Nokia 8 review: Connecting the dots

25 August 2017
This is it then. The long-awaited Finnish flagship that goes all in against the phones that rule today. The Finnish cameraphone returning to claim the prize that was once its birthright. Everybody bow and make way?

I miss the FM Radio functionality. Has anyone found any way to listen to FM radio. S835 is capable of FM radio (see Galaxy S8, LG v30 for reference). So it should also possible for Nokia 8 with a SW update, unless they have not implemented the hw design already....

My last time i used nokia was 1520, it was pretty good device, almost perfect camera, and very good user experience.
Can't hardly waitin for nokia comeback.
Once a king, it always be a king.
The best bulit quality, very very good in camera, great user experience, the most lovely handheld ever made i believe, even it's not perfect.

i thought the phone just like any other other phone on the market this days, there is no special things hidden in it. The old lumias design is better than this but the software android is better, hopefully they bring back the old design with refreshment android software, love the colorfull eye catching uniboby policarbonate, glance screen, clearblack display etc.

Love it, but since Microsoft seems not to care about phones anymore, i'm planning on buying Nokia 8. Bit too expensive to the fact, that hmd global is almost New to the mobile market, but still good value for the Money.

However,I'm a little afraid about open source development for Nokia 8.will Nokia be a developer friendly OEM like OP or Sony!?Still waiting for test review from Jerry Rig Everything.

Anyone remember the Lumia 920 and it's bokeh effect? Single lens and all. Then 1020 with 41 megapixels, before that 808, N9? I know this ain't the real nokia, won't stop me from buying it though.

Got my Nokia 8 on Friday. I was hoping that the photo quality as shown in the review was just down to a faulty phone, but I'was disappointed to see that the Nokia 8 really didn't produce very good looking photos (to put it kindly).

However, I then read about the Google HDR+ camera app being available for download from xda-developers so I figured I'd give it a try. Not really expecting very much, but the Google app is a revelation! The difference is truly stunning and I'd strongly recommend other Nokia 8 owners to give it a try just to see what's possible. It's not a perfect solution though, the improvements come with a severe drawback - there are some very off looking artifacts in the rightmost side of photos taken in landscape mode (don't ask me why the orientation of the photo makes a difference). Bright blue and red dots are scattered in lines along the height of the photo. Cropping 2-3% off the right side of the photo resolves the problem, but that's not really anything I want to do for every photo I take...

Hopefully though Nokia will be able to improve on their camera app in the future bringing it to the same level as Google's offering.

Well I've got the Nokia 8 on pre order. Fingers crossed it's what I wanted it to be. For me, there's the nostalgia of the Nokia brand. I'm not a teen and I had plenty of Nokia's starting with the 3210.
The tie up with Zeiss made my day if I'm honest.
My last Nokias, n95 and 808 had cameras that were years ahead of every one else.

So what's missing from the Nokia 8 on my wish list... An upto date 41 megapixel snapper and the boom sound speakers that the n95 had. The ring volume was astounding. Not boom sound as in HTC. The n95 ring volume was LOUD period.

I agree with the comments about a Nokia theme but I'm sure they won't miss that opportunity as a downloadable APK.

I'm happy Nokia are back in the game. Its good for us. The consumer. More choice and innovation.
I'm happy with the phone design. Looks Nokia and classy. I didn't want bezel less. I'd read an insurance companies report that the s8 was the most breakable phone made to date because of the infinity display.

It's a shame it's not Google daydream vr certified. I'm sure that would have been beneficial, at least pr wise.

Roll on next week when it arrives...
