Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition review: Cute clumsy penguin

14 June 2016
The Meizu PRO 5 might be almost a year old now, but it is still a gorgeous and exquisite flagship device. The only real question is, could Meizu have possibly made it better by ditching the tried and true Android and by taking a shot on Ubuntu - a rarity on the smartphone scene to say the least. But, we won't dive into that quite yet.

After reading this article I dusted off my Nexus 4 running Ubuntu Touch and gave it a spin. A few minutes after startup, I received notice of new Ubuntu version OTA-11 ready for download. Now running Ubuntu 15.04 speedy enough for the way I use a phone. Some apps don't snap right up, but few take more than a few seconds to load. Note that Nexus 4 is one of only two devices with Canonical support, so perhaps a poor implementation of Ubuntu on the Pro 5 is giving both hardware and software a bad name?

The gist of my message is that, don't discredit a thing of what is concerned. I look both ways and carefully laid all what is good and not in a fair manner. But not as far as over-crediting like what you claimed. There was no one big before the pioneering of Android and iOS.

If I am corrected, I welcome it with open arms. If I don't know something, I do research and I ask sensibly. If I have to argue, I do it in a reasonable and logical method.

PS: I clicked on your username only to find out you got a hobby of bashing anything and anyone when you see fit. You have an issue.

Of course they would get many things right at the start since they have the examples right before them. It seems you're giving ubuntu too much credit when you don't even know what you're talking about!

We don't need more mobile OS.
For PC, there's windows for gamers, enterprise, and general consumer.
                  Mac for content makers.
                  Linux for engineers and servers.
For mobile, there's android for just everyone and iOS who wants simplicity (forget windows mobile).
Ubuntu mobile is not going to work.. They have no markets except for antusiasts, who probably already had androids and iPhones..

Hotkolbas, 15 Jun 2016Samsung released a media dock for the note 2 it has USB inp... moreCloud is useless in real work, its good for documents and smaller files, but try to be synced 24h with more than 50GB of data, and you cant wait damn 30min to download part of it, or sit in office or home waiting for synchronization of project that take 5GB. its impossible to be always in range of fast internet(or paying for unlimited 4G that cost fortune in some places). Im not even gonna mention power/resource consumption of cloud syncing that phone need to use.

Its the same situation like I always say that Android technically is still in the same level as old symbian, beside better fancy look and speed, it give you the same limitations and possibilities, so no matter how much you would try it cant replace anything more than media consuming devices. And everytime when I say that. someone say that Im wrong and there are loots of apps for more advanced work... and every time when I ask for them, they give me some apps for working on text or some basic and limited apps for graphic or music... Sorry I had such stuff even on java based phones back in 2006.

For example I work in car workshop and I have few mobile apps for diagnostic, but usability of them for work is below 0, and you have no idea how much time and money I could save if I could just use my phone that I have always with me.
Or something more "basic" work, like taxes and maintaining your company. its impossible to keep your business to work using only phone... and again, you have no idea how much time and money I could save if I could use only my phone.

Of course its not because of Android it self, but app developers that after all those years still focus on some dumb media consuming apps, and its also fault of users, because you(overall), instead of demanding more advanced apps, you still prefer some social/media apps to send phalus images to your gf or emoijs for friends...

So instead of advancing and expand usability of our powerful devices... we still use them as a toys.

Akinaro, 15 Jun 2016I had always huge hopes in such systems(proper OS on mobile... moreMany developers see the Ubuntu Touch OS as an eventual failure because of the development itself of this Linux variant:

                      1. Not well-established, lack of standardization.

                      2. Documentation (critical).

                      3. The OS pathway for upgrades which should have at least a 'roadmap'.

                      4. A wandering, undocumented OS upgrade is seen as 'unstable'.

                      5. A catalyst for distributing apps (an app store).

There are few things that I surely have missed and it will cost a long post to sweat on the details but the ones I mentioned are the common cause (in general) why a greenhorn OS could not make it to the mainstream. Thank you.

Microsoft wants to out there version of cross platforming but again fails to meet expectation because software is not cross compatible ala Microsoft's first version of the surface tablet the arm version.
The main sticking point is why would you have just a monitor and keyboard and mouse when add a PC and you don't need your mobile device, with cross synchronization with a cloud based system you can have all docs, files, folders, pics etc on all devices.

So I guess they'll be having their own App store...

I had always huge hopes in such systems(proper OS on mobile device)
But Canonical made huge mistake trying to put ubuntu in new dress, instead of modifying proper ubuntu to fit mobile.
They thought they could invent new wheel, and they failed obviously.

Instead of playing with useless new interface, all they should make is normal launcher, few basic phone apps, and all rest should be... used just like on PC.
                            Why?
Because such device should work with external input and screen. All you need to to is plug mouse+monitor or TV... and you have proper PC in phone case.
You can then work with all advanced apps!
And what about mobile apps? Lets be honest, 90% of time when we use phone in the field, we use browser/social apps and camera, all gaming and other apps we use in home or place where we have TV or monitor near, and then we can use all apps we want with 100% of productivity.
All work we would do would be on our phone, and mobile apps would be used just to browse, when all proper work would be made when plugged to tv/monitor.

I actually tried such system when I installed linux on my android device using one of virtual machines, I used gimp, proper text editors and even few apps made for CAD editors.
Using just small TV-cable and Bluetooth mouse. If it would be proper OS, not just app for launching VM it would be even better, because files and cooperation between mobile app-proper app, would be even easier and faster.

Well what do we have here :) A smartphone with a different world of system inside of it.

But keep in mind, dear commenters, that this Ubuntu Touch here is not to be compared with the likes of Android, iOS or Windows. Rather, its unfair to compare. If you wanted to (of course you will), then compare Ubuntu Touch with the very first version of Android (which was a mess) or iOS (which was a bigger mess). Ubuntu Touch is in its early stage which is why even the interface feels lacking or incomplete, aside from features, refinements and overall package.

Even so, it is stable. That stability which took years for Android and iOS to achieve, yet seems to stagger on low-end processors. Just imagine the gap if you compare all of them stages-for-stages, pound-for-pound as they say.

The Ubuntu Touch needs tremendous time and support to realise its full bloom. Who knows.
