Our camera shootout: iPhone 7 vs. Galaxy S7 vs. Xperia XZ vs. LG G5

17 October 2016
Team Fall in the red corner versus Team Spring in the blue. Okay, not really - it's actually every phone for itself, but the newly-launched contenders from Sony and Apple take on the established players from Samsung and LG that have been around for some six months.

have you seen in your last panorama with Galaxy S7, there is a car which is about 100m long :-)
something like a long long limo
it seems the galaxy S7 movement and the car movement are the same.

GSMARENA test feels like camera with more detail and less noise = win. Excellent exposure and contrast and white balance is not important at all. Btw, who look at their picture with 100% crop?

                  HDR - winner: G5

It's actually a semi-low light HDR scene. It's not a real HDR test, because it is not a bright daylight scene with shadows, where the HDR is the most necessary.

Anyway, in this semi-low light HDR scene, the S7 has slightly more detail in non-HDR mode.
But if you compare the HDR ON photos, you can see that G5's photo is better, more detailed. It's more obvious if you downscale the G5's photo to match the S7's size.

LOW LIGHT - winner: S7, but not by much

If you downscale the G5's photo to the same size as S7's, you will see that the difference between G5 and S7 in low light is minimal. Also, G5 used a slightly higher iso or exposure, thus it's photo is brighter and has a little less detail than S7. I would like to see a comparison at the same manual settings, same exosure. The result might would be different. (Wait... Samsung doesn't have a real manual mode. LG does.)

Why this article doesn't mention the fact that makes LG phones even better: the full featured manual mode.

But then again, i have never said That 950/950XL came is best. The best mobile camera sits still on 808. But it's better than mentioned bunch tho, especially if we take into account that S7 camera is actually worse than S6 camera was. As long as camera can't capture natural colours, it's not a camera but painting machine. I would continue, but RL is calling with voice of my GF. Take care!

Anonymous, 20 Oct 2016Pureview is rightfully praised. I still have my Nokia 808 ... moreYou got oneplus3 alternative - squeezed level of detail and noiseless capture is superb. Almost wish they would use new sony xz sensor. I wish there was comparison of its 4K here, I cannot find anything better.

wow that was unexpected..the way the article started, and the current trend in gsma, i thought s7 would have gotten really bad reviews..but that sensor came through huh??
as far i know all the phones have reached a level of quality that is matching and sometimes rivaling point and shoot cameras.its obviously a matter of personal choice now...
this also gives a few pointers...higher megapixels doesnt always give better results...and xperias have a hit andmiss type of photography..i have used a z1..the outdoor cam looks awesome..but when you pixel peep its full of noise..i think its partly because of the compression algorithms...otherwise a 21mp cam will output huge 30-50mb photos..not very memory friendly...i own an s7 edge now..i was frustrated with the pic quality..then i found out i had hdr on all the time..its off now and i'm very happy..i don't own the g5 but my brother has the g4..its a good camera phone, though it had other issues..the removable battery on the g5 is not very appealing(the way its implemented)...as for iphone..i hope the quality is not that of the ipad pro..

on another note gsma please add dslr or atleast a respectable point and shoot to compare the pics with..

I still have my Nokia 808 and the 5 and 8mp Pureview images are the closest to DSLR level or quality at pixel level that I've seen in any smartphone camera.

It's sad that Nokia doesn't make phones anymore and doesn't invest in mobile sensors.
The Lumia 950 is still very capable, it shoots 8mp pureview photos and that gives the camera an advantage in difficult lighting situations.
The thing is the Lumia 950 was already almost a year late when it was launched so basically Nokias older tech can still keep up with the bleeding edge today. Who knows if we'll ever see a phone with Nokia camera tech that is ahead of it's time. I'm afraid that the Nokia 808 and Lumia 1020 were the last ones.

As V20 not only has higher stock battery capacity than G5, but since it has removable battery and removable back cover, you will be able to replace the battery to a bigger, higher capacity extended battery. And don't forget that V20's camera has full featured manual mode, conversely to S7.

I still can't explain my teen friends that iphone camera isn't the best. On other websites, they made iphone win like hell

The camera on the G5 is the best of these four. Imagine the camera of the V20.
