Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 review

23 October 2017
Full-view, full screen, bezel-less, tri-bezel-less, FullView, FullVision, Infinity Display - whatever you and your favourite manufacturer decides to call it, the new trend is clear - bezels are so 2016! In the build-up to the flexible display revolution and potentially a long-overdue renaissance of mobile phone design, impressive display aspects and proportions seem to be the most exciting alternative to the boring "slab" form factor.

Xiaomi Mi Mix has a 4400 mAh battery.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 has a 3400 mAh batery.

Xiaomi Mi Mix has a battery life of 97 hours.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 has a battery life of 65 hours.

Let that sink in for the a moment.

It surprises me that the battery life is much worse than other Xiaomi devices.

One of the most impressive phones of all time (the original Mi Mix) gets one of the most underwhelming successors (the Mi Mix 2).

Screen to body-ratio has actually GONE DOWN and not just slightly....It's down by a few percentage points. Clearly, the original Mi Mix looks stunning (even today, nearly one year from it's release), leaving the Mix 2 in the shade. Just look at them side-by-side.
                https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_mix_2-review-1674.php

And does Xiaomi, think we are dumb? That much touted 12% reduction in the bottom bezel area is because the width of the screen has significantly decreased. More crucially, the height of the lower bezel hasn't changed all that much.

NO 3.5 MM HEADPHONE JACK!!! BAD!

Still no SD-card slot. Is Xiaomi trying to be the next Apple?

No IP rating or water-resistance added. No IR Blaster, FM Radio.

No heavily-rumoured AMOLED screen and no resolution upgrade (although 1080p is still pretty good).Screen size is decreased from 6.4"to 5.99" and since the aspect ratio has gone from 17:9 to 18:9, it means an even less of screen area. And not just that, even contrast & brightness has gone down compared to the original Mix. Sad!

A WHOPPING 1000 MAH DOWNGRADE ON THE BATTERY! And that leads to an ATROCIOUS 65 hour endurance down from the awesome 97 hours of the Mi Mix with 4400 mAh! What an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE!

MIUI packs a lot of features and that is good, although MIUI is still a bit more on the Chinese UI end. Should take a page out of Lenovo's book and go towards a more stock, integrated look. Well, atleast the MIUI icons don't look as dated as Huawei's EMUI.....

Performace is probably the only main leap over the original Mi Mix, but even that jump isn't very massive.

Rich Multimedia package. Also great audio prowess.

The main camera gets a deserved upgrade, although the decision to leave it's aperture at f2.0 instead of f1.8 is confusing. No second camera won't impress the specs-seekers either. The improved quality of the Sony sensor is evident compared to the Omnivision sensor of it's predecessor. Low-light images are poor for 2017 flagship standards.

No huge selfie camera upgrade. Still at 5MP, with only a slight improvement to f2.0. Also I was hoping with the placement of a traditional earpiece, they could also place the camera up top and reduce the smaller bezel instead (a la S8, V30, Note8).

Also, what's with the comment "Considering the Mi Mix 2's Full screen display and 12% smaller chin underneath it, compared to its predecessor, having any selfie camera at all is an achievement in itself." The Note8 and S8 have one of the smallest bezels ever, packed with other sensors and yet it's selfie camera is one of the best packages ever (8 MP resolution, f1.7, wide FoV, 1.22 um pixels, 1/3.6" sensor and autofocus).

I was hoping Xiaomi would address the minor niggles of the Mi Mix and turn in an all-perfect successor. Instead they have ruined it and delivered a wimpy Mi Mix 2.

What a downgrade. The Mix Mix was unique with it's design. Now this deceiving phone looks like another Lg G6 rip off.The high price is another story too.Great job on the huge downgrades Xiaomi.First Mi note 2 now Mi Mix 2.

AnonD-126753, 24 Oct 2017Video review says MIUI 8 on top of Android 7 Nougat... but ... moreJust to further clarify the ROM situation. Currently, miui.com only features one Official Global ROM for the Mi Mix 2 - Version: V8.5.1.0.NDEMIEF (MIUI8) .

                    http://en.miui.com/download-334.html#491

It is indeed based on Android Nougat and is what we used for our review. The review unit we first received actually ran on the Chinese Developer ROM from the same official source - Version: 7.10.19 (MIUI9). This one is also based on Nougat, but does have a few extra MIUI 9 features, like split screen.

However, that being said, it is not final and also pretty chuck full of Chinese pre-loaded software. Also lacking Google Play Services. That is why we elected to use the Official, stable, even if older ROM and noted this in the written review. Now, technically, you are a 72 hour waiting period away from unlocking the bootloader of the Mix 2 and flashing any of these ROMs if you get the phone.

If you are not really keen on unlocking or flashing, but would still much rather have a MIUI ROM with Google Play Services, some retailers are already offering the Mix 2 with the Official Global ROM we used. Some, however, are less transparent and are actually marketing their units as Global, but then send you instructions on how to wait 72 hours and flash the Global ROM yourself.

Projects like XIAOMI.EU MIUI are another thing altogether. These are actually custom ROMs, typically based on the Chinese Official branch of MIUI, with some bloat stripped away and Google Play Services installed. Some retailers have these units in store. And while not necessarily a bad decision, going this route, means you are not getting an official ROM out of the box and have to rely on XIAOMI.EU or a similar developer for support and updates to the custom ROM.

                    https://sourceforge.net/projects/xiaomi-eu-multilang-miui-roms/files/xiaomi.eu/MIUI-WEEKLY-RELEASES/7.10.19/

To sum up, our best advice for picking up a Mi Mix 2 currently is to read the listings carefully if you are not prepared to potentially wait a few days, unlock and flash yourself. If you are comfortable with the process, Xiaomi is flexible enough to allow its users all the tools necessary to flash and switch branches and official or custom ROMs at will.

36k INR for a Xiaomi phone? Never. They are not worth anything above 20K INR. Xiaomi wants many to pay that much amount for just design but nothing else. Average camera and dim display doesn't warrant that much price. You want SD835....OP5 is cheaper and better than this.

Most Chinese phones are very bad at optimized battery. That the reasons why they put 4000 mah or even 5000 mah battery to their phones but their rating are the same as phones with 3000-3500 mah battery. Their skins & bloatwares drain battery like a v12.

There goes Xiaomi and their deceptive press photos which look nothing like the actual product. Shame. I was excited as hell initially but the fact it didn't look anywhere close to the Starck concept video and also worse than the original mix, it was a hard pass for me.
