Sony Xperia XZ Premium review: The showstopper

12 May 2017
The Sony Xperia XZ Premium has a gorgeous 4K display. Better yet, a 4K HDR display! The latest Snapdragon 835 chipset is pulling the strings and delivering lightning-fast LTE while the Adreno 540 is firing up millions of pixels in a heartbeat. With or without the mirror finish, this is one of the classiest designs around and waterproof, too.

That would make sense if in previous years they had bigger batteries etc. But nearly every Sony flagship device has abysmal battery rating on GSMarena. Even the Xperia Z5 premiums battery life is rubbish.

So thats just an excuse not fact.

You get slightly longer screen, but you lose width of the screen, which is not at all ideal for reading text while browsing or any documents.

Iphones tend to have the best LCD displays out there. And if Samsungs S8 display beats that then yeah it obliterates the Xperia XZ premium display.

Superior Auto cranks ISO too high - that's a given. Manual mode without any tweaks uses a lower ISO by default, however. If it's very low light flip your finger up the screen - it's not rocket science.

The difference between the S8 and XZP is not that marked when there's a light source in play. On a night out with flash enabled you're going to get fine results from the Premium - that covers all the use cases you site. And I maintain that daylight shots make up the majority of use cases anyway.

AnonD-664474, 13 May 2017Huh? People take photos usually in good lighting scenarios.... moreUmmm. Lowlight is totally different to dark. Gsmarena studio low light (which the XZP fails badly) has a brightness of 28 lux which is still a reasonable amount of light.

Flash on a mobile phone is a great way to ruin photos especially with people involved. It should be a last resort.

That 72h isn't really that bad for a 4K screen. G6 has 0.2" larger screen, but has 300 pixels less than the XZ Premium and still averages the same endurance rating. We'll see how the Mi 6 does, but I seriously doubt it will blow the S8/S8+ away too.

Nothing beats sAMOLED's efficiency hence why Sony is moving with JDI AMOLED this late 2017 or early 2018

If they take photos in the dark, they use the thing called "flashlight" because it's guarantees that you'll never get any image so bright in dark environments.

What you have showed me is showing the S8 doing better in low light, but it barely outpaced it tbh. If anything, the difference was surprisingly negligible that I'd think it's only a comparison of the S8 and the G6's camera - that how close the battle. Samsung wins in low light, but you have to give it to Sony for improving the most in low light. Seriously speaking, that's way better than what we used to get before. More room for improvements, but it's almost there for Sony. The IFA 2017 Sony flagship will surely match the whole competition of low light if not really coming out of top

This is a nice try though by Sony, next time they must put the correct battery size for such a resolution. :)

S8 has 577 ppi. Set it to QHD+ and the battery is powering 577 ppi. Set it to FHD+ and the battery is still powering the 577 ppi. Same story goes to the XZ Premium. And they did lower the CPU power to save more battery because 4K will surely drain it quickly.

But benchmarks mean nothing in real world. You're not gonna buy a flagship phone to play Crysis, would you?
Let's just see how fast they are in speed tests. XZs already blew the S8 away, and so will the XZ Premium, mark my words
