LG G6 review: Cutting corners... Like a pro

16 March 2017
Cutting corners - it's the story of the LG G6's life. Literally - the smartphone's display doesn't end in right angles, it's soft arcs instead. Figuratively - the G6 isn't packing the absolute greatest hardware on the market.

Anonymous, 20 Mar 2017The chipset couldnt bother me less.Yes its a SD821,but its ... moreeven if you say that sd821 is still one of the bests, it is still undeniable that its going to lose its ground for just months when other phones come out. What i mean is, technically, a phone which is released in the beg of the year could still go on par with the phones released at the end of the year. But what LG did is the other way around. It released a phone in the beg of the year with the tech of last year's end and i doubt(highly doubt) that it could go on par with the phones that would be released subsequently this year. LG did better last year, but still not remarkable. And now, they're losing their spotlight already.

jtrogr, 20 Mar 2017Everything except the galaxy series and iphone is getting boring. All western brands are boring, especially Samsung and apple phones (releasing middling specs at high prices)... and that's sad.

Because the only interesting phones are nowadays exclusive to China. Like the new Asus phone with 8 gigs of ram, or Xiaomi Mi Mix which does bezeless right ( w plenty of battery), or the new Gionee with 7000 mah battery, 1440p screen, 6GB ram. Power and extreme autonomy is one package ... you know the kind of phones you don't find in the west, they all lose in sth major, be it performance, ergonomy or autonomy. There are phones in China that can have all three (Mi mix is one for example, which is maxed to everything except camera quality)

Well, I do like the G6's design and UI more than Samsung's upcoming S8, that's for sure.

Lg G6= Lg G5 minus. same adreno 530 as the G5, quad core only went up .02, gorilla glass went back to 3. This IS NOT an upgrade it is a DOWNGRADE. I have had the t mobile G2X the first dual core phone, then the G2, G3, G4, G5, all upgrades were a lot better than the G6. LG has gone CHEAP! Well maybe Samsung.

AnonD-654245, 20 Mar 2017I'm amazed how a phone launched 5 years ago can still beat ... moreNow it's not, look at chinese phones. The Mecca of innovation has simply moved elsewhere in them planet.

For example (in China) you can find phone with 1-8GB of ram in different configurations.
Different SoCs from 3 different companies (Huawei, mediatek, qualcomm)
Strange cameras, ie selfie cams as big as back camera, cameras with mechanism.
Inductive earpieces, supersonic sensors , ultrahigh batteries (some phones have up to 10000 mah) ... and sooo many more (often stranger things).

Who would have thunk? Communist China offers more product variability, more competition and actually interesting choices. "Free market" west has cartels that fix their specs so that can all benefit from cutting costs.

So the phone industry is alive and well if you seek phones further than what companies that act in a cartel like way offer.

I'm amazed how a phone launched 5 years ago can still beat 2017 flagships in the camera dept....this show how Nokia 808 were ahead of its time.
What a mediocre camera from LG...shame!
It seems that creativity reached its limit as most of the phones today have similar specs.
Nokia comeback is just a promise, but hopefully they can bring us something genuinely new next year.

I'd rather get a Mate 9 over this phone. Even if software and security patches update is very underwhelming for Huawei phones not to mention the lower ppi count but the battery performance is much better.

                                    Why buying G6 for $700-800?
Low battery and worst battery life rating for price.
Last year chipset with high price
2:1 aspect ratio? oh God for what? really needed?
Design, its beautiful (front but back is ugly for many people though) but nothing extreme different or something new or remarkable achievement.
                                    Regional limitations on nice-to-have features
                                    No stereo speakers
Priced well into flagship territory despite 'value proposition' claims
Please tell why to choose G6? If we are apple, sony, samsung, xiaomi fan. What new and different?

People need something special/needed to change to other brand when it come to favorite.
                                    Example:
My little sister is iPhone die hard fans, using iP7, one day she said need bigger display and better battery life but no need high price phone, so based on what she need I suggest Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 SD. First she said she dont want, dont trust Chinese phone but after test it for 2 days she happy and it suit her need. Then I bought her one.

Have friend, middle class man, farmer, entire life (android era) using Samsung midrangger as Samsung fans and never satisfied. One day I suggest him to get mi 5 just for $240 and last time we met he said thanks, wonderful phone and cant believe Chinese company can do it very well.

My aunt, Samsung die hard fans, want to get Tab or big screen phone, I suggest mi max and happy to go since now. Price to value is very damn good.

Friend, LG fans, G5 owner, falling in love with curved design and get S7edge, now bark he have best phone of 2016. You can said that gimmick screen but look what Samsung and phone owner get.

Childhood friend, iPhone fan and iphone 6s user, hate android coz 3 samsung midranger disappoint him, I suggest OP3T because he want to play android game, hardcore gamer. Now he often hand OP3T than iPhone.

Friend, Sony fan using XZ, you know them well: hating samsung, apple and other also slime bezel phone, but get mi mix because of design. Design! Best design phone in 2016!

So why choose G6??? if we can have mi mix with beautiful design, S8 with curved design and other +, XZP with fantastic cam performance, iPhone with brand status, OP3T with same chipset and better for gaming, mi 5 line with half price, mate 9 with supper performance also eye catching design, dont forget dual cam.

It would be a near perfect phone if it has 4,000 mAh battery and IR bluster. As for SD 835, it is not necessary.

But if the SoC is something that can pass, old camera sensor and lossing the removable battery its not(at least for me).
Pretty risky decisions on part of LG... lets see if their gambling paid off.
