Moto Z Play review: Playmodo

23 December 2016
Few names in the fast-paced mobile industry can boast such a long-standing and universal brand recognition such as the legendary Motorola. Even now, after the glory GSM age is long gone, and the brand is under Lenovo leadership, the Moto badge still has a special place in the minds of the tech-savvy.

Sort by:

"However, Motorola arguably took things a bit too far in its strive to maintain a clutter-free experience. Then again, it might be sort of Google's fault for not having a standard Android file manager app to offer. Regardless, there is no real solution for outright browsing your files on the Moto Z Play. Sure, Google Photos is there and it has access to your local storage, but that is limited to images and videos alone. Furthermore, the Photos app seems to have trouble with quite a few video and audio codecs. But more on that later."

Did you guys somehow miss Moto's File Manager app? It's preinstalled on my Moto Z, so I'd assume the same for the Moto Z Play. Sure, it's no Ghost Commander, but it's still a perfectly fine file manager that does what you describe.

Things like this aren't always consistent because maybe Doze doesn't work 100% of the time. My X Play had less than 1% drop in 9 hours with Moto Display off, just an observation from last sleep.

AnonD-606096, 29 Dec 2016so you trust more in the ohh touchwiz is soo shit that ever... moreOfc, touchwiz is a mess that runs double services, google's and proprietary samsung's, so at best it should idle the same; never less

In usage depends on the optimization, but assuming its perfect, c7 still has to push harder cause touchwiz is a hog, has bigger screen, and smaller battery.

Also, there is plenty of evidence that touchwiz is heavy, no need to believe any different. And dont point any benchmarks, for one i never look at them so i dont know what to make of it, but mostly because these dont reflect daily use smoothness

This phone seemed to tick all the right boxes for me, as I don't need a speed daemon. I wasn't planning on using mods either.
But the price instantly killed it as an option. There's no way I'm paying twice the price of a G4 Plus for a better CPU, slightly better screen and mods support. Hell, I don't even need the fingerprint scanner, a plain Moto G4 will do if you can get the 32GB version (which usually you can't).

Uberano, 26 Dec 2016I would like to see some numbers on that if that's possible.Me too, I am looking at the results and between the scores in hours we know, talk time, web browsing and video playback and the end result, if we extrapolate, shows that the "super power efficient" Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset in the standby test, the one we can not see, the Moto Z Play is one of the worst phone we have seen in the, top 30? Those results are more for an average, good, battery phone, not for one of the kings in 2016. I repeat myself, something is wrong with this test, the extrapolation of the data and the info about the SD 625 does not compute. Can someone, please, do the test again or show the standby results. Was something on-off with the phone gsmarena tested? I am not kidding if I expected 120 hours so 100 are a very good result for a phone but disappointing for the Moto Z Play. Thanks

Yes, the review is a bit off, for what it should be, but perhaps the reviewer has some personal issue with it. I've used it since it came out and most of the time it was an awesome experience. The only visible downside for me at the moment, is that sometimes AF on the camera cannot lock on. Other than that it's all great. A lot of people complain about performance (due to the mid specs), but I'm happy with it. The phone is snappy, looks great and the biggest of all the pros - battery life. I was stunned clocking 3-4 days on one charge. I'll take that over slightly faster performance all day, every day!
