Huawei P10 vs LG G6 dual camera shootout: Sightseeing in Barcelona

06 March 2017
We're saying goodbye to yet another Mobile World Congress, but we have a few days left to hang around the beautiful city of Barcelona. Filled with Gaudi's masterpieces and amazing architecture in general, it would serve as an excellent arena for camera shootouts and we just couldn't miss this opportunity. We left the MWC with two great flagship devices each with a dual camera setup of its own - the LG G6 and the Huawei P10 - and we've decided to put them to a real-life test in the streets of Barcelona.

Those are some tiny sensors compared to the competition and unfortunately you can see that. It's close to 1/3. I have to say I expected much better. There's only so far you can go with aperture and processing if your sensor is not up to par. Because physics.
Personally I was hoping only the chipset is below par on the G6.. eh. If only it was really a value offering like LG promised. Seems like only hardware is "value", while the price is not.

In this phone context of P10 and LG G6, it is no-brainer that LGG6 is an overall better phone compared to P10. To me they are in different league. Most people would prefer shooting rich in colour and contrast photos, so black and white comes second to most street photographers. P10 is okay but seems stay behind. Both vendors do produce good phones though, however LGG6 leads in this context. Off and out:

Anonymous, 07 Mar 2017So in G6 there is absolutely NO improvements over G5. Moreo... moreSamsung troll again....didn't you see the results? G6 already did great job! Megapixel is nothing but a number...

So in G6 there is absolutely NO improvements over G5. Moreover, G6 has worse camera than G5, because it has lower, 13 MP while the rest of the specs are the same (f/1.8, same pixel size, etc).

          Compared to the G5:
G6's disadvantages are that it has worse camera (the same specs except that the resolution is lower) and non-removable battery. So G6 is a downgrade compared to the G5.
The only advantage of G6 is that it has heat pipes that cool the CPU/GPU and reduce the throttling only by 10-15% (if I remember correctly).

Also, their CPU and GPU is the same (S821 is just an overclocked S820).

The dual camera thing is nonsense. The wide angle camera is inferior again. The reason why LG increased it's resolution to 13 MP is to deceive and scam people to think that it has the same quality, while in fact it has worse quality: no OIS, f/2.4.

Also, the secondary camera should be optical zoomed (telephoto lens) because a zoom lens is much more useful than a wide angle one.

Of course, Samsung chose the best solution: you can buy lens case for S7 and Note 7 for which you can attach telephoto or wide angle lens. And this way you have all the advantages of main camera (wide aperture, same resolution, same image quality and OIS).

P10 and G6...4 weird cameras...P10 is good in night time with its monochrome sensor, but even then it's a hit and miss, maybe it would be great if the camera would shoot automatically color and monochrome photos and you would choose afterwards what looks better (like the HDR or flash features in Windows Phone 8.1/10 Mobile, which can be edited afterwards), but with all this in consideration the single real benefit of this monochrome sensor would have been to help the color sensor to have better dynamic range and exposure through some intelligent algorithms, but it's too much to ask from Huawei, even the sensor set-up it's an accomplishment for them... The G6 camera does photos surprisingly well for a 1/3" camera (ok, iPhone 7 has the same size and shoots photos similarly good, but no one else did a great small sensor except them), în good light and low light, and the wide-angle camera does some incredible shots in daylight (only daylight), the giant Crab looks like a Crabzilla, I'm astonished, they have done a good job with the dual camera set up.

The LG G6 is hands down the clear winner in both daylight and low-light. Superb job LG...! My god... LG's overall image quality has improved by leaps and bounds... will probably rival Samsungs G8. Outstanding detail retention in low light by the G6.

Apperture is important for the amount of light that will enter the sensor. The wider the apperture the more light will enter the sensor, the lower ISO you need to use in dim light.

Everyone is telling bokeh shots can be dowload through app but if you really a photography enthusiast you will really admire how p10s bokeh shots ahead compare to other.. You will not admire coz u are a amature and unguided folks in photography . Just sayin'

It is supposed to augment the regular 12MP color sensor by adding the details captured with B&W sensor and also deletes the noise using the data captured by the B&W sensor.. Probably not finalize yet in this P10 but checkout Mate 9's samples and stare in awe.....

Hi GSMArena! I'm a big fan of ur site and have been a frequent visitor of ur site for almost 3 years. I appreciate the camera comparison u did between P10 and G6 HOWEVER, if u were to compare P10 Plus with G6, that would've been great. The reason is, P10 Plus has 1/1.8 aperture as opposed to P10's 1/2.2 aperture. If u could do this comparison, I will be eternally grateful 4 ur service. Thnx

Anonymous, 06 Mar 2017Are you going to test p10 plus? It would be a better rival ... morePlease also make a camera comparison using the P10 plus unit, since this unit has a wider aperture, comparable to the one of the G6 unit.

I am pleasantly surprised by both the P10 and G6 cameras in low light. Maybe the G6 is sometimes too bright, one can also notice that the highlights are slightly blown out. However, compared to the predecessors of the both units (P9 and G5), the low-light photography made a HUGE step in terms of quality. Nice work!
