Lumia 1020 vs. Huawei P20 Pro

10 April 2018
While most makers are coming up with all sorts of different dual camera setups, Huawei figured that's no longer enough and fitted three on the back of the P20 Pro. But 3 is not the number that's captivated us most; rather, it's 40 - the P20 Pro comes with a 40MP primary camera.

The important part is that the lumia is still worth comparing after all these years but the new super expensive 1000 euro flagships will be forgotten in 3 years.

Good job guys! That's quite entertaining. It was easy for me though as I know what to look for.

The noisier, less contrast image is the Lumia but it shows its superiority despite its age. The Huawei shows the tendency of most camera smartphones today to have more processing e.g. aggressive noise reduction, sharpening, contrast, and saturation.

The Lumia is still superior due its slightly large sensor (1/1.5") and being a true 40MP sensor. The one in the Huawei is slightly smaller at 1/1.7". It is also known that the Huawei sensor only uses 10 million color filters which reduces the effectiveness of the 40 million pixels.

Many people hopes Nokia/HMD could bring back this beast with updated chipset, camera software, and hardware. Keep the 41mp, make it as large as 808 (1/1.2) and bigger pixel (1.5 in 808 vs 1.2 in 1020), variable app (seriously Nokia, you had this on N86), keep the ND filter from 808. You can keep the bracketing seting but of course people loves auto, so working on some HDR will be appreciated. And yes, keep the xenon.
I dunno if dual camera will help, but people loves it. So a secondary camera for, ya, maybe helping a lil bit, could make it better.

There's a reason I bought the Nokia 1020 years ago JUST for the camera. But i will never get the P20 Pro (as a Pixel owner). Because i can't stand oversharpened and oilpainting pictures

And more details (Lumia 1020 - A) vs few details (Huawei P20 Pro - B)

Anyway, bravo Huawei for such a good camera and maybe this will impose a new trend in the field of cameras
Maybe next year, Fingers crossed , Nokia it will bring a new cameraphone with a great and very good sensor

Phone A is Nokia Lumia 1020; Phone B, Huawei Mate P20 Pro. It's natural vs oversharpening.

optional, 10 Apr 2018Phone A has more pleasing images and retains more details. ... moreWelcome to real world: Smartphone consumers tend to like slightly overprocessed photos rather than true-to-life. It's more pleasing to the eye, and more social-media ready.
Seasoned photographers will opt for unprocessed photos and will take their time to readjust those photos to their style.

Why compare a 5 year into a new born?
Larger sensor will make sense, not the aperture.
We cannot compare 40mp mid size sensor vs 30mp large sensor.
Amazing that still 1020 single cam kicks the butt of triple cam.

I mean, by today standard, it just sounds impossible.
But Nokia was able to do that 6 years ago (808 in 2012), and they had been developing that in such a loooong time. So they had been thinking of this idea in 2008 maybe?

A 5yrs old phone with 5yrs old hardware (2gb ram, 1.5 ghz dual core) still beats todays smartphones. Lumia 1020 was Nokia's best shot. I doubt any company will dare to make such a masterpiece.

Phone A is the Lumia 1020 and is the clear winner here. Like everyone said here, you could easily get P20's pictures with Lumia after you add sharpness and contrast, but it's impossible to do get Lumia pics with the P20. Lumia also has it's problems: softness at some edges, but overall looks great.
I wish you could compare also the OnePlus 3/3T running Oreo with some of the newer flagships as it seems to click better pics than phone like Mate 10, Note 8, 5T. I know, it sounds crazy!

The phone B shows colours that just aren't there in every shot, and that is unnaceptable. In the first two shots there is less detail in B also, with both cameras struggling with the grass movement.

Prometheous, 10 Apr 2018In 4 out of 5 pictures, A is clear winner. But public opini... moreVery true. Huawei has some big flaws: purple fringing, small dynamic range, too much contrast and sharpness. Lumia shows its age also, but overall I think it wins this comparison hands down.

Probably you have a sharpness setting in the options, so you can get sharper images with Lumia. At least Nokia 808 and older Nokias have this option. I'm not sure about 1020, because there isn't any review on the internet that would present all the camera options of 1020.
