Google Pixel XL review: Upsampled

28 October 2016
Google was always a service - the best search engine on Earth. Now under the Alphabet umbrella, Google is becoming a brand - for online services yes, but also for hardware. Leading the charge are the Pixels, Google’s equivalent to Samsung’s Galaxy or Apple’s i-gadgets... and every bit as premium.

As said before, looks maybe so-so, but considering its Google's first official phone, it's a worthy achievement.

The glass window may be gopping to look at and the front may be as interesting as a potato, but, it is a good device.

If only Google has something for the common man (budget oriented) in the pipeline.

"The design is arguably bland". This is not true, it IS bland, nobody is arguing that.

And that is why I wait eagerly for a gsmarena review. Detailed and comprehensive. Anyways, I wouldn't be buying this phone simply because it's priced way too much for those specs. I would like to see a review on HTC desire 10 LS/Pro please.

My mate just got the Pixel. It is gob smacking gorgeous. I love the clean lines. The character and feel was even better than I imagined. What was reported here in storage is wrong. Don't know how the site can be so bias. You can upload all your photos and 4k videos unlimitedly in full resolution on the associated cloud.

Maybe the Pixel XL is different than the Pixel, which is what I have, but I bet the setting is there on the XL as well.

The Pixel does have a sRGB mode, located in Developer Settings.

most overrated phone of the year.

That HDR+ is so impressive in both being well, an HDR mode and also doing wonders in low light as well. Wish other manufacturers would implement HDR like that.

AnonD-546038, 29 Oct 2016Forgot to mention OP3, best smartphone 2016 quality/price/p... moreThe calibration on the OP3's screen after the sRGB update is much better than this Pixel XL's default calibration. I will take that without even thinking over extra resolution on a 5.5 inches phone.

Why didn't you turn on the srgb mode in developer settings? Another site tested the pixel with that setting (both off and on) and found that it had essentially perfect deltaE and grays, but white point was too warm (around 6350). Without that toggle both of last year's nexus' screens great horribly.
Another thing is that you didn't mention what the user experience was like in terms of touch latency and frame drops. Both of those are things that reviewers have mentioned as being unusually good for Android with these pixels.
Also how did you measure the storage speed?

So average display with average calibration, good camera with lens flare and inconsistent white balance, not ois for that jittery eis that looks unnatural, a single speaker down from the two great ones on the 6p and a glass half back instead of fully metal, add to that 300 dollars and u can really say this is a success, even storage had 64 now it's gone, I don't think people who really care that much about cameras would prefer it to v20 or s7 but the stock Android boys will go all crazy and forget they have a better than stock oem selling for half the price ; op3, so get busy with Google maybe that little g on the back will make u feel better

Didn't expect the battery life to be average. 3400 plus mah should be in the region of 90h battery life basef on this site's tests. Shame.

This phone will surely be a solid performer on day to day tasks. Too bad the pricing is sky high.

Forgot to mention OP3, best smartphone 2016 quality/price/performance wise. Camera is not as good and screen is not as good but it costs half. And it'll have support from software and has already lots of roms and kernels, like the "Nexuses" have.

Thanks for the review GSM, great as always. Comparing photos the Mi5s is slightly better handling daytime photos and the Pixel is better at night photos that retain a lot more detail but with a lot more noise.

It would be great to do a side by side blind comparison. 1 thing for sure is the best photos taken on mobile right now come from a $340 Mi5s and the $750 Pixel.

Its camera is amazing, better than htc or samsung. Dont get me wrong,note7 really produces great images. But when it captures tress and all natural things, it really sucks. Definitely overprocessed. Looks great on phone screen but looks so artificial on computer screen. And lots of photographers said the same.
I love htc10, but pixel's camera is definitely better. Images look punchy, yet still look natural.
I think huawei P9 with its leica camera can really match this monster.
                                      Congrats Goog!

                                      Pardon my english.
