Nokia 8 review: Connecting the dots

25 August 2017
This is it then. The long-awaited Finnish flagship that goes all in against the phones that rule today. The Finnish cameraphone returning to claim the prize that was once its birthright. Everybody bow and make way?

This is the first time I'm commenting on a review in the review forum. I have been a Nokia fan for most of my cellular life. Eight of the twelve phones I have ever owned were Nokias. I was a big fan of S40v2 (my former Nokia 6230 stands out) and Symbian S60v3 (my former E71 stands out). I always liked Nokia's skin overlay on Symbian...it was very much reminiscent of their S40 skins. Enough with my great nostalgic memories. Now to the matter at hand.

It's a pity Nokia didn't provide it's own full fledged theme/skin/overlay on top of Nougat. It would have surely felt more like Nokia of old. It certainly has the processor to keep things fast even if not as lightening fast as stock Android. Plain and simple I dislike stock Android. It looks ugly and feels less intuitive not to mention the notification panel has less features. Yes updates may be faster but updates doesn't happen every day or every week. In fact the security update happens once a month and the OS update happens once a year. Even before a security updates reaches your phone you would have spent countless hours pasting your eyes on the screen doing countless things so YES looks matter.

It certainly seems like a great flagship with the beautiful looking body, smooth looking wrapped screen along with that lovely looking Glance screen along with Carl Zeiss lens and the OZO sound feature etc. but the look of the OS just spoils it for me. Stock Android always make the phone look cheap in my view. I'm also surprised it doesn't have more gestures, even the Galaxy S3 have more gestures. Cheaper newer phones like the ZTE Axon 7 has a lot more gestures. Every stock Android I have comes across just seem to have the basic gestures like flip to mute/reject call etc. For Nokia's first flagship entry in the Android world I expected more gestures. I wanted to see the nostalgic Nokia icons again not the same icons you see on every stock Android. Nokia is still legendary, regardless.

Just gone up for pre order in the uk, £499 at Carphone warehouse, and you get a free Nokia Activité Smartwatch....I can't find much to argue about there.

    Order placed.

If they'd be a little more dynamic and read which way the wind was blowing a little better, they could of perhaps maintained their position in the upper echelon.

£549 eh? That's not bad considering the price of the high end segment this year (£649.99 for a G6, what were they thinking!)

          Cheers

I believe the UK price is GBP 549.00 according to Btekt over on YouTube. Cheers!

I'll... moreYeah I'm not sure where the 'embarrassment' would come from either....maybe the fact that users of this device will likely be running and more up-to-date and secure version of android than all but Pixel users perhaps?????

Never was a Nokia admirer back in the day. They were creative enough to be sure, but silly decisions and stubbornness lead to an all too predictable downfall. That said it's nice to see them back in the game in what ever form they are now.

Considering picking this device up myself, just waiting on UK pricing...........

lol! Beside the usual smartphone fanboys antics and their childish bickering for a piece of metal slabs which I find highly amusing. The nokia 8 is a decent phone, Although I kinda wish it had a better low-light camera sensor. I wonder what the next rumored nokia 9 would be. Hope nokia seriously gives samsung,lg and even apple a run for it's money.
