Sony Ericsson K810 review: A Cyber-shot is reborn

14 March 2007
When it comes to cameraphones, the words K800 Cyber-shot always seem to come to mind. The time has come to finally forget it since the famous cameraphone has received a successor in the face of the spanking new Sony Ericsson K810. The same exciting 3.2 megapixel camera packed into a slimmer body and a brand new design.

    seVIIn:

I was honestly about to buy the K800 when I found out that the K810 became available, and now I'm stuck as to which one to buy... I went all out and got themes, ringtone makers, theme makers, and the PDF manual for the K800 (so that I'd be ready to "mod" it when I bought it), so Looked up the keylock deal. Just hold the * button down from the standby screen.

The one thing that is a turn off for me for both phones is the video quality... I was on the brink of buying a Samsung D900 or U600 because of their superior video quality (over the K800/810), but then I found out that their battery life is around 1.5 days on normal usage.

Well, at least I have till October when my contract ends (if need be) to figure out which phone to buy, and hopefully the K810 will come down in price a bit by then.

Jeebus: I bought it from Simstar at Crystal Mall in Burnaby. I think it was around the same price plus tax (no contract).
Seems like them and Cellworldco are the spots in Van.

4 days in and i've been putting it through it's paces. I really, really like this phone.

      cons
-you can't return to the phone from screensaver/time just by hitting the joystick, i was used to that on my old T610
-the screen gets pretty marked up with fingerprints quite easily, you can rub all you want but you'll never be done cleaning
-video quality isn't so hot, not even close
-isn't there a screen/keypad lock btw? what the heck is it?

      pros
-beautiful screen and phone design, i couldn't bring myself to liking the size of the K800 even though it was much cheaper, it's mostly the camera cover that bothered me
-fantastic reception, the voice quality is bassy actually
-quick navigation through the menu, keys are easy to use too

seVIIn: Which store did you buy it from, and how much? I'm thinking of getting this, but cellworldco.com is selling it for $519, probably with $140 off if I sign up on a 3yr deal... Still a little steep for me, and I'm always lookin' for a good deal.

Just bought it from a store in Vancouver yesterday afternoon, so it's been charging for over 12 hours overnight.
Put in a sim card this morning. Not all my contacts transferred over unfortunately. Prob due to the old sim card i have.
A couple things i noticed. The ringtone is a little quiet, i'll try some midi's later but my last phone, T610 seems louder.
The battery cover creaks which bugged me but i was able to fix it by folding a standard yellow sticky twice and inserting it between the battery and the battery cover. I'll try to post more thoughts over the next week.

why do they still use a joystick?
i used to have SE's but the joysticks are dustcollectors and after a few moths they dont't work like they used to.

hi friends, when we check the photo samples of SE K790 and SE K810 in www.GSMARENA.com, i feel K790 is much better than K810,

                      no improvements in new one,
hope for the best in final release.

Guys out there seems to be blind thatf 5mp images produced by a phone has excellent quality over the lower resolution ones. 5mp pictures by a phone has nothing to win over a 4mp images produced by a digital camera with a CCD sensor. instead of relying on the megapixels what if you people take an eye to the more important aspects like ISO sensitivity,Aperture and shutter priority and the sensor size and type the camera uses. i would bet that if SE would produce 4mp phone using a CCD sensor, manual mode calibrator and better ISO sensitivity then any phone out there even sporting 8 megapixel without those features won't won over that SE. megapixels don't improve image quality that much instead it just make more details for better viewing but if the sensor or any component is poor that multimegapixel camera won't make good.

yes it can work on a 2G only GSM network, don't worry

the buttons are actually not as bad as they seem, I find them acceptable

and the design is starting to grow on me, for some weird reason, I thought it was really ugly, too when it was first announced.

the keys are not rubber-plated, so there'll be nothing to scratch off, the much thinner body and improved camera lens protector are all pluses

also note that the phone runs faster than the K800i

Can a 3G phone (k810) work in a GSM frequence?; I really don't know, so I would be very glad if somebody answers my question. Thank you.

                                      They said......
"Our final verdict is that given the serious design flaws and the lack of serious upgrades, you should stay with the Sony Ericsson K800 until a better cameraphone comes up on the market."

and so i will until SE up the video capabilities
throw in minimum 1GB memory and the MP camera is at least 5MP.

I have seen so many SE variations of the other models that it was anticipated that soon enough the K800i would get its sibling and so it has but unfortunatly it is not next generation or including the above "my phone wish list specification"
