Sony Xperia XZ Premium review: The showstopper

12 May 2017
The Sony Xperia XZ Premium has a gorgeous 4K display. Better yet, a 4K HDR display! The latest Snapdragon 835 chipset is pulling the strings and delivering lightning-fast LTE while the Adreno 540 is firing up millions of pixels in a heartbeat. With or without the mirror finish, this is one of the classiest designs around and waterproof, too.

Lex79, 15 May 2017Hmm....... Well I'll agree that appears to be the way is... moreNo it's not subjective. Looks are subjective, ergonomy isn't . Ergonomy is nested on how big the average person is which is mostly genetically determined. You can't wish a bigger hand, you can't wish bigger pants.

People prefer the smallest bezels possible as long as they don't come with drawbacks (useless aspect ratios, accidental touches and easy to break).

As they're fixing those , the bezeless look would become industry standard, a bit of how touchscreens became despite many people were insisting (back then) that physical buttons are better (no they're not, they take too much space from the screen).

The bezeless style can bring 5.5 inchers as small as the first smarphones. Phones that are both palm/pocket friendly and "information friendly". That's the holy grail that companies like Xiaomi, Samsung and LG are trying (yet -for the time being- failing) for.

More low light photos. Its the only issue that bothers me. Ok I know. Who the hell does a lot of photos at night ? Noone. Especially with mobile phones, however thats the subject that made me interested.

Well I'll agree that appears to be the way is going, there are those that seek a more balanced screen to body ratio though, something like say the Oneplus 3T as opposed to this new approach or the legacy big and heavy designs.

People like different things, that's why it's subjective. And again not everyone is yet sold that this new approach is actually for the best overall.

That's true across all medium, from phones to laptops and tablets, to TVs even.

"everybody wants a smaller and lighter device". That's literally true even for those that think that they don't.

The only reason people go to bigger devices is for screen and battery size alone (or any other extra features), nothing else! Do you think that many would buy a giant phone with a small screen in the middle? Think again, Dell tried it with the Dell Streak, what a spectacular failure that phone was...

You don't really believe that do you?

There's a cost element that partially accounts for the sales difference between regular and plus iPhones.

Look, am not saying there are not advantages to smaller bezels, but there are drawbacks as well. And this whole 19:8 'no bezel' thing doesn't have everyone on board

Note phones sold better once they removed excessive bezels (and are actually much smaller than Xperia premium). IPhone plus sells a lot worse that regular iPhone, people prefer it for the bigger screen and battery, not the bezels.

If you make the same screen and battery size with less bezels most of everyone would prefer it. People don't like big devices, they like big screens.

The ideal is big screen in a small device, anything else is settling for less.

The XZP is big and heavy yes, that'll bother some and not others. Being big and heavy never stopped the Note range finding an audience, it hasn't stopped the 'Plus' series of iPhones being successful.

Not all people are fans of this minimal bezel philosophy, would say I'm convinced as yet, and the edge screen.....no thanks, more gimmick than feature.

My opinion of course, it won't be the same for everyone......

Anonymous, 15 May 2017Dual edge screen = cute but useless, more fragile Bixby ... moreI'd be the last to praise S8.
So you chose the wrong guy to lecture about Samsung.

IMO they should find a way to make battery removable again (don't know how, you're Samsung find a way)

Use 17:9, so when soft buttons are on the usable screen would be 16:9

Use true 4k (4096x2160), given the 17:9 aspect ratio. That way they'll make gear vr useful (right now it's useless due to the low resolution and screen door effect of QHD+ pentile).

Also true 4k is a film standard, so it would look great to many movies.

Use more ram so that they'll be future proofed and better ram management so that background apps will be closed by the OS only when leaking battery. Less loading is huge for day to day experience.

Lastly they should use underclass fingerprint sensor, the fingerprint in the back is useless.
Oh fix the over saturated photos too.

See I'm nowhere nears a Samsung fan. Doesn't mean that I'll like Sony. Those two along with HTC form the unholy trinity of middling quality at crazy prices.

No other phones need any mention that they are well equipped for low light shots, that's why there's no separate mention like that. Read some other phones' reviews and talk.

This camera doesn't hold a candle to any available flagship as far as I can see. I think the low light shots from One Plus 3 is pretty much comparable.

If this had a good camera then it would have been mentioned at first place. Like people already know that Pixel has the best camera, along with S7 and other phones. Besides no point in discussing really, people don't expect a good camera from Sony anyway, so Sony never bothers to put a good one. Basically users are better off with a Chinese phone then this typically overpriced nonsense.

I'm sure you're hurting because you're clearly delusional but that's your problem honestly about which no one gives a darn.

Xperia premium is a behemoth of a device, most have to forget one handed use, and many would have to never use articles of clothing that they used to like (the phone doesn't fit)

Bezels should be removed and decent palm rejection should be applied. Bezels are a throwback to the past.

That doesn't make Sony a good company, they're both poor companies but at least Samsung tries genuine innovation, like for example the excellent accurate screens of hers that are objectively the best in the world. But I agree with you that they fail in a lot of things too.

There are very few companies that make steps forwards at all times. Maybe Xiaomi, maybe Huawei (their high end models), maybe Apple (maaaybe) ... but most of the rest are f%&$ing around, like Sony never fixing her camera performance despite the heroic attempts or Samsung removing things that the pro crowd used (remov battery, IR).
