Apple iPhone X review

08 November 2017
The anniversary iPhone is here. The iPhone X. Or the iPhone 10. The name is as confusing as the product itself is game-changing. Tim Cook's vision finally overwhelmed Steve Jobs ideological remnants. A new dawn for the iPhones has begun, free of the iconic Home key and the notorious screen bezels.

Iskander, 23 Nov 2017What I am trying to say? That the phone with the smaller... moreI don't like it (the notch) aesthetically, few do. I like it functionally, it takes up a part of the screen that only rarely is used (ultra wide movies). No the screen is not functionally smaller as a result, given that the notch takes a part of the screen that is not used 95% of the times.

The OLED actually isn't more power hungry than most/all oleds out there. The phone merely happens to have less battery-capacity (in Mah) than the rest. The total battery life of the device is better actually than most, that is because of IOS's and A11's battery profiles. The idea that the screen is the sole contributor to a battery life is weird at best.

The only battery tests that are of any use to laymen (non technical people who don't care the individual efficiency of each component) are those that stresses the whole phone (screen, SoC, storage, camera, speakers) ... I don't know anyone using individual components.

That the phone with the smaller screen area in cm2 and the bigger battery, still has the worse battery life when the only thing that is really draining power is the screen. That, even though it is an Oled screen.
Whether you like the notch or not, is a personal thing and has nothing to do with raw figures.

        Taking into consideration

        Crap battery life
        Low ram
        No 3,5mm audio jack
        Expensive accessories
        No fast charger
        Ridiculous price
        Ugly notch
        No fingerprint id
        Launch issues

I would give this a 3,5 (cpu and camera and no lag (yet))

Iskander, 22 Nov 2017With any normal smartphone I use, the notification bar gets... moreFunny that you used videos and games as your examples, the very apps which though using 16:9 don't touch the notch. And in case that they do support ultra wide (as they increasingly would) guess which screen shows the most content (notch or no notch), it certainly isn't the short (by comparison) 16:9 screen.

Here's a comparison between a 5.6 inch 18.5:9 screen and a 5.5 inch 16:9 screen. Guess which wins on ultra wide content (more than 2:1): https://i.imgur.com/hCc23L8.png

I don't get what you're trying to say. On portrait the having a notch/horns is better as what would formerly be a bezel is now used for the notification area.

On landscape it is either equal (it does not show up) or better (on ultra wide content)... and as more and more content supports the new aspect ratio, there will be fewer and fewer uses for the rapidly aging 16:9 (it's 6-7 years old already, at least as far as phones go).

Only issue with the notch/horns is purely aesthetical. From a functional point of view makes *perfect* sense. The notification area was mostly dead space anyway, better put some sensors there as well...

AnonD-711468, 22 Nov 2017That place was only used for showing the time which is now ... moreWith any normal smartphone I use, the notification bar gets hidden with any proper full screen app like video players and games, where it would be nice to have the full screen. So, the fact that the notification bar is in the screen, makes no difference, as it 'disappears' when needed.

Further, that 'true' 5.8" screen still has that cut out. where part of a truly full 5.8" screen shows display space. Also, a true 5.8" screen with which ratio? The elongated display has a much smaller surface area than a true 16:9 5.8"display. So actual surface space, as I was talking about, is (taking the cutout and the rounded corners in mind) quite a bit smaller than the 16:9 5.5" screen we know from many phones, including the iphone 8+.

The 'it's only lost with video watching' is the whole thing we are talking about here. Non existent screen does not have to show image and as such does not use power. A screen with a bigger surface area will have power more display and as such uses (relatively) more power. A 5" (as per many sources the actual diameter of the iPhone X for 16:9 content) display technically should last longer with similar battery than a 5.5" display, roughly 20% longer at that.

Iskander, 18 Nov 2017The iPhone X screen is almost the same size as the screen o... moreThat place was only used for showing the time which is now conveniently shown in one of the horns. That's not lost space, it *would* be if it was not for the horns (that people so much hate).

The screen is as big as a true 5.8 incher, it's not as if there is any phone without a notification bar, so that part of the screen is used anyhow.

It's only lost on landscape when watching ultra wide movies, but in those you already have a bigger screen as per sillisoft's "screen calculator"...

So everyone is going to ignore the fact that apple will charge you $548 for a back glass panel replacement. And I think the infinity display is more beautiful than this.

I'm returning the iPhone X after one day.

Face ID and screen flicker both induce an instant headache. I'm surprised more people aren't noticing this. Text appears blurry and doesn't scroll smoothly. Slippery and top heavy too.

Too bad because everything else is awesome. It's a nice size, watching video on that OLED, nice stereo speakers, cameras.

Anonymous, 19 Nov 2017Your right I'm wrong, I miss understood what you were tryin... moreMate, Pixel 2 XL is no contest, what google is doing is secondary to the disaster Pxel 2 XL already is, i suppose credit where its due, ip x is not at least that bad(in terms of QC), those who wasted 850$ for worse than beta product, got looted whether they think that way or not. And i am not here to support a particular brand or to criticize a particular brand, it's the blatant disregard for common consumer's interest by these giants is what bothers me. These giants represent 2 biggest mobile operating systems that are currently in the world out today, so what they do is gonna impact everybody whether one likes it or not. Hence the criticism.

People criticized non removable batteries or glass back design which also are inconveniences but in both cases we got something in return, i.e. Waterproofing and Wireless charging. What people got in return for removal of headphone jack or lack of
SD slot?? Those who wanna use wireless headphones ( and spend lot of money for less than or comparable audio quality) could have used their wireless headphones, jack or no jack. Those for whom base model onboard storage would be fine, would not have any problems for having an SD slot. Their removal however creates more monetizing options for companies, this comes at a cost of features which had no need to be removed.

Yet these manufacturers remove them and Sell higher onboard storage models of same device (SD slots)and their own wireless headphones the same year as that of removal of headphone jack, Apple also have acquired beats. All this at expense of consumer interest by trying to pull wool over the common people's eyes who do not see 'between the lines' stuff. Nobody asked them ( i mean top youtubers or reviewers, i see Nilay Patel from Verge complaining about them but there aren't many others) why people won't be able to use wireless headphones if there was a jack? How Samsung LG provide better S to B ratio and better waterproofing standard with the headphone jack? S to B ratio and Waterproofing were 2 major points held against that headphone jack. These questions were not asked and explanations at the time of launch from both manufacturers are dubious at best....
Headphone jack is totally different debate than the argument we had so i won't indulge into that debate.

As for devices i am using, I have LG G5 which fortunately has both headphone jack and SD slot(second sim tray). We all have to use phones but it's not essential to be the fan of particular brand, , i have had nokia and moto in the past. I am no fan of either of those, I would trust nokia the most but still not a fan as in if they were still around(the old nokia, not HMD) and made same mistakes, i would criticize them too. This is my opinion, if more people stayed loyal to their own money (i.e. demanding best value) than loyal to a particular brand, we wouldn't have brands taking consumers for granted and indulge into these anti consumer tactics for pleasing their shareholders.

And knowing all its flaws, shortcomings if somebody still wants to buy iphone X(for some features which might be important to them), i won't criticize them, but there are very few of these kind of buyers, most still buy it because of fanboyism and showing off they spent 1000$ on a phone. I may be wrong but this is what i observed people around me and from my country do. That logo on the back is important to them, but not because of practical reasons such as hassleless post sale service ( in my country it's not even remotely good), but because as status symbol. Again these are my observations so don't quote me on this.

                      Cheers!!

AnonD-80334, 19 Nov 2017I have given all the objectivity in world in the whole chai... moreYour right I'm wrong, I miss understood what you were trying to say and I've said that.. sure I can only 'assume' regarding the ip7 most people would opt for a Sd card to save $200 minus the approx cost of a Sd card. .or at least I would anyways. I also assumed that because for me, locally and online Sd cards are expensive, here I would pay for a good brand approx 140au Base for a 128 rrp, online you can half that.. But that still does not make it invalid, nor does only listing Europe and America valid.. I may have been short sighted but bias?
Also how does a hypothetical scenario even if correct hold more validity than as I put to you total devices v Sd card sales despite its fairy obvious result?
Anyways right of wrong, where we not talking about the iphone-x?
I don't see you in the pixel 2 xl thread leaving trails of countless comments despite its close price tag or its lack of Sd card slot or its obvious flaws?.
These threads are made to help people decide based on or at least should be based on critics from people who have had at least had hands on experience with the phone shouldn't they? And not trying to rob people of enjoying the phone theyve just gone out and purchased..
But hey your leaving and yes on some levels yes I do agree with you but despite that I am still going to purchase the Iphone-x.. Despite its notch, and lack of expandable on board memory.
Which makes me ask the question, what phone do you currently have? As I can only assume for your point for being here or and other phone threads you either want to show how on a rational and critical level the phone you own is the best choice for everybody or that people are not capable of making their own decisions...
That is either short sighted or bias
But why does that bother you so much what people buy and I can only assume it does with comments like enjoy your notch/and fanboy or the likes? What keeps bringing you back time and time again?
                        ...

Peace buddy see you on the flip side..

When you are not fuming over me thinking i am some sort of apple hater, try going through that train of thought in which you literally said people would pay more for on-board storage even if there's option to save money if it ever had SD slot.... hence apple's dirty monetizing tactics (by locking customers out of upgrade)... hence the whole point... Peace!!

Iskander, 18 Nov 2017It seems you need two steps to get your finger on the scann... moreIt only takes "two moves" (actually one , the swapping up of the lock screen) because Apple elected it to be so. The more it becomes a standard the more we'd see better implementations (instant unlock).

You cannot not see that passive biometrics is a muuuch more capable technology. In anything you do you're spared of an extra move (placing your finger anywhere). Even if you have timed it perfectly and you can now place your finger to the right place when removing your phone from your pocket, it's still an issue when the phone is on a table (especially if the scanner is on the back of the phone) or generally in any other place.

Passive biometrics basically means that all you have to do is look at your phone which you'd do anyhow when needing to use it... in practice it needs *no* moves , it's the exact same move you do if you had no security ... it's genius actually.

At least fact check before saying 100$, And that point has now gone back in circles enough times that it's not even funny anymore for me to rub it in your face how you have no basis what so ever to argue in a discussion regarding lack of SD cards, so keep living in an imaginary a world where people wanna pay more for same device when given SD card option to expand storage....

Also i don't need any other proof of what device you use, you are laboring a point which you have no rational thing to contribute to and proving your bias even further.....

And copy/paste? I already said, GSMA has said in very brief manner what i feel in general about this device, so if i use same sentence that's not valid ?? i say it again, people who buy iPhone X are beta testers for Apple and what's more hilarious is they are paying Apple at least 1000$(before tax) for that.

So relax and enjoy iPhone Ex, no need to argue the point you lost and humiliate yourself further.... Here's something more your speed, Apple's best, iPhone X is best, and haters gonna hate hate hate.... :P :P this would resonate more with you, though it would cheer you up.... :P enjoy being a 'Notch' ahead than other flagship phones.... :) Signing off....

But that is before you have to remove parts of the surface area that are not present, like the notch and the rounded corners. It takes a decent bite out of the total surface area.
And, as you also mentioned yourself, you only have a ~5" diagonal for the 16:9 ratio, which is important for watching movies/series.

                                  Something else:

                                  https://www.cnet.com/news/iphone-x-vs-iphone-8-plus-vs-iphone-8-how-to-choose/

They noticed a clear lead in battery life for the iPhone 8+ over the iPhone X in actual daily use. Now, since they still have the same innards, your initial claim of the iPhone X having the best screen on time of any iPhone, seems again defeated.

One could claim that they did not an actual test, but it was always about actual usage of the phone that was claimed to be important, not some benchmark.

As for the time , it's exactly the same. You put you hand in your pocket, then you place your finger and *then* you take it out.
