Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact review

17 March 2018
It's once again peak smartphone season and Sony is next to join the annual spring race. But while others do regular and plus-size models, Sony, as usual, is going towards the other end of the spectrum with the new Xperia XZ2 Compact.

BGChicago, 17 Mar 2018Project trebble on this phone confirmed?the XZ1 has it so I'd image the answer is "yep." Sony's very good with updates regardless.

They currently have a pre-order deal which includes the wh-1000xm2 headset... That's one way to deal with the removal of the headphone jack.

    I pre-ordered one yesterday.

Much more convinced after reading this review about this phone, especially the camera software improvements.
Still, I think I'll hold out for next years compact, second iteration of this design could be a big improvement if they improve battery stacking into the curved shape and find a way to slim down the camera assembly in the newer lens.

For the price and compactness, this phone is a winner. I've always love Sony's UI...even now i'm a huawei user. Great camera improvement, hurm I thought it'll be better if they stick to 720p res screen, easily can get 100+ hour battery endurance, its a compact phone anyway. Still not liking these new Ambient Flow design....looks weird and unergonomic.

finally improved camera from previous generation and reduced bezels. now it's 5" with 135mm height which is still good for me (my limit is 140mm high). i only miss fm radio, but no compact phones around with radio..

and no notch, thanks God! ok is a bit thick in the center, and fps was better on the side, no jack etc etc, but much better this one than all those awful new phones with tremendous notch, lol

look "latest devices" in gsma website.. all new announced phones will be 6" phones with notch.. are you kidding? all copying apple even when they do something awful.. looool! so sad... let me get this one, maybe the last of the compact phones :p

and I'm in Italy, so I'm getting also the nice headphones.. if i can sell them for about 200€, I'll get a new flagship for around 400€ in the end.. not bad!

The rear, in green, seems so Art Noveau (modernism) , as something out of a 60's movie, or a robot of the "Robots" movie or something out of the Fallout games

It's taller so you cannot reach the corners anymore. I'll go with S8/S9 instead.

To me, my to go limit is less or equal to 72mm wide, less than 150mm tall

With XZ2/XZ2C Sony once again confirmed that it makes the best Android smartphones. Bravo Sony.

raiden78, 17 Mar 2018Shitty design, poor batery life(compare to XZ1), thick as a... moreI am an XZ1 user myself, but even I can see why the battery life fell to 88 hour endurance. It's pushing a display with almost 2.5x more pixels (1080x2160 vs 720x1280). I knew once they finally made the upgrade to 1080p, endurance would take a hit, but that was a tradeoff I was willing to accept for an upgrade to higher pixel density. Considering the battery capacity of the handheld, they did pretty well. There aren't really any other sub-3000mAh battery phones you can name that pack an 88h endurance.

apertotes, 17 Mar 2018I understand there is a trend towards bigger screens, but 5... moreKeep in mind it is only 5" because the screen grew taller, not wider. So the phone can still be handled just as easily as the previous 4.6" XZ1 compact.

It's a shame that Sony decided to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack. It would be a great overall device.
