Huawei P20 Pro review

12 April 2018
Huawei was among the front-runners in the dual-camera race with the P9 and then the Mate 10, so who better to take things to the next level? The Huawei P20 Pro one-ups all current major players and comes with three cameras on its back, each unique in its own right.

[deleted post]Nokia didn't mention 5MP mode in their presentation when they announced Lumia 1020. Your point?

Wow! Look at those bright sharpening halos. They have failed miserably if they tried to emulate Nokia's 808 and 1020. Excessive noise reduction and sharpening means low quality.
I bet Leica regret being associated with Huawei. Even if I had all the money in the world I wouldn't buy a Leica camera after seeing what they achieve with Huawei.

Wow, no nighttime photos in normal mode? Really GSMArena?
I've already seen various samples on the internet where at night P20 Pro completely wrecks competitors without even using dedicated long exposure night mode (HDR in auto mode is extremely aggressive no matter what the lighting conditions are, so it excels rescuing highlights even in low light). I strongly wish GSMArena will upload samples taken without Master AI as well, I would like to see what kind of difference it makes in all the other situations.

Wow wow wow , all of you have s9 or iX? why so much hate?if chinese company does a better job than gsmarena is paid? Look, Huawei explained how camera works, 10mp comes preset out of the box...Night mode isnt great on moving objects as pixel 2 but its twice better in steady objects... And what about the price? According to gsmarena and dxo and some smaller pages P20 pro is a clear winner today in camera department. Dont worry ... Other companies will be equal with next models... Price is reasonable... it isnt in gaming category but runs everything + better camera than any other device avalible at the moment... And that color... something fresh... So price need to be high.

Ugh. I just realised. Hardware buttons.
I know it doesn't matter, but it matters.

[deleted post]The thing is, the phone defaults at 10mp fresh out of the box, so Huawei expects it to be untouched by the users when they use the camera.

It's just like their previous monochrome+RGB setup.
The camera defaults to 12mp for best results, and 20mp monochrome is just there to test the quality of one of the cameras.

Huawei defaults the resolution to 10mp as that resolution will make use of all three cameras simultaneously.
They won't put the three cameras there and have only one of them to do the job.

I agree the price is definitely too high, especially considering the CPU is not as fast as the SD835, much slower than the SD845.

                        Poor video quality..
4K h264 is just 24Mbps. It is too low.

                        S9 does 45Mbps and XZ2 has 54Mbps.

                          This phone is awful...

                          4000mAh + FHD+ screen + amoled but only 89h?

Mate 10 with QHD LCD has same 89h.

Nicolas F, 12 Apr 2018FHD at 400 ppi is [absolutely] enough for any smartphone. But why ppl make critics when Sony has 424ppi or Apple has 404?

But for chinese phones is always okay.

                              Check the photo tool.
Samples of p20 pro are not much better than a flagshop from 2016

Why the price doesn't stand in cons? I don't even know, which of the three P20's has worse pricing. Existence of expensive smartphones should be ashamed for companies, especially by the reviewers!

                                And why so many typos?

Seems that Huawei have attended the LG school of image (over) processing.

It's also inappropriate that gsmarena writes that Huawei's Night mode algorithm can not do much against ghosting as if that's normal. Google's HDR+ handles ghosting extremely well, so with HDR+ you never notice obvious ghosting despite the same technique as Huawei's night mode.
