Samsung Galaxy S8+ review: Infinity and beyond

18 April 2017
What was once an impossible fantasy - a sketch in someone’s book, a render of an ambitious concept - is now a reality. These are just some thoughts that come to mind holding the Galaxy S8+, the big and bold next step Samsung took.

AnonD-77443, 19 Apr 2017Wouldn't surprise if Samsung adds a 18:9 photo ratio later.... moreXperias got 2 to 2.5 times more pixels. Naturally it should be sharp. Well at least latest are, with xzs finally being useful (no visible artifacts and noise, better corners, more hdr detail). From older only xperia x is sharp, is sharper than them all but without 4K and with artifacts. Also, sony manage to capture sharper 4K than samsung, not to mention more real colors. Kinda miss those 16:9 16Mp at least and somy is only one to have something similar. Its near to impossible t9 want from somebody f.ex. to go from 38mp to 12. Like where is it going...? 38Mp is sharp like hell.

Soc 14nm to 10nm not quantum leap, can't expect efficiency like 28nm to 14nm.
Also 20 (really?) core GPU take a toll to battery life

I agree that Samsung did wrong with the battery capacity being the primary concern for the S8/S8+, but the test gsmarena has conducted did not only measured video playback, it also measured many other thing, that the 16:9 format did not mattered! Things like 3g standby, 4g standby and calls and of course, the very important internet browsing with WiFi which is imo the most important factor. I do have a tablet and a 4k HDR TV, I don't watch videos in daily basis on my mobile and a I never talk more than hour, I live in a capital city, so I always have 4G coverage, I am a power user and I charge my phone daily, so long standby times doesn't effect me. I also have the S7 edge and was afraid that the S8+ will fail my battery needs, but it holds better on 4G handling and internet browsing, which my primary use of my phone, as I oftenly check new sites and various content during the day. Internet browsing test uses fullscreen and if the battery consumption was bigger, it would consume more, yet in Samsung's measurements, PhoneArena's and now gsmarena's test, in all scored better results than the S7 edge.

I am not impressed! A weird long thin/small display and the fingerprint scanner, camera smudger, is the worst placed ever unreachable far up on the back of the too tall screen!
Bixby and DeX are toys I would never use!
Camera and performance and batterylife are good enough just as they are on every flagship, and almost ever midrange and budget phone, from any manufacturer! Stereo crosstalk is not good enough for a this expensive flagship!
I think iPhone 8 will impress me a lot more than this S8! iPhone 7 already outperform S8 in most performance tests!

s7 edge still the best in my book , half price same display , same camera almost, same design but with bit bigger bezels and better batttery life ,same speaker, curved back and smaller bezels dont justify 500 dollars for me , good mobile overall but s7 edge still is the king tbh

My s8+ will be here tomorrow but while at best buy yesterday I got to hold the phone and tried the fingerprint scanner , yes it's weird so I spread my fingers in the peace sign and wow , would you look at that my middle finger sat right on point. My point? Who said you have to set your phone to your pointer , you have other fingers.lol and the mono speaker? Yea I'm not a teen who likes to blare their phone an annoy everyone in earshot . The AKG Harmon headphones will do nicely . That is all COME ON WEDNESDAY .

For shooting movies 21:9 is common. Youtube videos and most other media we consume use 16:9 aspect ratio. 18.5:9 is halfway between 16:9 and 21:9. So depending on the content, you either have horizontal bars or vertical bars, but at least those bars will be rather narrow.

I find S8+ camera 4:3 aspect ratio to be ok. 4:3 and 3:2 are the two most common standards for photography. but sadly we will have to deal with huge black bars when viewing the photos on that 18.5:9 display (just over a third of the screen will be black)

I'm not clear on how you guys can say that you expect the Snapdragon version to have comparable battery life to the Exynos variant that you tested when the Exynos version normally shows much better efficiency and battery life than the Snapdragon version as shown through your own testing of Samsung flagships over and over, and other sites have already reached the same conclusion when testing both versions of the S8'S side by side.

"The only real problem we have with the new navigation scheme, combined with the tall body of the S8+ is that it leaves the main controls sitting pretty low, relative to the whole device. Chances are you will naturally tend towards holding the S8+ higher up to take advantage of the extra vertical screen real estate. That, however, means your thumb needs to do plenty of stretching to reach the bottom left or right corners of the screen"

This is why I'm not even considering a S8/+ or G6. Terribly thought out design simply for better marketing of higher numbers.
