Moto Z Play review: Playmodo

23 December 2016
Few names in the fast-paced mobile industry can boast such a long-standing and universal brand recognition such as the legendary Motorola. Even now, after the glory GSM age is long gone, and the brand is under Lenovo leadership, the Moto badge still has a special place in the minds of the tech-savvy.

I've had my Moto Z play for about three weeks now and love it. I'm not a gamer, so high benchmark scores were not a big factor. Everyday use is what count. I often find I have over a dozen apps open with no lag. I also found it odd that the reviewer quibbled about the ugly plastic charger port without mentioning the headphone jack. The headphone jack is a huge difference between the Moto Z and the Moto Z Force which sacrifice the jack to provide a marginally thinner phone.

Finally, I have a comment about the mods. It is impossible to appreciate the mods without trying them. I received the projector mod with my phone for $50 (black Friday special). I was able to put it to use right away after my wife missed part of our kids Christmas concert. The performance blows everyone away. I was able to fill a huge wall where I work (lights off, of course). I would not pay the $295 asking price, but if Moto can increase the number of available mods and bring the price down, they'll be a hit. Something other phones don't offer.

A whole page about sintetic benchmarks and not a single phrase about real life performance (except the conclusion). By far, one of the best midrangers. Too bad this review doesn't say all about it!

I always appreciate GSMAena's thorough review but they sometimes too much care about benchmark scores and rather minor compromises.

Intensive gaming aside, SD625 has decent performance and best-in-class energy-efficiency.
            And Moto mods offer boredom-proof!

As I see it, most reviewers and readers on other sites laud Moto Z Play for its stunning battery life (one of the best ever), and solod daily-use performance.

Not liking a device is fine, but a review like this can't do this phone enough justice. I have this and an LG G4. Not only does the overall UI perform much better than the G4's, but it also runs ridiculously cool under a heavy workload. This phone is probably more of a niche product, yet people are amazed when I tell them I don't have to charge my phone for around two days, or I can do a little 20% top up and be okay for the rest of the day...

I don't like the review at all not just because I own the moto z play but because the approach of the review is absolutely incorrect. Well I understand, everybody is different so as their preferences. But reviewing a product is to be taken seriously. Not only the product image is at stake but also the credibility of the website. I guess either the reviewer didn't use the phone or he is paid to write a bad review. Well this is only my opinion.
Anyways lets get back to the product, I have been using moto z play for a month now, and I have no complaints. It's really sad people are judging the phone by its specifications. But for me, what matters is the user experience and I am completely satisfied what moto z play has to offer. I don't understand what is raw performance and benchmark scores are?. Is there any relavance of these stupid things in real life usage. Are you going to check your phone's benchmark scores first thing in the morning? Simple answer is a big no. What do we check the first thing in the morning, is the amount of battery left in the phone and I am really proud to say with moto z play I don't need worry about that. The stand by time is amazing. Battery life in general is spectacular, it is very well optimised.
I think I made my point. The phone is amazing I just love the design, It looks like a very high end phone.
Camera is good, but struggles in low light. Screen is again very good. Speaker is above average nice sound quality.
Well the general performance of the phone is superb no complaints.
In the end I want to say, stop comparing moto z play with oneplus 3 or any other phone for that matters. Specifications are not the only criteria to justify the worth.

Too harsh a review. Since it's Moto, just get a tempered glass protector for the front and back if you want to use it naked, iPhone jet black scratches as well, so does the Pixel glass window.
1+ is a joke and irrelevant. You get the same screen, a lil better cam, wayyy lesser battery and none of the Moto tweaks.

But hey, you can not have the thinness of Moto Z without foregoing the 3.5 mm jack and the big battery. Z Play's thickness (it is not really thick either) is an advantage relative to the Z, IMO.

I used moto z play for a week before switching to moto z force
in the summer I had s7edge
I must say for the low price of z play it's much above it's price range
amazing phone I felt in love with it
well done moto and lenovo, all the trio moto z are amazing

                                  thank you gsmarena

I personally felt the review a bit harsh. Its not fair comparing Moto Z play with G4 plus and OP3. The phone doesn't fit in either of the category. I was expecting a comparision with Zenfone 3 and Samsung A7. Moto has a spectacular brand value and after sales support here in India which OnePlus and Xiaomi lack.
I have been using the phone since 1 month and undoubtedly justifies its price tag. This is one of the best mid range phones available in the market which is totally overlooked.
