part of what goes into making a good display, one of many. It's an important part to be sure, just not the only one. we might as well say one car is better than another simply because it has more horsepower, or a camera with more megapixels is automatically better than one with fewer.

Upscaling is a rather poor way of approximating a higher resolution, I would argue that it doesn't justify the processing power (and the resulting hit to battery performance) to upscale anything to 4k on a 5.7inch screen. And that Sony are just chasing the hype that being first to market with a particular spec brings.

4k is pointless in tiny screen. because your eyes cant see the difference between 2K and 4K. But it is very very useful if you connect your phone to external monitor (or tv).

Anonymous, 02 Nov 2015I agree to a point. 720p on these phones still looks adequa... moreThe last two smartphones I have used for any considerable length of time are LG G4 for 3 months and the iPhone 6S (which I am still using), now that's going from a 5.5inch screen at 538ppi to a 4.7inch screen at 326ppi. And let me tell you I have yet to notice the difference.

I actually still had my G4 when I picked up the 6S as it took me a while to find a buyer for it, so I had them both up and running and side by side for comparison, and again, just couldn't see the huge difference these numbers suggest should be obvious, in fact I couldn't see much of a difference at all (in terms of clarity).

Now this is just my personal perspective, and I'll admit that had I brought the both phones up to point closer to my face, say a couple of inches or less, then yes I probably would've been able to see that the G4 is sharper.

But why would I do that??? I honestly don't know how people are using their phones these days, but at such close distances my eyes start to sting very quickly.

I think Apple would at this point be better served adjusting their marketing from trying to convince people that 326ppi represents the 'ultimate' in terms of resolution (they pretty much have admitted this isn't necessarily the case by going above this limit with the IPhone 6 & 6S Plus), and instead concentrating on marketing the Retina 326ppi limit as striking the best balance between clarity, battery efficiency and performance.

I for one would agree with that marketing angle, though again, I appreciate that this is just my personal take on things.

Heck even WVGA still looks ok. But people act like it's the end of the world if it's below 720p. Sometimes even if it is 720. Yet how long did 360/480p suffice on tv's?

However 1080p and especially QHD definitely look a lot nicer. And 4K might be a bit overkill now, but that's why it's scaling on the Z5 Premium. As well as means you can play 4K content native.
And the biggest benefit seems to be VR

I for one struggle to tell the difference, I've said it before, I have haven't had a problem with smartphone screens since they hit the 720p threshold. Now I don't have 'perfect' vision I'll grant you, and am willing to accept that some do perceive as you say a subtle difference at higher resolutions.

You make a good point though, it's marketing mainly that has pointed to the 300ppi limit, and that marketing belongs to Apple. They are not the only ones guilty of this though, LG tried the same thing when they debuted the G3 and its 2k screen, and now Sony are attempting to convince you all that 801ppi is something that is required.

But are they really? Do they bring the any perceivable benefit sufficiently enough to offset the impact they can have to battery life and performance???

These questions will get different answers from different people (and in my experience those answers will mostly be based on bias rather than actual perception) My answer would be no, you I'm guessing would be yes?

I do find it funny though that people endlessly attack and criticise Apple marketing and yet just accept it from everyone else.

The human eye CAN NOT see the difference between 4K and HD on a 5 inch screen so it's pointless.
Even so, you can only see them if you have a wireless connection, otherwise, your phone's plan will be gone. a 4 K video song has 2 GB-3 GB . It's just marketing and nothing more.
