Xiaomi Mi 5 review: Form and function

16 March, 2016
It's been a while since we met the last of the Mi kind. Even though the Xiaomi Mi 4 went on sale back in the summer of 2014, it succeeded in staying relevant for over 20 months and surpassed the lifespan of many competitors. Xiaomi surely took the time to make the Mi 5 worthy of its name. And Xiaomi Mi 5 sets the bar even higher!

Overall Better than x performance with lower price

s7 stupid price tag, 17 Mar 2016WOW!!!.....same S820 chipset with half than S7 price... ... moreJust wait a few months for the price to drop. But even so, i bought my note 4 right when the price was steep and i had no regrets. Neither would majority who would invest in the s7/s7 edge simply because they're worth it.

Mi 5's performance makes it almost tempting to get it but then I am reminded of the size. ~5.15" is not big enough to be a media device, yeah I said it!, it is large enough to be an IM, VoIP and cellular calling device. Need atleast 5.5" to be worth investing so much for media consumption device, preferably 6".

The North American market is a lousy self entitled bunch of whiners, it's mostly them who complain about large sized phones and these companies always cater to North American needs because they are apparently the 'major consumers'. I find that deceptive at best because other statistics show otherwise, like say Asian market is way larger than the north american market. When the larger phones do come out they are packed with not so big batteries, lesser quality/capability components and they don't have the leading SOC in them.

We got the S7 Edge this year but it is just too damn pricey.

This phone has a very BIG problem. Just try to listen how it records sound... I would never buy this phone... With this problem, this phone not worth even 100$...

Anyone notice even though people say sensor size>megapixels, when tested the top range it's not always true. Higher megapixels seem to capture better detail.

Not that the Redmi Note 3 really needs it as its minimum brightness level.

are you reviewing redmi note 3 or telling the mediatek one. i want to choose between redmi note 3 sd vs mi5. i want premium look and feel. which color will be better ?

Xiaomi did a terrific job optimizing the software on top of marshmallow. 92 hours? That's perfect, much better than by the S7's 80. The camera software always have been a trouble of the past, but shaky videos are no more...a phone like this really needs to come to the West.

It's measured by IO and Ram bandwidth.

Relatively slow flash and typical bandwidth makes this phone slower than its comparisons. Also only 3GB of RAM on a ram heavy OS like MIUI ensures many redraws, making the phone even slower.

For 2016 Standards this phone is not fast. You can probably find 4GB phones running AOSP from unknown chinese brands that will probably be faster (AOSP = little overheard, more memory = more ram caching). A very expensive phone, given how little it offers.
